  • Acute effects of qigong exercise on mood and anxiety

    • Psychosocial stress may lead to increased rates of anxiety and depression. Aerobic exercise and mind-body therapies are frequently described as having positive effects on psychological well-being by enhancing mood and reducing anxiety. Few studies, however, have investigated the acute psychological effects of qigong exercise. Fifty-nine regular qigong exercisers (mean age 50.8 years) were randomized to a Qigong or Control group. Pre- and postmeasurements were then compared. POMS-Depression, Anger, and Fatigue, and STAI-State Anxiety scores decreased significantly in the Qigong group but not in the Control group. Results thereby suggest that qigong exercise can produce desirable psychological effects, and Qigong exercise may therefore be included among other activities performed to boost resistance to daily stressors.

  • Work characteristics and sickness absence in burnout and nonburnout groups : a study of Swedish health care workers

    • The aim of this study was to search for constellations of work characteristics that discriminate people who experience burnout from those who do not, and also from those who score high in exhaustion but not in disengagement, and vice versa. The study is based on data from 3,719 employees in a County Council in Sweden. Discriminant analysis revealed that four burnout categories (nonburnout, disengaged, exhausted, and burnout) related in different ways to self-reported work characteristics. The proportions of respondents with overtime, sickness absence, and sickness presence were higher in the burnout and the exhausted groups compared with the nonburnout group. The most common professions in the burnout group were, unexpectedly, dental nurses, secretaries, and service staff.

  • Prominent consequences of role stress : a meta-analytic review

    • Role stress has received a lot of research attention in psychological, sociological, and organizational studies over the last several decades. Based on a literature review of about 300 journal articles, this article examines prominent consequences of role stress. Specific focus is on researching differences in relationships between facets of role stress (i.e., role ambiguity, role conflict, and role overload) and frequently cited consequences using techniques of meta-analysis. Findings indicate that each role stress facet has a different relationship with the eight consequences studied. Role stress research can benefit from looking at each facet individually in addition to role stress generally

    • This study analyzed the relationship between each of five decision-making styles, including Rational, Intuitive, Dependent, Avoidant, and Spontaneous (Scott & Bruce, 1995) and two indicators of stress, Perceived stress and Sleep quality, among administrative officers and investigators at three Swedish public authorities: The National Tax board, the Social Insurance agency, and the Police authority (n 472). Results showed that Avoidant style and, to some extent, the Dependent style were significantly associated with higher Perceived Stress and poorer Sleep. The results for the specific organizations showed that the Rational style was advantageous at the Tax board only.

  • Behavioral Stress Recovery Management Intervention for People With High Levels of Perceived Stress : A Randomized Controlled Trial

    • Continuous and prolonged exposure to stressors or unsuccessfully dealing with such exposure has been suggested as precursors for burnout. Current research indicates that such stress problems could be conceptualized as deficiencies in recovery between periods of stress. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a behaviorally oriented stress recovery management intervention for people experiencing high levels of stress. A total of 73 individuals with experiences of stress symptoms and high levels of perceived stress (>= 25 on the Perceived Stress Scale) were randomly allocated to either a 10-week intervention group or a waiting-list control group. Participants were assessed at preintervention, postintervention, and 3-month follow-up. The Perceived Stress Scale, questions about tension, and the Shirom-Melamed Burnout Questionnaire were used as primary outcome measures. and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale was used as a secondary outcome measure. Data were analyzed following the intention-to-treat principle. The analysis demonstrated statistically significant improvements for all measures at posttreatment and at follow-up. The between-groups effect sizes were high at posttreatment and moderate-to-high at follow-up. Intervention focused on stress recovery behavior seems to be an effective way of reducing perceived stress, tension, burnout symptoms, anxiety, and depression in people with stress symptoms and high levels of perceived stress in everyday life. The tested intervention warrants further research. Other stress recovery behavior interventions need to be tested to draw conclusions on the efficacy of stress recovery behavior interventions in general regarding stress and burnout.

    • Burnout is a common problem in many countries and is associated with psychological ill health, somatic diseases, mortality and long-term sick leave. Different versions of the Shirom-Melamed Burnout Questionnaire/Measure (SMBQ/SMBM) are widely used to measure burnout. Using confirmatory factor analysis, the main purpose of the present study was to empirically evaluate different Swedish versions of the SMBQ/SMBM. A questionnaire containing 23 SMBQ/SMBM-items was sent to 4,000 randomly selected individuals of which 765 with no missing data were included in the analyses. The well-used 4-factor SMBQ/SMBM-22 including the factors emotional and physiological exhaustion (EPE), cognitive weariness (CWE), listlessness (LIS), and tension (TES) and the 3-factor SMBQ/SMBM-18 (including the EPE, the CWE, and the LIS) reached good model fit after minor modifications. Two 2-factor models (based on 12 and 11 items, respectively), including the EPE and the CWE reached good model fit without any modifications. Even though there were some concerns regarding all models with respect to discriminant validity, the factors in all models showed evidence of good composite reliability (CR) and convergent validity. Lastly, a brief six-item version of the scale based on the 12-item version of the scale indicated an excellent model fit, and the composite score of the six-item scale correlated strongly with the composite scores from the others models, suggesting that the brief version could be used with advantage. In addition, based on the LIS, a new three-item scale that measures vitality is proposed. For all measures, normative data are reported.

  • Well-Being and Organizational Attitudes in Alternative Employment : The Role of Contract and Job Preferences

    • This study focuses upon the heterogeneity in the contemporary workforce in relation to well-being and organizational attitudes. This heterogeneity may concern (a) the specific type of contract (permanent full-time vs. alternative arrangements; e.g., permanent part-time, fixed-term, and on-call work), (b) job and contract preferences, or (c) specific combinations of contract type and preferences. The authors argue that working in alternative employment, but also being in a nonpreferred contract or job may imply stress and, hence, strain (i.e., poor well-being). This may lead to withdrawal from the organization (i.e., poor organizational attitudes). A combination of the stressors may strengthen these effects. Analyses of questionnaire data from Sweden collected in 2004 (N = 716) reveal that preferences, particularly preferences for the job and partly also for the contract, were associated with the outcomes. Contract heterogeneity was not informative for well-being, while it was for differences in reported organizational attitudes. Type of employment contract interacted with job and contract preferences: for permanent full-time workers, job preferences displayed stronger associations with well-being and attitudes than for workers in alternative employment.

  • Nature through virtual reality as a stress-reduction tool : a systematic review

    • The current systematic review aims to assess the acute stress-reduction effects of virtual reality (VR) natural environments. The study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement, while the inclusion criteria were established through population, intervention, comparison, outcome, and study design (PICOS). The studies were included if (a) based on a nonclinical population; (b) compared the exposure to virtual nature through 360° images, biophilic elements, VR prerecorded videos, or immersive environments, excluding augmented reality; (c) objective (physiological parameters) or subjective (e.g., self-report questionnaires) measures were reported; (d) the reported measures contained quantitative outcomes; and (e) the records were published between 2010 and 2023. Four hundred nine studies were initially retrieved, 19 of which were finally included for synthesis. The eligible studies comprised a total of 1,168 participants. The quality assessment of the studies revealed a score of 10.1/15, indicating that studies were of overall "moderate quality." Heterogeneity among the type of natural environment, type of stress induction, and type of comparator (nonnatural environment) was retrieved. Differences were also present regarding either the physiological or psychological variables analyzed. The exposure to natural environments through VR seemingly reduces objective and subjective stress levels. The presence of (a) natural sounds, (b) natural lighting, and (c) water elements seem to be key elements that help VR users reducing stress.
