  • Researching Intimacies and New Media : Methodological Opportunities and Challenges
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Inquiry. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8004 .- 1552-7565. ; 25:3, s. 231-236
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Researching intimacies and new media encompasses a wide variety of intersecting practices and relationships. This special issue presents contributions from researchers who are investigating practices of intimacy mediated either wholly or in part through new media in which a variety of different methodological opportunities and challenges are highlighted and discussed. Existing research has addressed different combinations of new media, intimacy, and methodology, but there remains space for a dedicated focus on the ways in which these areas are interrelated and entangled. The articles in this special issue build up a conversation around this particular intersection from a range of directions, from reflections on specific technological devices/apps and their promotion of particular forms of intimacies that may lead to (dis)comfort and (dis)connection, to the intimate—and sometimes risky—investments in research processes and fieldwork, as well as the ethical frameworks and decision-making processes guiding the research.

  • A problem of validity in education research
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Inquiry. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-8004 .- 1552-7565. ; 9:6, s. 859-874
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • All forms of capitalism involve economic accumulation for one small group of individuals at the expense of others in processes that are therefore completely antithetical to equity and solidarity. For a sense of fairness to be maintained under these circumstances, strange things must happen to what are termed as common life values. They must begin to operate instrumentally according to principles of the market, where monetary forms of value predominate and the cultural and economic character of everyday life is disguised. This knowledge is rarely included in interpretations of education processes and outcomes in education research within capitalist societies. The argument of the present article is in the interests of education research validity as it should be.

  • Critical Ethnographies of Education and for Social and Educational Transformation: A Meta-Ethnography
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Inquiry. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-8004 .- 1552-7565. ; 27:6, s. 677-688
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a 2016 special issue on the relationships between ethnography of education and social, economic, and material precarity, Geoff Bright and John Smyth were critical of ethnographic researchers, for concentrating on discourses and discourse production only, rather than on material conditions to develop activism and processes of transformation against oppression. Instead of only identifying and critiquing precarity, and deconstructing taken-for-granted ideas to give voice to ingrained forms of oppression and marginalization, critical ethnography they wrote, should really be about changing, not only describing and analyzing, oppressive conditions. In the present article, we attempt to identify and explore cases where researchers have overcome the reluctance toward activism and transformation. Using empirical examples we will try to illustrate what characterized these efforts and what seemed to support their success.

  • Digital Technography : a Methodology for Interrogating Emerging Digital Technologies and Their Futures
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Inquiry. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8004 .- 1552-7565. ; 28:7, s. 827-836
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article introduces “digital technography” as a methodology to interrogate and voice emerging digital technologies and their anticipated futures. I demonstrate, with reference to recent research on wearable self-tracking devices, digital food technologies, and platforms for work automation, how one can gain an understanding of these technologies by attending to the materials in which they are promoted; and actively engaging with them imaginatively and self-reflexively as a social scientist. This article outlines a digital technographic methodology centered around the three conceptual anchors of specification, valorization, and anticipation, all of which pertain to how a digital technology aims and perhaps even aspires to become a part of everyday life.

  • Nothing, Anything, and Everything : Conversations on Postqualitative Methodology
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Inquiry. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-8004 .- 1552-7565. ; 27:2, s. 192-197
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we elaborate on postqualitative methodology by engaging with two questions: What does postqualitative mean? Why is the postqualitative movement important? The engagement with these questions evokes a conversation, which becomes our methodology. The conversation is an assemblage, always multiple and collective. This allows us to acknowledge the messy and hybrid processes of knowledge production, and it forces us to be responsive to moments and movements, while remaining vague and ambivalent. As such, the postqualitative provides us with nothing. Simultaneously, it offers tools to navigate and can turn into anything. Nonetheless, it implies hope and is therefore everything.

  • Visuality Without Form: Video-Mediated Communication and Research Practice Across Disciplinary Contexts
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Inquiry. - : Sage Publications. - 1077-8004 .- 1552-7565. ; 25:4, s. 417-431
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Visuality is a concept that crosses boundaries of practice and meaning, making it an ideal subject for interdisciplinary research. In this article, we discuss visuality using a fragment from a video meeting of television producers at Swedish Television’s group for programming in Swedish Sign Language. This example argues for the importance of recognizing the diversity of analytical and practice-derived visualities and their effect on the ways in which we interpret cultures. These different visualities have consequences for the methods and means with which we present scholarly research. The role of methods, methodology, and analysis of visual practices in an organizational and bilingual setting are key. We explore the challenges of incorporating deaf visualities, hearing visualities, and different paradigms of interdisciplinary research as necessary when visibility, invisibility, and their materialities are of concern. We conclude that in certain contexts, breaking with disciplinary traditions makes visible that which is otherwise invisible.

  • Balancing at the Beginning of Words-Revisiting the Idea of Open Awareness in Qualitative Research
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Inquiry. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-8004 .- 1552-7565. ; 28:10, s. 1019-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, my aim is to explain the phenomenological approach of openness in research. The understanding of open questioning is concerned with Merleau-Ponty's analysis of the intimacy of siding with the world, and this relationship puts distinctive demands on researchers to be aware of the phenomena in the study. I also use the Feldenkrais approach that offers a body awareness practice that examines the border between humans and the world. The article shows how the phenomenological approach, together with the Feldenkrais practice, can guide researchers on the important road between nonverbal, lived experience and scientific, verbal activities.

  • Open and Reflective Lifeworld Research: A Third Way
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Inquiry. - : SAGE Publications. - 1077-8004 .- 1552-7565. ; 26:5, s. 458-464
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the mission in mind to articulate an approach that is scientifically competent to meet the appeals from health care, education, social work, and other disciplines, the theme of this article is to rethink the essential ideas of phenomenological and hermeneutical research approaches, by exploring their philosophical underpinnings and especially the essential ontological idea of inseparability. We examine the fissure between approaches that favor description or interpretation and explore the arguments for a third approach that has the power to close the false epistemological methodological gap.

  • The Crealectic Method : From Creativity to Compossibility
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Inquiry. - : SAGE Publications. - 1552-7565 .- 1077-8004.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Can we fruitfully apply creative ecology practices in the world of industrial production? Enter the crealectic method for innovation and self-innovation, aiming at fostering creative long-term thinking and acting. The crealectic method proposes five steps: Step 1—Resetting (doing tabula rasa); Step 2—Crealing (reconnecting with the “Creal”); Step 3—Profusing (letting ideas pour out without censorship); Step 4—Compossibilizing (connecting compatible ideas); Step 5—Realizing (understanding and making real). I describe a pilot test of the method within the Research and Development unit of Vattenfall, a Swedish power company dedicated to fossil-free energy production.
