  • Stakeholders’ Perception of Success: an Empirical Investigation
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: SEAA '09. 35th Euromicro Conference on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications, 2009.. - Patras, Greece : Euromicro. - 1089-6503. - 9780769537849 ; , s. 210-216
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Different stakeholders involved in the software development may attribute success to different indicators. Analogously they may support different factors considered the root of successful projects. The study presented in this paper explores how different stakeholders perceive project success and what they deem the effect of specific factors on the project outcome. The study highlighted both commonalities and differences among three main stakeholder classes. A substantial agreement was observed concerning the characteristics that make a project or product successful. As far as the factors that could lead to success are concerned, more bias emerged.

  • A systematic literature review and a unified model of ATD
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the EUROMICRO Conference. - 1089-6503. - 9781509028191 ; , s. 189-197
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fast software deliveries are hindered by high maintenance efforts due to internal quality issues and Technical Debt (TD) and specifically, Architectural Technical Debt (ATD) has received increased attention in the last few years. ATD has a significant influence and impact on system success and, left unchecked, it can cause expensive repercussions; it is, therefore, of maintenance and evolutionary importance to understand the basic underlying factors of ATD. Thus, with this as background, there is a need for a descriptive model to illustrate and explain the different ATD issues. The aim of this study is to synthesize and compile research efforts with the goal of creating new knowledge with a specific interest in the ATD field. The contribution of this paper is the presentation of a novel descriptive model, providing a comprehensive interpretation of the ATD phenomenon. This model categorizes the main characteristics of ATD and reveals their corresponding relations. The model is based on a systematic literature review (SLR) of currently recognized knowledge concerning ATD.

  • Automated Prioritization of Metrics-based Design Flaws in UML Class Diagrams
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 2014 40th Euromicro Conference Series on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications (Seaa 2014). - : IEEE. - 1089-6503. ; , s. 369-376
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The importance of software architecture in software development prolongs throughout the entire software life cycle. This is because quality of the architectural design defines the structural aspects of the system that are difficult to change, and hence will affect most of the subsequent development and maintenance activities. This paper considers software design flaws (related to the system structure) and not flaws identified at run time (by testing). These design flaws are akin to what is described in the literature as anti-patterns, bad smells or rotting design. Recently, two tools that have been developed for quality assurance of software designs represented in the UML notation: SDMetrics and MetricView. However these tools are not considered practical because they report many design flaws which are not considered by developers (false positives). This paper explores an approach that tries to identify which design flaws should be considered important and which are not. To this end, we propose an approach for automated prioritization of software design flaws (BX approach), to facilitate developers to focus on important design flaws more effectively. We designed and implemented a tool (PoSDef) that implements this approach. The BX approach and the PoSDef tool have been validated using two open source projects and one large industrial system. Our validation consists of comparing our approach and tool with the existing design flaw tools. The evaluation has shown that the proposed approach could facilitate developers to identify and prioritize important design flaws effectively.

  • Evolution of long-term industrial meta-models-an automotive case study of AUTOSAR
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 40th Euromicro Conference Series on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications, SEAA 2014. - 1089-6503. - 9781479957941 ; , s. 141-148
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Meta-models in software engineering are used to define properties of models. Therefore the evolution of the meta-models influences the evolution of the models and the software instantiated from them. The evolution of the meta-models is particularly problematic if the software has to instantiate two versions of the same meta-model- A situation common for long-term software development projects such as car development projects. In this paper, we present a case study of the evolution of the standardized meta-model used in the development of the automotive software systems-the AUTOSAR meta-model-at Volvo Car Corporation. The objective of this study is to assist automotive software designers in planning long term development projects based on multiple AUTOSAR meta-model versions. We achieve this by performing quantitative analysis of the AUTOSAR meta-model evolution in order to visualize the size and the complexity change between different meta-model versions and calculate the number of changes which need to be implemented to adopt a newer version. The analysis is done for each major role in the automotive development process affected by the changes.

  • Insight into risk management in five software organizations
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: SEAA '09. 35th Euromicro Conference on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications, 2009. - 9780769537849 ; , s. 321-326
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many software development and evolution projects use risk management process for tackling various uncertainties, unexpected events and unclear project prerequisites. Despite this, little is known about their effectiveness. In this paper, we report on the status of risk management practice within five organizations. The report encompasses issues such as (1) industrial understanding of risk, (2) project uncertainty, (3) risk management within projects, and (4) use of risk management process.

  • Safety-Critical Systems and Agile Development: A Mapping Study
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 44TH EUROMICRO CONFERENCE ON SOFTWARE ENGINEERING AND ADVANCED APPLICATIONS (SEAA 2018). - 1089-6503. - 9781538673836
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several studies report that the use of model-centric methods in the automotive domain is widespread and offers several benefits. However, existing work indicates that few modelling frameworks explicitly include requirements engineering (RE), and that natural language descriptions are still the status quo in RE. Therefore, we aim to increase the understanding of current and potential future use of models in RE, with respect to the automotive domain. In this paper, we report our findings from a multiple-case study with two automotive companies, collecting interview data from 14 practitioners. Our results show that models are used for a variety of different purposes during RE in the automotive domain, e.g., to improve communication and to handle complexity. However, these models are often used in an unsystematic fashion and restricted to few experts. A more widespread use of models is prevented by various challenges, most of which align with existing work on model use in a general sense. Furthermore, our results indicate that there are many potential benefits associated with future use of models during RE. Interestingly, existing research does not align well with several of the proposed use cases, e.g., restricting the use of models to informal notations for communication purposes. Based on our findings, we recommend a stronger focus on informal modelling and on using models for multi-disciplinary environments. Additionally, we see the need for future work in the area of model use, i.e., information extraction from models by non-expert modellers.

  • A Component-Based Technology for Hardware and Software Components
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 35th Euromicro Conference on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications (SEAA). - 9780769537849 ; , s. 450-453
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the challenges in development of embedded systems is to cope with hardware and software components simultaneously. Often is their integration cumbersome due to their incompatibilities, different specifications and different approaches in their development. In this paper we present a component-based technology for building distributed embedded systems consisting of both embedded hardware devices and software components. To obtain a uniform view on hardware and software we have developed a new component model – UComp. Our technology consists of UComp component model that allows treating remote devices as components, and a run-time framework that supports this component model when the system is deployed. To evaluate the principles we have developed a prototype tool that implements the technology and uses Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) standard for communication between system parts, and demonstrated a feasibility of the approach.

  • Effects of Feature Complexity on Software Effort Estimates - an Exploratory Study
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 40th Euromicro Conference on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications, August 27-29, 2014, Verona, Italy. - 1089-6503. - 9781479957958 ; , s. 301-304
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Software estimates are an important input to project selection, planning, monitoring as well assessment of projects’ success. However, the practice of estimation is also a challenging activity for many practitioners, and there is a continuing need to understand and improve it. To contribute to the existing knowledge of this process, an in-depth study was conducted where 18 practitioners from eight subdomains at a company producing embedded systems were interviewed. The contribution of this article is twofold: First, it reports the estimation challenges as perceived by the practitioners where the two most prominent were organizational dependencies and complexity of requested features. Second, since feature complexity was noted as one of the estimation challenges, this paper also reports on factors that are driving that complexity, two of the most common being dependencies on functionality developed by other parts of the organization, and functionality that affects the entire product.

  • Architecture Technical Debt: Understanding Causes and a Qualitative Model
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 40th Euromicro Conference on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications. - 1089-6503. - 9781479957958 ; , s. 85-92
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A known problem in large software companies is to balance the prioritization of short-term with long-term responsiveness. Specifically, architecture violations (Architecture Technical Debt) taken to deliver fast might hinder future feature development, which would hinder agility. We conducted a multiple-case embedded case study in 7 sites at 5 large companies in order to shed light on the current causes for the accumulation of Architectural Technical Debt that causes effort. We provide a taxonomy of the factors and their influence in the accumulation of debt, and we provide a qualitative model of how the debt is accumulated and recovered over time.
