  • From an information consumer to an information author : a new approach to business intelligence
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Organizational Computing and Electronic Commerce. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1091-9392 .- 1532-7744. ; 28:2, s. 157-171
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Self-Service Business Intelligence (SSBI) enables business users, such as executives, managers, analysts, and knowledge workers to build reports on a need-basis to support their decisions and actions toward business success. This suggests that business users are empowered not only to consume information but also to author it. Yet, research on SSBI is mainly concentrated at the industrial level, and furthermore little is known on the way SSBI is changing the current state of BI. To address this lack of knowledge, this study explores the attributes of SSBI that are necessary to extend the role of a business user beyond that of an information consumer by drawing on the literature of Self-Service Technologies (SST). This study provides a new definition of SSBI as a new approach to BI. Furthermore, it highlights the duality of high levels of co-production and low levels of dependency as key to the SSBI approach.

  • Virtual community use for packaged software maintenance
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Organizational Computing and Electronic Commerce. - 1091-9392 .- 1532-7744. ; 16:3-4, s. 345-365
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we investigated the use of virtual communities for involving distributed customers in the maintenance of packaged software. On the basis of an empirical study, we suggest that virtual communities can be usefully leveraged for corrective, adaptive, and perfective software maintenance. Specifically, the virtual community allowed for quick discovery of bugs and a rich interaction between developers and customers in the categories of corrective and adaptive software maintenance. However, although contributing also to the perfective category of software maintenance, this was the category in which several customer suggestions for modification were actually ignored by the developers. This implies that community use is indeed beneficial for maintenance related to coding and design errors as well as for maintenance of an adaptive character. However, it has limitations when associated with major changes such as software functionality addition or modification as those experienced in the category of perfective maintenance.

  • E-business adoption by SMEs : prerequisites and attitudes of SMEs in a Swedish network
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Organizational Computing and Electronic Commerce. - Basingstoke : Taylor & Francis. - 1091-9392 .- 1532-7744. ; 13:3-4, s. 211-223
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The context for this research is the transformation process of small and medium-sized enterprises from traditional businesses toward e-businesses and the accompanying development of the knowledge and competence among employees. SMEs constitute a great part of the Swedish industry and economy. This and the fact that they have special prerequisites concerning human and technology resources makes SMEs an interesting research focus when looking at the transformation process toward e-business. The aim of this research is to investigate SMEs with the purpose of designing, implementing, and evaluating information technology-supported activities that will allow SMEs to approach e-business. This article presents results from parts of an ongoing study, that involves seven SMEs. This study will be conducted in two main phases: first, informative and preparatory activities and second, business transformation and competence development activities. The underlying prerequisites for SMEs as well as the research approach are described. A working model is presented that illustrates stages of maturity for taking an enterprise toward e-business. The last sections present the research design, that is, planning, actions, observations, and reflections of the study up until now.

  • A framework for a dynamic organizational memory information system
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Journal of Organizational Computing and Electronic Commerce. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1091-9392 .- 1532-7744. ; 9:2-3, s. 189-203
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organizational memory information systems (OMIS) implement important aspects of organizational memory with the aim of enhancing organizational effectiveness. We propose a 3-layered framework for a dynamic OMIS. The framework consists of a pragmatic layer to support the actual activity, a conceptual layer to store the concepts inherent in that activity, and a process layer to store the experience of performing that activity. Both the conceptual and process layers represent organizational memory repositories in the form of respective models. The implementation of OMIS assumes that any activity is the instantiation of relevant conceptual and process models and includes the reuse of knowledge stored in association with those models. In this way, organizational memory is always mapped to current activity, and its adequacy is constantly evaluated. This provides the potential for the models to evolve as a direct result of the current activity. A partial implementation of this framework to support epidemiological research is illustrated.

  • Factors predicting attitude toward disclosing personal data online
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Organizational Computing and Electronic Commerce. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1091-9392 .- 1532-7744. ; 28:3, s. 214-233
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To test a theoretical model, this study explores the effect of anxiety, trust, personality, and perceived benefits on the disclosure of personal information online. An online survey conducted among participants in the United States (n = 248, age range: 20–82 years) examined attitudes toward disclosing personal data online. Specifically, the study researches the impact of anxiety disclosing personal data, trust (both in the Internet and in institutions), the Big Five personality traits, and four sets of perceived shopping benefits (opportunity, bargain, purchase, and expected privacy benefits) in e-commerce disclosure and their role as antecedents for adoption and use of e-commerce. The study aligns with existing trust literature and corroborates other findings on how perceived purchase benefits impact individuals’ attitudes toward disclosing personal data online. The data suggest that both trust in the Internet and trust in institutions positively influence attitude toward disclosing personal data online. Perceived purchase benefits were also significant positive predictors for attitude toward disclosing personal data online. Furthermore, personality dimensions can affect attitude toward disclosing: the more neurotic a person is, the more negative their attitude is about disclosing personal data online. The study underscores that consumers have a responsibility to educate themselves about online disclosure and marketing practices, and about how to protect their online privacy. Most importantly, fostering trust, reducing anxiety, and promoting benefits are essential to the future of e-commerce. Implications for theory, consumers, marketing practice, and public policy are also discussed.

  • Improving the speed and ease of open data use through metadata, interaction mechanisms, and quality indicators
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Organizational Computing and Electronic Commerce. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1091-9392 .- 1532-7744. ; 26:1-2, s. 116-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The usage of Open Government Data (OGD) has not kept pace with the expectations as existing OGD infrastructures mainly serve as data repositories. Many OGD infrastructures do not stimulate or support OGD use processes, and there is a lack of research regarding which functionalities can stimulate such processes. The objective of this study is to use a design science approach to evaluate whether metadata, interaction mechanisms and data quality indicators can improve OGD use. OGD use comprises five main activities, namely searching for and finding OGD, OGD analysis, visualizing OGD, interacting about OGD, and OGD quality analysis. We expect that three OGD key infrastructure elements—metadata, interaction mechanisms, and data quality indicators—allow for improving these five OGD use activities. A prototype of an advanced OGD infrastructure was created which implements the three OGD infrastructure elements. Three quasi-experiments with a pre-test post-test control group design were conducted. The quasi-experiments showed that the prototype facilitated the usability of the novel OGD use functionalities. Our quasi-experiments supported our propositions that metadata, interaction mechanisms, and data quality indicators contribute to making OGD use easier and faster, and enhance the user experience. The infrastructure elements improved OGD use by better enabling searching, analysing, visualizing, discussing, giving feedback on and assessing the quality of open data. Hence, we plea for integrating metadata, interaction mechanisms, and data quality indicators in open data infrastructures to advance open data usage.
