  • Place and youth political action : how place shapes political action in rural Sweden
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research. - : Sage Publications. - 1103-3088 .- 1741-3222. ; 32:2, s. 125-141
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are important gaps in the research on youth political action due to a lack of attention to the roles of place and the experiences of young people in rural places. To address these gaps, this article presents findings from intensive interviews with 15 young people (aged between 16 and 29 years) who identified as politically/socially engaged and lived or had recently lived in a rural place in Sweden. Analysis of their responses, based on constructivist-grounded theory, shows that place dimensions shaped three social processes of young people’s political action: engaging in politics in (rural) places, finding recognition as political actors in (rural) places and negotiating political belonging in relation to (urban) places. By linking these processes with Agnew’s three-dimensional understanding of place, the analysis provides novel insights into how various dimensions of place shape crucial social processes of youth political action.

  • EPA (aka A-Traktor) Girl Greasers in Sweden : Girlhood in Motion?
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1103-3088 .- 1741-3222. ; 31:1, s. 73-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on girlhood in one of the youth subcultures of rural Sweden, EPA greasers. The EPA, a car that Swedes aged 15 and older can legally drive, is at the centre of EPA culture. In this uniquely and previously male Swedish youth greaser culture, there has been a recent increase in the number of Swedish girls driving EPAs. Previous research has shown how EPA culture and EPA girlhood are shaped through distancing from hegemonic urban and middle-class norms and ideology. In this article, we seek to develop an understanding of EPA culture, specifically the ways in which it has been adopted by girls. Starting out from their online performances, we will explore how place, femininity and resistance intersect. The findings demonstrate how EPA girls use a playful way of troubling norms in their online performances, understood here as space and outlet to resist and mess around with dominant discourses and prejudice. This can also be understood as a way of talking back to masculinity, the majority society and urbanity.

  • Pathways to Aesthetic Education in a World of Profitability
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research. - : Sage Publications. - 1103-3088 .- 1741-3222. ; 30:5, s. 490-510
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The cultural sector has become an important part of the ‘new economy’ and has affected artistic practices as well as the road to becoming an artist. By discussing two female students’ paths to aesthetic education, the article sheds light on some of the sociopolitical and economic conditions that students in transition between elementary and upper secondary school in Sweden encounter when entering aesthetic education with musical aspirations. The results give insight into the ways in which young people reason when entering a precarious sector that demands a high amount of personal investment and planning. It also shows the ways in which social class still plays a pivotal role in the choice of and reflection on educational goals. Further, the article discusses how creative desires can transcend the economic instrumental expectations that surround the world in which the students live. Thus, it provides a contemporary understanding of how young people navigate a world of profitability.

  • The Gendered Mirror on the Wall : Satisfaction with Physical Appearance and Its Relationship to Global Self-esteem and Psychosomatic Complaints Among Adolescent Boys and Girls
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1103-3088 .- 1741-3222. ; 26:5, s. 525-541
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study investigated gender differences in satisfaction with physical appearance as a domain-specific aspect of self-esteem, and its association with global self-esteem and psychosomatic complaints. The data used was from the Stockholm School Survey, conducted among ninth grade students (15–16 years), with pooled information from six cross-sectional surveys in 2004–2014 (n = 32,117). Girls reported lower satisfaction with their appearance than boys. Satisfaction with appearance was more strongly associated with global self-esteem among girls, while the association with psychosomatic complaints was similar for both genders. There was a tendency towards a decline in satisfaction with appearance at the end of the study period for both genders, albeit more strong for girls. We conclude that satisfaction with appearance may contribute to our understanding of poor mental well-being among adolescent girls.

  • Young People’s Political Participation : A Public Pedagogy Challenge at the Municipal Level
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research. - : Sage Publications. - 1103-3088 .- 1741-3222. ; 26:2, s. 179-195
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In established democracies, a public pedagogy challenge for municipalities is to create, integrate and expand opportunities for young people’s political participation in decision-making. These opportunities are guided by different reasons, values and explanations as to why young people’s political participation is important. This article contributes empirical knowledge about the motives that direct young people’s political participation in decision-making at the municipal level. By means of a case study in a municipality in the west of Sweden, three recurrent motives have been identified: political participation as a means, democratic fostering and an intrinsic value. Based on political socialization theory, empirical findings and previous research, two major challenges in youth policy work are identified and discussed in terms of public pedagogy.

  • An Endeavour for Autonomy : How Girls Understand Their Lived Experiences of Being Referred to Secure Care
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1103-3088 .- 1741-3222. ; 26:1, s. 70-85
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In discussion of troubled adolescent girls, their mental health often is in focus and a discourse constructing girls as vulnerable victims therefore dominates Swedish social services and secure care. This article is an investigation of how the girls themselves are navigating the discursive terrain where understandings of troubled adolescent girls in secure care are regulated. The results show that even though the girls' stories show considerable similarities with what is previously known about troubled adolescent girls, their understandings of their lived experiences differ. The girls resist the dominating discourses that view them as victims by emphasizing their autonomy and own responsibility. However, in trying to distance themselves from devaluing interpretations, they take an attitude that ultimately obstructs their possibilities of getting help, since it inevitably puts them in opposition to the care system.

  • The democratic common sense : Young Swedes' understanding of democracy – theoretical features and educational incentives
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research. - London, United Kingdom : Sage Publications. - 1103-3088 .- 1741-3222. ; 18:2, s. 197-222
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article highlights ordinary young citizens’ understanding of democracy. In a system based on rule of the people, it is surprising how little attention scholars have paid to common-sense views of democracy. The article is based on focusgroup interviews with young Swedes. Their views of democracy are analyzed in the context of democratic theory. The results show that there is massive support among the youths for the democratic idea, that they see elite democracy as as self-evident form of democracy and that they consider democracy to be a problematic good, emphasizing their doubts about human capacity, limited ruling opportunities and problems around inequality and risky principles. References to research on Swedish education show that the conceptualizations in several respects reflect how democracy and citizenship are framed in Swedish schools. It is suggested that the results of the study can influence both the form and contentof civic education.

  • Movies and the Enchanted Mind : Emotional Comprehension and Spiritual Meaning Making Among Young Adults in Contemporary Sweden
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research. - : Sage Publications. - 1103-3088 .- 1741-3222. ; 25:1, s. 8-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The outcome of an empirical audience study in Sweden including questionnaires, focus groups and ten in-depth individual interviews discussing favorite films supports claims about viewers as active and playful (cf. Frampton 2006, Hoover 2006, Plantinga 2009). The soft side of mediatization processes is illustrated showing young adults experiencing enchantment through films (Jerslev 2006, Partridge 2008, Klinger 2008, Oliver & Hartmann 2010). The outcome is in line with a growing number of empirical case studies which support conclusions that both thinking and behavior are affected by film watching (Marsh 2007, Suckfüll 2010, Oliver & Hartmann 2010, Axelson 2014). The results of the interviews exploring specific scenes of idiosyncratic relevance support theories about fiction films as important sources for moral and spiritual reflection (Partridge 2004, Zillman 2005, Lynch 2007, Plantinga 2009).  The concept thick viewing is proposed for capturing these moments of film experience when profound and enchanted emotional interpretations take place.

  • Professional Position Positioned: The Interwoven Experience of Being a Young Adult and New at Work Analysed from a Relational Perspective of Age
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research. - : Sage Publications. - 1103-3088 .- 1741-3222. ; 32:2, s. 142-159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To gain an in-depth understanding of the position of being a young adult and new at work simultaneously, this study examines the doing of age in relation to others in the lives of young adults, rather than focusing on age as a category and/or developmental phase. The study focuses on being a young adult from a critical and relational perspective of age. Based on focus group interviews with young adults, mostly women, working in retail, the aim is to analyse the position of being a young adult while new at work through age-marked relationships. The results reveal how this position can be understood both in terms of security and insecurity. Security arises in the sense of opportunities for learning and leaving responsibilities to older and more experienced colleagues. Insecurity arises in the sense of being exposed to insecure employment, the risk of being allocated less challenging tasks and being judged for failures.
