  • Identity politics and uses of the past with European national museums
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nordisk Museologi. - Aarhus : Museumstjensten. - 1103-8152. ; :1, s. 117-124
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The article presents a research project on identity politics in Europe. European National Museums: Identity politics, the uses of the past and the European citizen (EuNaMus, www.eunamus.eu) explores the creation and power of the heritage created and presented by European national museums. National museums are defined and explored as processes of institutionalized negotiations where material collections and displays make claims and are recognized as articulating and representing national values and realities. Questions asked in the project are why, by whom, when, with what material, with what result and future possibilities are these museums shaped.

  • LHBTQI-perspektiv och kulturarv : Aspekter på urval, överväganden och tillrättalägganden.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nordisk Museologi. - Umeå, Sweden : Umeå Universitet, Institutionen för Kultur och Medier. - 1103-8152. ; :2, s. 3-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Todaymuseums strive to include LHBTQI perspectives in exhibitions and audiencedevelopment, as well as in the collections. This articleis an attempt to explore three cases of archiving LHBTQI memories andexperiences. We use a broad definition of “archiving” to also include digitalcollections, exhibitions and social media so as to investigate differentapproaches. The first case we approach is the website Unstraight Museum wherewe bring to the surface the ways in which its digital collection creates acollective memory, makes LHBTQI experiences visible and queer the officialheritage. Our second case is the Museum of World Culture’s exhibition Playground. Here we bring the attentionto the ways in which curatorial themes such as love and family invite straightpeople to identify with unstraight experiences. Our last case is activists’ blogs at the webplatform Tumblr, which we here view as an archive, waiting to be explored bycultural historians. For now it is temporary and ephemeral, in two respects. Firstly, the flowsare constantly updated and thereby changing. Secondly, there is no guaranteethat posts and accounts will be saved for the future.

  • Ingår i: Nordisk Museologi. - Sorö, Danmark : Museumshöjskolen. - 1103-8152. ; :2, s. 119-122

    • Pest insects pose a continuous and serious threat to museum objects that are organic in origin. Traditionally various chemical substances have been used for insect control, but in recent decades there has been increased concern about the disadvantages of this type of control strategy (Dawson 1988). Among the alternative control methods developed for museum use in recent decades, low oxygen treatment (Gilberg 1991)is of special interest. Using nitrogen or argon to replace oxygen, produces no residues and allows a conditioning of the gas regarding temperature and relative humidity. The first practical application in the Nordic countries of this method took place at Skokloster Castle in Central Sweden.

  • Museet i landskapet och landskapet i museet. En studie av relationer mellan arkitektur, maritimt museum och omgivande miljö.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nordisk Museologi. - : University of Oslo Library. - 1103-8152 .- 2002-0503. ; :1, s. 52-68
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article studies the relationship between architecture, the museum, the surrounding environment, and narrative, using the example of the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark (M/S Museet for Søfart). The museum is built underground, and it surrounds and traverses a dry dock. The conclusions are that the architecture creates an impression of being outside reality in a place where the laws of nature are abolished. Oblique angles and twisted shapes disturb one’s sense of balance and de-stabilize the full-body experience. Borders between reality and narrative, past and present are blurred. The museum architecture works as an unstraightening device, making the experience queer. Texts in the exhibits refer to a sailor as someone who is neither among the living nor the dead, and he is referred to as an icon for both hetero- and homosexual people. The narrative created in this M/S museum is a narrative about a queer sailor and a world outside reality.

  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Nordisk Museologi. - 1103-8152. ; :2003:2, s. 109-139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Free space and legal space This article takes as its point of departure in the distinction made by André Gorz between legal space and free space, the former being of a material nature defined by authorities and legal regulations, the latter immaterial, upheld by common practice among citizens representing cultural values in the environment that transcend institutionally applied borders. Historical and aesthetic values are often an important part of the free space, accordingly authorities and agencies defending cultural values related to specific sites - even when they are legally founded - often find themselves in conflict with other agencies in charge of the economic development of the community. This conflict, which causes dilemmas in political decision making, is demonstrated using two examples, both very important motorway construction projects, one in the southwest of Sweden, the other in the north of the country, both touching on areas with great historical significance. According to environmental legislation a developer must ask permission to realize his project and must state the consequences of his landuse. When there are conflicting interests in the area the developer is obliged to present an analysis of the consequences and suggest how the damage caused to these conflicting interests may be reduced. This is generally done by presenting alternative sitings for the road. Although in these examples the road projects touched upon areas that are declared World Heritage Sites it is shown that the values asserted by antiquarian authorities are given a very low rating compared to alternatives representing economic gains. The economic gains are measurable and have a limited time horizon but they count for more than cultural values which are immeasurable.

  • Hembygden som självkännedom och folkbildning: Theodor Hellman och daningen av en poetisk hembygd och centralanstalt för en nationell enhetsskola på Murberget i Härnösand
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nordisk Museologi. - 1103-8152. ; :2010: 1, s. 7-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 'Know thyself': this antique aphorism was re-actualised in the late nineteenth century as a credo for the museums of cultural history in Scandinavia. In this essay, this aphorism will be explored in close relation to the concept of hembygd. It is argued that these two concepts were intertwined into a foundation for an organic knowledge theory, which was in turn spread to a political nationalistic sphere and into the planning of a national unitary school for all classes in Sweden. In the early twentieth century, the museum curator and elementary school inspector Theodor Hellman formulated his concept of hembygd. Through his contemporary, the philosopher Hans Larsson, the concept will be presented as an intuitive whole, i.e. as a higher poetic order of knowledge in which thought intertwines with feeling. I argue that Hellman in his hembygd reworked Larsson’s idea of ‘intuition’ to a nationalistic essence. This hembygd took the Swedish people back home to a true sense of reality, to its national roots, and to an organic understanding of its place in history and society. Also, to attain scholarly legitimacy, the concept of hembygd was blended with general aspects of Cultural Darwinism to a cocktail of idealism and naturalism. As such an essence, hembygd was fundamental for the heritage institutions established in Härnösand after the dissolution of the Swedish-Norwegian Union in 1905.
