  • An Interactive Textile Hanging : Textile, Context, and Interaction
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Studies in Material Thinking. - : Auckland University of Technology. - 1177-6234. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents three scenarios in which we explore different possibilities for interactive textile hangings, textile hangings that are knitted and attached to servomotors. We have identified a series of variables that address the relationship between the expressions of the changeable pattern, created by rotating motors, and the unchangeable textile pattern. We use these variables, combined with contextual dichotomies, to discuss the relationships between the textile expression, the temporal expression, the place and the interactions for these scenarios.

  • Editorial : Where Art, Technology and Design Meet
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Studies in Material Thinking. - : de Freitas, Nancy, Auckland University of Technology. - 1177-6234. ; Vol 7, s. 03-06
  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • With a foundation in artistic practice, the Ambience´11 conference was organised as a meeting place where researchers from digital architecture, smart textiles, new media art and interaction design communities could come together to discuss and share ideas on the new expressional crossroads of art and technology and to take new ideas back to their own communities. As post modernism slowly fades away, a new interest in the expressional possibilities of constructions, techniques and materials, as well as the craftsmanship of artistic work, is becoming more and more visible in artistic practices. It is like revisiting “free” modernistic experimentation not bound by the utopian systems and dogmas targeted by post modernistic critique.

  • Working Patches
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Studies in Material Thinking. - : Auckland University of Technology. - 1177-6234. ; 07:04
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses accountability in academic and artistic writing. We use the narrative position of the patchwork to tell stories of the travelling exhibition Threads - A Mobile Sewing Circle. This particular narrative position is chosen as it can handle fragments, as well as multiple voices and perspectives, while still being held together. In addition, we argue that Threads is similar to the practice and object of patchwork. It comes into existence through processes of exclusion and inclusion of connections, alliances, and separations – through putting things in relation to one another.

  • Design Education, Practice, and Research: On Building a Field of Inquiry
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Studies in Material Thinking. - 1177-6234. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reviews how the fields of architecture and design have developed during recent decades and discusses the relations and synergistic interplay between three constituent components: practice, education, and research. Design education has matured both as a field of practice and of inquiry since becoming a fully recognized component of the triadic interplay between these three parts. However, to date, these developments have mainly been discussed in terms of research and creative practice, and have not been discussed in terms of educationalpractice as an important, mediating factor. We argue that the three components, noted above, have become more equal with one another and more recognized in practice and academia and, further, that a phenomenon of “permeability” of various practices within the “continuum from creative practice to scientific research” has emerged. We further note that a new group of professionals combine theroles of professional practitioners, educators, and field-specific researchers, and argue that these “new practitioners” can contribute to a more robust, self-confident,
