  • Is There an Association Between Childhood Conditions and Exclusionfrom Social Relations in Later Life?
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Polish Sociological Review. - Warsaw, Poland : Polish Sociological Association. - 1231-1413 .- 2657-4276. ; 223:3, s. 369-393
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

Secondaryanalysis of SHARE. Weak and inconsistent consequences of the primary socialization context were found, however, in many cases, the expected effect is missing or contradictory. No impacts on the structure of the family oforigin were found. For men, we often found a small, but significant effect of physical aspects of childhood living. For women, the cultural capital of family of origin and the quality of relations with parents seem to have a greatereffect. Findings suggest that life-long resilience factors play an important role in the process of counterbalancingchildhood living conditions. Early socialization consequences will not necessarily lead to ESR at old age.

  • Gated Housing as a Reflection of Public-Private Divide : on the Popularity of Gated Communities in Poland
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Polish Sociological Review. - 1231-1413. ; :181, s. 87-102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to suggest an explanatory set of factors to the popularity of gated housing in the Polish context. The explanation focuses on the divide between the public and the private sphere and encompasses economic, cultural and institutional explanations to the gating phenomenon. The empirical material consists of interviews, discourse analysis, a questionnaire, official reports and data, and legal regulation analysis. The Polish example display that both the remnants from the past and the contemporary ideals can be derived from the public-private divide. This divide has played a central role in the negotiations on urban space, the role of housing, and the identities and activities connected to housing and spatial issues since 1989. It is argued that the introduction of market economy followed by socioeconomic inequalities, has resulted in specific forms of creative strategies for individual actions among Poles and to the popularity of gated housing.

  • On fatherhood, Masculinities and family policies in Poland and Sweden : a comparative study
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Polish Sociological review. - : Polish Sociological association. - 1231-1413. ; 188:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article seeks to identify the relationships between fatherhood, masculinities, and the welfare state. The paper is based on fifty-two interviews conducted with Polish and Swedish fathers living with their biological children and their partners. A comparison of Swedish and Polish fathers enables us to comprehend how everyday practices and men’s thinking about parenthood and gender roles are connected to hegemonic masculinities models and family policy systems. The study shows how definitions of parental roles adopted in family policy influence men’s engagement in caring activities and the domestic sphere, as well as how they can help in the reconstruction of hegemonic masculinity and traditional gender order within family life.

  • Game of the City Re-negotiated: the Polish Urban Re-generation Movement as an Emerging Actor in a Strategic Action Field
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Polish Sociological Review. - 1231-1413. ; , s. 291-308
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, many Polish cities have become the sites where a new urban movement emerges, shaped in the meeting between the engagement of neighborhood activists around what Mergler (2008) has called a "concrete narrative" of particular space and everyday needs, and the inspiration of internationally connected "norm entrepreneurs" (Finnemore and Sikkink 1998). As part of the movement formation, a number of small groups and local associations have become important in the process of linking local issues to the global dispute over quality of life in urban areas. Although the process is multi-faceted and the involved actors diverse in nature, we claim that it can be described and analyzed by using the recently developed framework of Strategic Action Fields (Fligstein and McAdam 2011, 2012). We illustrate how this new group of civil society actors have become important in the "game of the city" in Poland-thus re-negotiating the public private divide, which is a crucial part of the urban policy field in-between a retreating city-level public sector and the entrance of corporate actors.
