  • Displaced diaspora second-home tourism : an explorative study of Swedish-Iranians and their second-home purchases in Turkey
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Tourism. - Zagreb : Institute for Tourism. - 1332-7461 .- 1849-1545. ; 67:3, s. 239-252
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This explorative study aims to gain more insight into Swedish-Iranians' purchase of second homes in Turkey. The study is based on 22 questionnaires (19 of them from owners and buyers), field observation, and participant observation. Motives behind owners' and buyers' purchases are: other Swedish-Iranian friends/relatives bought there; cultural proximity; absence of visa restriction for Iranian citizens; geographical proximity to Iran and relatives living in Iran; economic factors, including the low prices and costs and investment for retirement; and the climate. The respondents are well-integrated into Swedish society and have access to different types of resources which facilitate the purchase, but they also show the potential to partially become integrated socioculturally into their Turkish communities. A meaningful proportion of them are seriously planning to live permanently in Turkey after retirement, but the majority stay there for longer periods or semi-permanently. Despite some limitations, this study makes an important contribution to the area of diaspora second-home tourism and to the field of diaspora studies.

  • Tactile Tourism : Tourist Attractions to Touch
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Tourism. - Zagreb : Croatian National Tourist Board. - 1332-7461 .- 1849-1545. ; 71:3, s. 553-567
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present article explores tourist attractions that include touch as a significant component of the tourist’splace-related experience. We have chosen to label this phenomenon “tactile tourism”. The tradition of touchingattractions is not new but has been a central part of the experience of specific place-related interests for a longtime. However, despite its frequent and often significant presence in tourist destinations, few studies in tourismresearch study the phenomenon. The article is based on a theoretical line of reasoning which starts from a fewconcrete examples of different places in Europe where we have identified tactile features relevant to tourism. The empirical material for our discussion has been collected partly through e-mail correspondence with touristorganizations in the places selected for the study and partly through articles in social media and other relevantsecondary data. This tactile experience contributes a substantial share of the primary enticement of the attractionand simultaneously invests the place with meaning, which in turn attracts tourists.

  • ‘A place without living standards’ - Defining creativity amongst ‘talents’ and ‘creatives’ in Gothenburg, Sweden.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Tourism. - 1332-7461 .- 1849-1545. ; 62:2, s. 201-216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Building on previous research concerning the location preferences of human capital (Niedomysl and Hansen, 2010; Borggren & Eriksson 2014) talents (Hansen & Winther, 2010), milieu (Buttimer, 1969; Drake, 2003) and the ‘creative class’ (Florida 2002), this paper studies creative milieu from the perspective of individuals engaged in different creative occupations in Gothenburg, Sweden. Drawing on the background of structural economic change, the key competitive asset of attracting skilled workers and place-marketing to promote regional development, the aim of this study is to ‘take a step back’ and let representatives of these individuals first define a creative milieu, and second to investigate, in retrospect, whether this creative milieu has exercised any significant influence on residence and location choices by way of in-depth interviews. Results show that the creative milieu as described by the respondents constitutes a space containing human interaction, the possibility to think freely and having the option of choosing to participate in various activities. It is suggested that further understandings of creative milieu would be based on the social context, or more precisely the social space (Buttimer, 1969), of the observer and of how said person ‘justifies’ creative milieu from a professional standpoint, i.e. from the perspective of one’s occupation.

  • The Impacts of Covid-19 on the Tourism Sector : Changes, Adaptations and Challenges
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Tourism. - : Portal of Croatian scientific and professional journals - HRČAK. - 1332-7461 .- 1849-1545. ; 70:3, s. 465-479
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This exploratory study charts the transformation of the tourism sector caused by the COVID-19 crisis. The article dissects five key domains of industry transformation: accelerated digitalisation, business model flexibility, human resources, travel restrictions, and risk perception and crisis management. It delineates the industry's changes, adaptations, and associated challenges in each domain. A review and content analysis of 240 publicly available online documents was conducted. The results provide managerial implications and avenues for future research in tourism, including the hybridisation of tourism products, transformation of the service encounter style, adaptation to a shifting travel mode, and increased risk awareness and preparedness.

  • A knowledge destination framework for tourism sustainability
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Tourism. - 1332-7461 .- 1849-1545. ; 6:2, s. 121-148
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on Grant's (1996) knowledge-based view of the fi rm, Jafari's (2001) knowledge-based platform ofthinking and Schianetz, Kavanagh and Lockington (2007a) Learning Tourism Destination, the KnowledgeDestination Framework (Höpken, Fuchs, Keil & Lexhagen, 2011) is introduced and a Web-based DestinationManagement Information system (DMIS) is presented. It is illustrated how knowledge creation, exchange and application processes can be improved by applying a Business Intelligence approach. By focusingon Online-Analytical Processing (OLAP), exemplarily for the Swedish tourism destination of Åre, it ishighlighted how DMIS can be used as a monitor for measuring the proportion of tourists with the smallestecological footprint (Dolnicar, Crouch & Long, 2008; Dolnicar & Leisch, 2008). After a discussion of studylimitations, future research steps are outlined. Th e paper concludes by providing some critical remarks on thepolitical economics of sustainability on a global scale and by outlining policy implications for the governanceof sustainability at the level of tourism destinations.

  • Trails for Tourism and Outdoor Recreation: A Systematic Literature Review
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Tourism. - 1332-7461 .- 1849-1545. ; 65:4, s. 488-508
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Trails are important elements in the natural and cultural landscape, and many ancient pathways have developed into routes of great significance for recreation and tourism in contemporary societies. By conducting a systematic quantitative literature review, this paper report on the status of international trail research and analyzes some of the key content with focus on trails for tourism and outdoor recreation in non-urban settings. For this purpose, we reviewed 195 research papers published in peer-reviewed academic journals. Results show that research on trails for tourism and outdoor recreation is primarily from English-speaking Western countries. The most studied trail-based activity is hiking, but there has been an increase in the number of studies researching multiple activities. Results also show that international trail research to a large extent is based on the natural sciences, and focus on environmental and managerial aspects of trail use. This review identifies gaps in trail research, especially in a socio-cultural context on topics such as heritage and public health. Research on conflicts between different recreational trail-based activities is also relatively scarce, as well as studies concerning conflicts between trail-based recreation interests and other land-use interests. We also identify a need for an exploration of the trail concept, as research has not yet articulated a clear definition of what a trail is. The paper also includes analyses of changes in trail-related research over time.

  • Snowballing in 35oC : an inquiry into second-home tourism in Mozambique
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Tourism. - Zagreb. - 1332-7461 .- 1849-1545. ; 67:3, s. 311-317
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Increased mobility has played an important role in promoting and developing tourism as a global phenomenon. One result since the late 1990s has been the development of the well-researched second-home tourism phenomenon in the Global North. Fewer studies on second-home tourism have been carried out in the Global South, especially in the least developed countries (LDCs). The difficulty of collecting reliable data in LDCs is presented as a key contributing factor to the lack of studies. Whereas researchers in, for example, the Nordic countries have access to comprehensive public registries of second homes enabling large-scale data-driven research, studying this phenomenon in data-poor contexts requires appropriate fieldwork methods and strategies. The following research note discusses snowballing and participant observation methods employed in fieldwork on second-home tourism in two small coastal Mozambican towns. It concludes with a brief discussion on the findings and the prospects for future research in historically and socio-economically comparable locations.
