  • First fungus gnats of genus Manota Williston (Diptera: Mycetophilidae) from Japan
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Entomological Science. - : Wiley. - 1343-8786 .- 1479-8298. ; 13:2, s. 226-233
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The genus Manota is recorded from Japan for the first time. Three new species, Manota satoyamanis, Manota indahae and Manota tunoae spp. nov., are described, based on specimens collected in an ecological sampling program of arthropods in the "satoyama" landscape of Ishikawa Prefecture. "Satoyama" represents the traditional rural landscape of Japan, which is characterized by a mosaic of secondary forests, plantations, ponds and rice paddy fields. The new species raise the number of Palearctic Manota species from five to eight.

  • First records of Microptila Ris (Trichoptera: Hydroptilidae) from Japan, with description of a new species
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Entomological Science. - : Wiley. - 1343-8786 .- 1479-8298. ; 12:2, s. 177-181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Microptila orienthula, sp. n. from Japan is described and illustrated based on adults of both sexes. The new species represents the first finding of Microptila in the Eastern Palaearctic Region, and it appears to be more closely related to Oriental species of Microptila than to the two Western Palaearctic species. The finding of a new species with affinities to the Oriental species as far northeast as Japan is noteworthy but fits well with general zoogeographical affinities of the Japanese fauna to the Oriental Region. The type locality indicates a hygropetric habitat for the larva, in agreement with the known larval habitat of the European type species Microptila minutissima Ris, 1897.

  • Inflammatory effects of very low-density lipoprotein and fatty acids.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Future Cardiology. - : Future medicine. - 1744-8298 .- 1479-6678. ; 2:3, s. 315-323
  • Forskningsöversikt (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • High plasma triacylglycerol (triglyceride, TG) levels is a risk factor for atherosclerosis. Very large lipoproteins, such as chylomicrons, alone are not considered atherogenic, but TG-rich remnant lipoproteins can penetrate into the vascular wall. Importantly, accumulating evidence suggests that all TG-rich lipoproteins stimulate cytokine expression in circulating monocytes. Very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) stimulates monocyte adhesion to endothelial cells and expression of inflammatory genes in macrophages. Furthermore, fatty acids released from large lipoproteins can stimulate both vascular cells and circulating monocytes. It is likely that fatty acids released from TG-rich lipoproteins contribute to atherogenesis, but the role of fatty acids in ischemic heart disease is not as direct as that of cholesterol. Fatty acids influence plasma lipoprotein levels and either stimulate or suppress numerous cellular functions relevant to atherogenesis. While certain n-3 fatty acids are good for health, most other medium- to long-chain fatty acids appear to promote inflammation in cell culture studies and need to be studied further. Nevertheless, the existing evidence supports the general conclusion that TG-rich lipoproteins and fatty acids greatly accelerate the progression of atherosclerosis. This may be because of their inflammatory effects.

  • Epicardial fat study-AG : relationship between echocardiographic epicardial fat and coronary artery disease in patients after invasive coronary artery angiography
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Future Cardiology. - : Future Medicine Ltd. - 1479-6678 .- 1744-8298. ; 16:6, s. 635-643
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Epicardial fat increase has not yet a clear correlation with coronary artery disease (CAD). Aim: This study had as goal to demonstrate a relationship between an increase of epicardial fat thickness (EFT) and CAD. Materials & methods: In this observational study, we included 234 patients who underwent invasive coronary angiography. Before invasive coronary angiography, all patients underwent echocardiographic-2D for evaluation of EFT and they were divided into groups based on Gensini score and also on Syntax score. Results: EFT was significantly correlated to the presence and severity of CAD assessed by Gensini score with a cut-off value of 5.2 mm (sensitivity of 90.9%-specificity of 87.3%- area under the ROC curve = 92.1%). Conclusion: EFT increase (fat index ≥5.2 mm) evaluated by echocardiographic-2D could be considered as a risk factor for predicting CAD.

  • Multiomics, virtual reality and artificial intelligence in heart failure
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Future cardiology. - : Future Medicine Ltd. - 1744-8298 .- 1479-6678. ; 17:8, s. 1335-1347
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: Multiomics delivers more biological insight than targeted investigations. We applied multiomics to patients with heart failure (HF) and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), with machine learning applied to advanced ECG (AECG) and echocardiography artificial intelligence (Echo AI). Patients & methods: In total, 46 patients with HFrEF and 20 controls underwent metabolomic profiling, including liquid/gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and solid-phase microextraction volatilomics in plasma and urine. HFrEF was defined using left ventricular (LV) global longitudinal strain, EF and N-terminal pro hormone BNP. AECG and Echo AI were performed over 5 min, with a subset of patients undergoing a virtual reality mental stress test. Results: A-ECG had similar diagnostic accuracy as N-terminal pro hormone BNP for HFrEF (area under the curve = 0.95, 95% CI: 0.85–0.99), and correlated with global longitudinal strain (r = -0.77, p < 0.0001), while Echo AI-generated measurements correlated well with manually measured LV end diastolic volume r = 0.77, LV end systolic volume r = 0.8, LVEF r = 0.71, indexed left atrium volume r = 0.71 and indexed LV mass r = 0.6, p < 0.005. AI-LVEF and other HFrEF biomarkers had a similar discrimination for HFrEF (area under the curve AI-LVEF = 0.88; 95% CI: -0.03 to 0.15; p = 0.19). Virtual reality mental stress test elicited arrhythmic biomarkers on AECG and indicated blunted autonomic responsiveness (alpha 2 of RR interval variability, p = 1 × 10-4) in HFrEF. Conclusion: Multiomics-related machine learning shows promise for the assessment of HF.

  • Morphology and distribution of ovipositor sensilla of female cotton leaf worm Spodoptera littoralis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and evidence for gustatory function
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Entomological Science. - : Wiley. - 1343-8786. ; 19, s. 9-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ovipositor of Spodoptera littoralis has many sensilla, which implies a distinct sensory function of this organ in the assessment of the egg laying substrates and placement of eggs. The ovipositor is composed of two papillae densely packed with sensilla. Scanning electron microscopy showed that there are four categories of sensilla chaetica (s.chaetica), characterized based on differences in distribution, length and morphology, distributed on each papilla: Type I with 69 +/- 2.9 sensilla on each papilla (length: 29-163m) distributed at the base; Type II with 19 +/- 1.8 sensilla (length: 287-446m) distributed medially; Type III with 120 +/- 7.8 sensilla (length: 62-156m) distributed distally; and Type IV 8 +/- 0.9 sensilla (length: 72-91m) scattered between Type III sensilla. The structure of s.chaeticaTypes I-III suggests a mechanosensory function, whereas electrophysiological analysis of s.chaeticaType IV showed responses from four gustatory neurons and one mechanosensory neuron. Of the chemoreceptive neurons, one responded to salt, one to the secondary compound caffeine, one to sugars, mainly sucrose and fructose, and lastly one potentially to water. Behavioral studies are needed to verify the role of these sensilla during choice of oviposition site.

  • Pediatric Micra leadless pacemaker implantation via the internal jugular and femoral vein : A single-center, US experience
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Future Cardiology. - : Future Medicine Ltd. - 1479-6678 .- 1744-8298. ; 17:6, s. 1116-1122
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: In the pediatric population, conventional transvenous and epicardial pacemaker systems carry complications such as lead distortion due to growth/activity, in addition to other lead/pocket complications. Materials & methods: A retrospective review of pediatric leadless pacing at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital from 2018 to 2020 was performed. Rationale for pacing, demographics of patients, thresholds and longevity of devices were recorded. Results: Seven leadless pacemaker insertions and one removal were performed successfully, in patients weighing between 19 kg and 58 kg. Three patients had Micra implantation via internal jugular vein. One pericardial effusion occurred perioperatively in a 19 kg patient with baseline thrombocytopenia, sideroblastic anemia and Pearson Marrow Pancreas syndrome. Conclusion: Leadless pacemaker implantation/early retrieval is feasible in pediatric patients.

  • Association of GDF-15, hs-cTnT and NT-proBNP with coronary artery disease in patients undergoing elective angiography
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Future Cardiology. - : Future Medicine Ltd. - 1479-6678 .- 1744-8298. ; 18:8, s. 635-646
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: This study investigated the association between plasma levels of GDF-15, hs-cTnT and NT-proBNP and the presence of coronary artery disease (CAD) in stable patients referred for elective coronary angiography. Methods: The outcome of CAD was defined as an ordinal variable with 3 levels. The association between each biomarker and the outcome was tested using the Winell and Lindback method. Results: In unadjusted analysis of 252 patients, GDF-15 and hs-cTnT were associated with the presence and extent of CAD. In multivariate regression analysis including traditional risk factors, this association was no longer significant. Conclusion: NT-proBNP, GDF-15 and hs-cTnT plasma levels do not seem to improve the predictive ability of traditional risk factors for CAD in stable patients referred for coronary angiography. Plain language summary: This study aimed to look at a possible association between blood levels of three molecules (GDF-15, hs-cTnT and N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide [NT-proBNP]) and the presence of coronary artery disease (CAD) in stable patients referred for coronary angiography. Three CAD degrees of severity were identified: no CAD, 1- or 2-vessel CAD and 3-vessel or left main CAD. The association between each of the three blood molecules and CAD was studied using a specific statistical method. In the 252 consecutive patients enrolled, the two molecules GDF-15 and hs-cTnT were significantly associated with the presence and extent of CAD, while NT-proBNP was not. However, when the statistical analysis was adjusted for the traditional risk factors of CAD (age, gender, smoking, diabetes, etc.), the association of GDF-15 and hs-cTnT with CAD was no longer significant. NT-proBNP, GDF-15 and hs-cTnT blood levels do not seem to be independent predictive tools for CAD in stable patients referred for coronary angiography.
