  • Religion in the Nordic Countries : Between Private and Public
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Contemporary Religion. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1353-7903 .- 1469-9419. ; 29:1, s. 61-74
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new visibility of religion in public life can be observed in the Nordic countries. This visibility is not due to a popular claim for a return of religion in the public sphere. As the research conducted at Uppsala University indicates, the visibility of religion in the Nordic countries reflects several concurring factors: namely the state’s continued relationship with churches and other religions; the growth of new forms of social exclusion drawing religion into public discussions on ethical and social issues; a growing religious pluralism prompting political and legal regulation; and a spirituality relating to existential and quality of life issues. The results raise important questions on Nordic modernity. They suggest that religion becomes public in several ways and emerges as an arena that connects the private and the public beyond conventional distinctions.

  • Design and the digital Bible : persuasive technology and religious reading
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Contemporary Religion. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1353-7903 .- 1469-9419. ; 32:2, s. 205-219
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyses two 'digital Bibles', products that allow the user to engage with the Bible through the screen and speakers of his/her mobile phone, tablet or computer. Both products, 'YouVersion' and 'GloBible', have been created by Evangelical Christian companies. I argue that both are designed to train the user in traditional Evangelical Christian understandings of the work of reading. Digital media offer new opportunities to guide and influence the user, and this article applies the concepts of 'persuasive technologies' and 'procedural rhetoric' to analyse the design intentions of the two digital Bibles. This approach helps us to appreciate the significance of the material form of a sacred text as a vehicle for religious socialisation and raises important questions about the potential for digital media to re-shape traditional relationships of power in Evangelical Christian communities.

  • Churches in the 2020 elections and political protests in Belarus : raising voices at the time of uncertainties and turmoil
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Contemporary Religion. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1353-7903 .- 1469-9419.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2020, the religious factor turned out to gain importance to both protest mobilizations and to government repression in Belarus, where the initiatives of religious groups had fostered collective action in the state system that was punitive against any dissent. This happened for the first time in the country, which had been affected by the legacies of Soviet anti-religious policies. The forms of protest that churches could suggest fitted neatly into the non-democratic settings of Belarus, providing a necessary opportunity structure for otherwise forbidden mobilizations. Analyzing the attitudes of the Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant Churches toward the events of 2020 in Belarus, this research note discusses why their social contract with the authoritarian regime was broken. We argue that the churches' stance and the role they played at a time of political turmoil confirmed their status as influential non-state actors who are capable of having their say in the rough circumstances of an authoritarian and repressive political regime. At the same time, it has also confirmed the limits of the authoritarian state to influence religious institutions and the growing opportunities for clergy and laypeople from these institutions to have a common say on important issues of moral and ethical dimensions, inspired by Christian principles and values.
