  • Regional differences in health status in China : population health-related quality of life results from the National Health Services Survey 2008
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Health & Place. - Stockholm : Karolinska Institutet, Dept of Learning, Informatics, Management and Ethics. - 1873-2054 .- 1353-8292.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: to measure, describe and analyse regional differences in health-related quality of life measured by EQ-5D in China. Data were obtained via face-to-face interviews on a national representative sample (n=120,703, 15-103 years). The EQ-5D instrument was used to measure health status. Results: Rural areas had worse health status than urban areas. Health status was worst in western areas and best in eastern areas, and such disparities were profounder in rural areas. In urban areas, health status was best in middle-sized cities. In rural areas, health status increased with the economic development level of a county. Conclusion: Our study enhances understanding of the urban-rural differences and east-middle-west differences in health and sheds light on inequalities in health status between different city categories in the urban areas and county categories in the rural areas.

  • Architecture for the silver generation : Exploring the meaning of appropriate space for ageing in a Swedish municipality
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Health and Place. - : Elsevier BV. - 1353-8292 .- 1873-2054. ; 17:2, s. 572-587
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on an architecture competition for the silver generation, namely those aged 65 years and older. Twenty-seven Swedish informants were interviewed using an interviewing guide that included a photographic survey. The informants emphasised aesthetic dimensions in architecture for the prolongation of ageing in place and independent living in a residential home. This study highlights the individual adjustment of space, and the integrated location in existing urban settings near nature. Based on the findings, a habitational model for exploring the appropriate space for ageing is formulated. It suggests that architecture through location and spatial features needs to generate positive associations with the users.

  • Does contextual unemployment matter for health status across the life course? A longitudinal multilevel study exploring the link between neighbourhood unemployment and functional somatic symptoms
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Health and Place. - : Elsevier BV. - 1353-8292 .- 1873-2054. ; 43, s. 113-120
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines whether neighbourhood unemployment is related to functional somatic symptoms, independently of the individual employment, across the life course and at four specific life course periods (age 16, 21, 30 and 42). Self-reported questioner data was used from a 26-year prospective Swedish cohort (n=1010) with complementary neighbourhood register data. A longitudinal and a set of age-specific cross-sectional hierarchal linear regressions was carried out. The results suggest that living in a neighbourhood with high unemployment has implications for residents' level of functional somatic symptoms, regardless of their own unemployment across time, particularly at age 30.

  • Place, discourse and vulnerability-a qualitative study of young adults living in a Swedish urban poverty zone.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Health and Place. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-2054 .- 1353-8292. ; 10:3, s. 259-272
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents findings from a qualitative study of young adults living in a relatively deprived metropolitan area in Sweden. The analysis of interview data yielded four separate types of neighbourhood discourses, each related to a major hegemonic ‘discourse of the problematic area’. The discursive model was used to disclose different patterns of vulnerability, at both the individual and the community level. The discourses are suggested to function as mechanisms through which the spatial context, defined in structural and relational terms, could be linked to health and well-being.

  • Neighborhood deprivation and inequities in coronary heart disease among patients with diabetes mellitus: A multilevel study of 334,000 patients.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Health and Place. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-2054 .- 1353-8292. ; 18:4, s. 877-882
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We used multilevel models to investigate whether the odds of coronary heart disease (CHD) is higher in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) living in deprived neighborhoods versus those living in wealthy neighborhoods. The Swedish nationwide prescription register was used to identify 334,000 patients aged 30 years and older with DM. The OR of CHD was significantly higher among patients with DM living in deprived neighborhoods than among patients with DM living in wealthy neighborhoods. These findings are useful for clinicians working in deprived neighborhoods. Future research could focus on how to reduce inequities in CHD among patients with DM.

  • Perceived green qualities were associated with neighborhood satisfaction, physical activity, and general health: Results from a cross-sectional study in suburban and rural Scania, southern Sweden.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Health and Place. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-2054 .- 1353-8292. ; 18:6, s. 1374-1380
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study using cross-sectional survey data from suburban and rural Scania, Sweden (N=24,847), we assessed how the recently validated index score of area-aggregated perceived green neighborhood qualities (Scania Green Score; SGS), and the five distinct qualities within this index were associated with three self-reported indicators of well-being: neighborhood satisfaction, physical activity and general health. Effect sizes were compared with objective (GIS-based) assessments of the same five qualities. Area-aggregated SGS was positively associated with neighborhood satisfaction, physical activity and general health. The association with general health was mediated by physical activity and neighborhood satisfaction. Three perceived qualities had salutogenic potential: historical remains (culture), silence such that sounds of nature can be heard (serene) and species richness (lush). Spacious and wild were not appreciated. Some independent positive effects of the GIS-based index were noted, but could not be consistently attributed to specific qualities. Perceived qualities within green areas, not merely quantity, are related to aspects of well-being in suburban and rural areas.

  • Nursing work and sensory experiences of hospital design : A before and after qualitative study following a move to all-single room inpatient accommodation
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Health and Place. - : Elsevier. - 1353-8292 .- 1873-2054. ; 46, s. 121-129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The embodied experience of nursing practice is rarely studied. Drawing on data from an internationally relevant larger study conducted in 2013–14, here we explore the sensory dimension of the embodied experiences of nursing staff working on two acute NHS hospital wards before and after a move to all-single room inpatient accommodation. We undertook a secondary analysis of 25 interviews with nursing staff (12 before and 13 after the move with half [13/25] using photographs taken by participants) from a mixed-method before-and-after study. This analysis focused on the sensory dimensions of nursing staff's experiences of their working practices and the effect of the built environment upon these. Drawing on Pallasmaa's theoretocal insights, we report how the all-single room ward design prioritises ‘focused vision’ and hinders peripheral perception, whilst the open ward environment is rich in contextual and preconscious information. We suggest all-single room accommodation may offer staff an impoverished experience of caring for patients and of working with each other.

  • A Cultural - spatial analysis of excreting, recirculation of human excreta and health - The case of North West Frontier Province, Pakistan
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Health and Place. - : Elsevier. - 1353-8292 .- 1873-2054. ; 17:1, s. 57-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sanitation issue is entering the development discussion and the UN proclaimed 2008 the year of sanitation. The study aims to understand the cultural–spatial dimension among Muslim communities of excreting and recirculating human excreta in North West Frontier Province in Pakistan. Information on local perceptions and cultural understanding was collected through interviews, group discussions and observations in four selected villages. The study identifies a diversity of excreting practices among age groups and sexes, and varied adherence to expressed cultural norms. Interviewees express less resentment towards urine compared to faeces, however, their negative attitude subsides when faecal matter is mixed with water since this changes appearance, odour—and cultural meaning. Religious dictums about excreta and sewage accommodate contradicting routine behaviours to cater for needs of residents and farmers. For example, when mothers pray wearing soiled clothing, and in the use of wastewater as fertiliser for food production. The excreta-related practices are compatible with good hygienic behaviour as outlined by WHO Guidelines, except for children who are allowed to defecate anywhere.
