  • Innovation in the hospitality industry : Firm or location?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Tourism Economics. - : Sage Publications. - 1354-8166 .- 2044-0375. ; 23:8, s. 1591-1614
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The hospitality industry is a rapidly growing revenue generator in many countries and is becoming economically important for generating employment and for integrating of immigrants into the labor market. As an industry where firms face fierce competition, it is important for the firms to maintain their competitiveness by distinguishing themselves from others through continuous improvements and innovations. In this article, we investigate the determinants of innovation in the hospitality industry by analyzing survey data gathered from over 900 firms in Sweden. In the analysis, we differentiate between firm-specific and location-specific features. We conclude that the most important characteristics that explain innovation lie within the firm itself, not the location. These results provide important insights regarding firm- versus location-placed innovation policies.

  • Geopolitical risk and tourism demand in emerging economies
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Tourism Economics. - : SAGE PUBLICATIONS LTD. - 1354-8166 .- 2044-0375. ; 25:6, s. 997-1005
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we investigate the impact of geopolitical risk (GPR) on international tourism demand in emerging economies. We have found that impact of GPR is not homogeneous for every country in our sample; for example, some countries are affected heavily by GPR and others are mostly immune to GPR shocks. In general, for countries that have attractive tourism destinations, the impact of GPR is minimal, indicating that if international tourists desperately want to go a destination, they do not take GPR seriously. In addition, the tsunami impact of GPR is not the same for all affected countries. For some countries, the GPR shocks have an impact within 2 to 3 months of its first hit, while for other countries, the impact is felt over longer periods.

  • Can Economics Explain Where All Inclusive Deals Are Offered?
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Tourism Economics. - : SAGE Publications. - 1354-8166 .- 2044-0375. ; 19:2, s. 339-348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates why all-inclusive travel packages are offered at some hotels but not at others. Using the theory of transaction cost, it is argued that all-inclusive contracts mitigate a hold-up problem and that the severity of this problem varies with regard to the hotel's distance from the resort centre. This hypothesis is tested empirically against data from 3,798 hotel offers and is strongly supported. Additionally, some country-specific mechanisms related to the general price level and the degree of corruption are analysed. Countries with all-inclusive offers are characterized by a low price level and high corruption.

  • Tourist accommodation effects of festivals
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Tourism Economics. - : SAGE Publications. - 1354-8166 .- 2044-0375. ; 12:2, s. 291-302
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is increasing interest in arranging festivals or special events in many cities. This paper presents an econometric model to account for the tourism accommodation impact of such events. The autoregressive count data model incorporates some of the more important factors in the planning and evaluation of an event, such as spare capacity, displacement effects and the costs that visitors face. The results for two large Swedish festivals indicate that there are some displacement effects but that the net tourism effect is positive, since the average visitor stays longer during festival periods. In the final year of the sample the festival increased the accommodation receipts for the hotels in Stockholm and Gothenburg by 2% and 6%, respectively.

  • Balancing short-term gains and long-term success in lodging : The role of customer satisfaction and price in hotel profitability model
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Tourism Economics. - : IP Publishing Ltd.. - 1354-8166 .- 2044-0375. ; 30:4, s. 844-875
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines the relationship between revenue and profit drivers and long-term financial performance in the hotel industry based on 17-years data (2004–2020) of six US hotel chains. The analysis creates, tests, and analyzes a cross-level model that examines the complex endogenous relationships, underlying long-term financial performance of hotels. Specifically, we examine the interaction of room price (ADR) and customer satisfaction (ACSI) within a sales-volume-driver framework that impacts financial performance through profitability, measured at both the operating and accounting levels. This study seeks to advance our understanding of these relationships, their characteristics, and their implications for long-term financial performance in the hotel industry. The findings reveal that customer satisfaction is more important than price in achieving long-term financial success in the hotel industry, whereas room nights sold is significant positive driver of all performance levels.

  • Securing benefits for local communities from international visitors to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Tourism Economics. - : Sage Publications. - 1354-8166 .- 2044-0375. ; 23:8, s. 1553-1567
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article estimates the visitation demand function for Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (KTP) in order to determine the scope for raising fees charged to international tourists in order to fund revenue-sharing schemes for local communities. International and Southern African Development Community tourists account for approximately 25% and 2% of the total number of visitors to South African national parks, with domestic visitors making up the remaining portion. Although small, the South African international tourism market is mature and accounts for a disproportionately large share (around 42%) of net revenue. To estimate visitation demand at the KTP and three other national parks, random effects Tobit Model was used. Using the estimated elasticities, the revenue-maximizing daily conservation fee was computed to be R1 131.94 (US$144.20) for KTP, which can be compared with the R180 (US$22.93) currently charged. Furthermore, the study also demonstrated that there is a possibility of raising fees at the other three parks. Sharing conservation revenue with communities surrounding parks could demonstrate the link between ecotourism and local communities’ economic development and promote a positive view of land restitution involving national parks.

  • The determination of park fees in support of benefit sharing in Southern Africa
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Tourism Economics. - : Sage Publications. - 1354-8166 .- 2044-0375. ; 23:6, s. 1165-1183
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sharing conservation revenue with communities surrounding parks could demonstrate the link between ecotourism and local communities' economic development, promote a positive view of land restitution involving parks, help address skewed distribution of income in the vicinity of parks and act as an incentive for local communities to participate in conservation even more. This article estimates the visitation demand function for Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (KTP) in order to determine the appropriate conservation fee to charge visitors to maximize park revenue. The data were generated from contingent behaviour experiments on South African residents at KTP and three other parks deemed as either substitutes or complements for visitors to KTP. Our results suggest that there is sheer underselling of the recreational opportunity at KTP, which implies that there is room for generating extra revenue to support benefit sharing arrangements with the local communities. The conservation fees at KTP can increase by as much as 115%, thereby almost doubling current revenue after accounting for the drop in visitation which will be triggered by the increase

  • Income elasticity of overnight stays over seven decades
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Tourism Economics. - : Sage Publications. - 1354-8166 .- 2044-0375. ; 24:8, s. 1015-1028
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article provides new evidence on the stability of the long-run income elasticity of tourism and travel demand by use of the recently developed smooth time-varying cointegration regression model. The estimations control for relative purchasing power parity of the source country and make use of a specific country dataset where domestic and foreign overnight stays are available over a longer period of time (Switzerland, 1934–2015). Results show that the income elasticity of foreign overnight stays peaks at approximately two in the early 1960s, drops to around one in the early 1980s and from then on remains stable until the end of the sample. Domestic income elasticity reaches its highest levels in the 1930s, then steadily falls towards one in the mid-1960s, and therefrom remains stable until 2015. Different phases in the tourism area life cycle might be a major explanatory factor for variation in income elasticities over time. © The Author(s) 2018.

  • The declining dependence of ski lift operators on natural snow conditions
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Tourism Economics. - : Sage Publications. - 1354-8166 .- 2044-0375. ; 24:6, s. 662-676
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study tests for a structural shift in the relationship between revenues of ski lift operators and natural snow conditions. The analysis is based on time series data for the Swedish ski lift industry spanning from 1980 to 2017. Since 1970, snow depth in winter sport destinations has decreased markedly by about 5 cm per decade. Estimations based on the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model show that revenues (in constant prices) of ski lift operators are significantly positively related to natural snow conditions, given the impact of relative prices and real GDP. However, ARDL estimations with rolling windows reveal that the sensitivity of revenues from ski lift ticket sales to variations in snow depth is declining over time. For the subsamples starting at the end of 1980s onward, revenues no longer significantly depend on natural snow depth. This is likely due to the implementation of adaptation measures such as investments in snowmaking facilities. © 2018, The Author(s) 2018.

  • Uneven domestic tourism demand in times of pandemic
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Tourism Economics. - : Sage Publications. - 1354-8166 .- 2044-0375. ; 29:3, s. 596-611
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates the short-run impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the number of domestic overnight stays at the regional level in the summer season 2020. Official data for 65 regions in four countries are used for the analysis (Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany and Switzerland). Dynamic panel data models are employed to estimate a tourism demand equation (real GDP and price fluctuations) augmented by average temperatures. Estimation results reveal that domestic overnight stays evolve unevenly in the first summer after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The short-run effects show that the number of domestic overnight stays in densely populated regions decreases by 27% in July as well as in August 2020, in comparison with the same months in previous years, ceteris paribus. To the contrary, there is a surge of 27 and 10%, respectively, for sparsely populated areas in the same months. JEL: Z3, R11 and R12.
