  • Impact of IT procurement on the quality of the maintenance process : results from a study in Swedish industry
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Quality in Maintenance Engineering. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1355-2511 .- 1758-7832. ; 18:2, s. 196-215
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – IT investments in maintenance are of strategic importance, but it is hard to fit the IT systems to the business demands. One possible reason could be inadequate planning and execution of the procurement. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the IT procurement process within maintenance, and its impact on the quality of the maintenance process.Design/methodology/approach – The study is performed as a web-based questionnaire survey addressing maintenance managers in Swedish industry followed by five additional interviews.Findings – The decision to purchase IT is, to high extent, a maintenance internal matter and the purchases are often run in project form involving several working areas and the decision making is commonly based on the purchaser's own experience. The involvement of future users is frequent. Maintenance IT investments are seen as connected to real needs and beneficial for the maintenance.Practical implications – Highlighting the current practices within procurement helps practitioners to understand the process and thereby better prepare the purchasing of technology.Research limitations/implications – Systematic methods for the procurement of IT are used to a low extent, which implies a need for practical and easy tools within the area. In addition, the economic importance of IT investments should be further studied and tools for assessing the impact of the procurement should be developed.Originality/value – Papers dealing with maintenance IT procurement are scarce and do not cover the full procurement process, and no empirical studies within the area have been found.

  • Enhancing the usability of maintenance data management systems
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Quality in Maintenance Engineering. - 1355-2511 .- 1758-7832. ; 20:3, s. 290-303
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore and study the aspects of usability related to eMaintenance solutions. The study aims to expand the domain of eMaintenance by increasing the usefulness of the computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) through improved usability.Design/methodology/approach – The paper opted for an exploratory study using interviews, one expert focus group discussion, and observations.Findings – The paper provides insights on specific usability characteristics that can be adapted to eMaintenance solutions for industrial usage, e.g. aviation and process industry. The findings show that the current implementations of eMaintenance solutions in CMMS, in many cases, suffer from an insufficient level of usability. This has led to usability issues resulting in errors and mistakes. The result is a call for a more user-based focus, in which, the system needs to be easily understood, easily navigated, containing the necessary information to conduct maintenance tasks, tracking of the work conducted and who was involved, and the system needs to be compatible with other systems so that necessary information can be accessed via the CMMS.Research limitations/implications – Because of the chosen research approach, the research results may lack generalizability. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to test the proposed propositions further.Practical implications – The paper includes implications for the development of a CMMS, which could have positive effects for maintenance tasks.Originality/value – This paper fulfills an identified need to study how CMMS actually fulfill the task they are designed to do.

  • On aircraft scheduled maintenance program development
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Quality in Maintenance Engineering. - : Emerald. - 1355-2511 .- 1758-7832. ; 16:3, s. 229-255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present issues and challenges of scheduled maintenance task development within the maintenance review board (MRB) process, and to find potential areas of improvement in the application of the MSG-3 methodology for aircraft systems. Design/methodology/approach – The issues and challenges as well as potential areas of improvement have been identified through a constructive review that consists of two parts. The first part is a benchmarking between the Maintenance Steering Group (MSG-3) methodology and other established and documented versions of reliability-centred maintenance (RCM). This benchmarking focuses on the MSG-3 methodology and compares it with some RCM standards to identify differences and thereby find ways to facilitate the application of MSG-3. The second part includes a discussion about methodologies and tools that can support different steps of the MSG-3 methodology within the framework of the MRB process. Findings – The MSG-3 methodology is closely related to the RCM methodology, in which the anticipated consequences of failure are considered for risk evaluation. However, MSG-3 considers neither environmental effects of failures nor operational consequences of hidden failures. Furthermore, in MSG-3, the operational check (failure-finding inspection) is given priority before all other tasks, whereas in RCM it is considered as a default action, where there is no other applicable and effective option. While RCM allows cost-effectiveness analysis for all failures that have no safety consequences, MSG-3 just allows it for failures with economic consequences. A maintenance program that is established through the MRB process fulfils the requirements of continuous airworthiness, but there is no foundation to claim that it is the optimal or the most effective program from an operator’s point-of-view. The major challenge when striving to achieve a more effective maintenance program within the MRB process is to acquire supporting methodologies and tools for adequate risk analysis, for optimal interval assignments, and for selection of the most effective maintenance task. Originality/value – The paper presents a critical review of existing aircraft scheduled maintenance program development methodologies, and demonstrates the differences between MSG-3 and other RCM methodologies.

  • Life cycle cost analysis of the ventilation system in Stockholm's road tunnels
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Quality in Maintenance Engineering. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1355-2511 .- 1758-7832. ; 24:3, s. 358-375
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThis study developed a practical economic replacement decision model to identify the economic lifetime of the ventilation system used by Trafikverket in its Stockholm tunnels.Design/methodology/approachThe proposed data driven optimisation model considers operating and maintenance costs, purchase price and system resale value for a ventilation system consisting of 121 fans. The study identified data quality problems in Trafikverket’s MAXIMO database.FindingsIt found the absolute economic replacement time (ERT) of the ventilation system is 108 months but for a range of 100 to 120 months, the total cost remains almost constant. Sensitivity and regression analysis showed the operating cost has the largest impact on the ERT.Originality/valueThe results are promising; the company has the possibility of significantly reducing the LCC of the ventilation system by optimising its lifetime. In addition, the proposed model can be used for other systems with repairable components, making it applicable, useful, and implementable within Trafikverket more generally.

  • Downtime analysis of drilling machines and suggestions for improvements
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Quality in Maintenance Engineering. - 1355-2511 .- 1758-7832. ; 20:4, s. 306-332
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to analyse and compare the downtime of four drilling machines used in two underground mines in Sweden. The downtime of these machines was compared to show what problems affect downtime and which strategies should be applied to reduce it.Design/methodology/approach– The study collects failure data from a two-year period for four drilling machines and performs reliability analysis. It also performs downtime analysis utilising a log-log diagram with a confidence interval.Findings– There are notable differences in the downtime of most of the studied components for all machines. The hoses and feeder have relatively high downtime. Depending on their downtime, the significant components can be ranked in three groups. The downtime of the studied components is due to reliability problems. The study suggests the need to improve the reliability of critical components to reduce the downtime of drilling machines.Originality/value– The method of analysing the downtime, identifying dominant factors and the interval estimation for the downtime, has never been studied on drilling machines. The research proposed in this paper provides a general method to link downtime analysis with potential component improvement. To increase the statistical accuracy; four case studies was performed in two different mines with completely different working environment and ore properties. Using the above method showed which components need to be improved and suggestions for improvement was proposed and will be implemented accordingly.

  • A Conceptual Model for Fault Detection and Decision Making for Rolling Element Bearings in Paper Mills
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Quality in Maintenance Engineering. - : Emerald. - 1355-2511 .- 1758-7832. ; 7:3, s. 192-206
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rolling element bearing failures in paper mill machines are considered in relation to their critical role in the machine function. The use of expensive, sophisticated and highly automated equipment and machines and the intention to achieve higher quality products, longer machine life, higher machinery effectiveness and safer operating processes were the main driving force motivating efforts to improve maintenance concept during the last 50 years. In this paper, a conceptual model that integrates the available condition information, the deterministic models used in condition monitoring based upon mechanical theory and the probabilistic models used in the area of operational research is developed and its applicability is discussed. This models covers fault detection of a mechanical component such as a rolling element bearing, prediction of its vibration level in the near future, assessment of the probability of failure of a component over a finite period of time of interest.

  • Economic criteria to select a cost-effective maintenance policy
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Journal of Quality in Maintenance Engineering. - : Emerald. - 1355-2511 .- 1758-7832. ; 5:3, s. 236-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The reputation of an organisation is often built through hard work on improving quality, reliability, delivery time and price. In this paper a graphical method for the selection of a cost-effective monitoring technique is suggested. This graphical method is also used to select the most cost-effective replacement vibration level, when a vibration-based maintenance is implemented, i.e. when the available data are mainly condition-based replacement. This method is based on the concept of the Total Time on Test, TTT-plot. The use of this method is explained by three examples.

  • Impact of real-time measurements of operating conditions on effectiveness and accuracy of vibration-based maintenance policy : A Case Study in Paper Mill
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of Quality in Maintenance Engineering. - : Emerald. - 1355-2511 .- 1758-7832. ; 6:4, s. 275-287
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Relevant and reliable data from the surroundings in addition to the vibration measurements are required to achieve effective diagnosis and prognosis when a vibration-based maintenance (VBM) policy is used. The main conclusion is that the variation in the machine load and speeds influences the amplitudes of rolling element bearing defect frequencies. Therefore, changes in the machine speed and load should be considered when interpreting vibration spectra. This will improve the effectiveness and accuracy of fault diagnosis and prediction of the time to maintenance action. The paper classifies stoppage times and highlights the reasons behind them. Also, it discusses the consequential economic losses incurred by unplanned stoppages. During the period covered by this study (fifty-eight days), the total stoppage time was about 76.6 days and caused appreciable economic losses of about 2,3 millions SEK.
