    • FK506-binding proteins (FKBPs) belong to the large family of peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerases, which are known to be involved in many cellular processes, such as cell signalling, protein trafficking and transcription. FKBPs associate into protein complexes, although the involvement and precise role of their foldase activity remain to be elucidated. FKBPs represent a large gene family in plants that is involved in growth and development. Disruption of genes encoding FKBPs in plants and animals has underlined the importance of this family of proteins in the regulation of cell division and differentiation.

  • Mitochondrial targeting peptides in plants

    • Proteins function at distinct sites in the cell, yet most are primarily synthesized in the cytosol and must therefore be transported intracellularly to their final destination. Mitochondrial targeting peptides are localized at the N-terminus of the precursor proteins and most are cleaved off after import into mitochondria. Cleavage is catalysed by the general mitochondrial processing peptidase, which, in plants, is integrated into the bc1 complex of the respiratory chain. This peptidase recognizes the cleavage sites of nearly 1000 precursor proteins that have no sequence similarity.

    • Although mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signal transduction cascades are known regulators of various aspects of plant biology, our knowledge of these systems has been largely restricted to a small subset of the MAPKs. However, global analyses are now revealing that many more of these kinases are probably engaged in modulating developmental and fitness adaptation processes in the plant kingdom. In this review, we show how these new findings are beginning to define the overall architecture of plant MAPK signaling, with a particular focus on the interplay between the terminal MPKs and their activators, inactivators and cellular targets.

  • The Evolution of HD2 Proteins in Green Plants

    • In eukaryotes, protein deacetylation is carried out by two well-conserved his tone deacetylase (HDAC) families: RPD3/HDA1 and SIR2. Intriguingly, model plants such as Arabidopsis express an additional plant-specific HDAC family, termed type-2 HDACs (HD2s). Transcriptomic analyses from more than 1300 green plants generated by the 1000 plants (1KP) consortium showed that HD2s appeared early in green plant evolution, the first members being detected in several streptophyte green alga. The HD2 family has expanded via several rounds of successive duplication; members are expressed in all major green plant clades. Interestingly, angiosperm species express new HD2 genes devoid of a zinc-finger domain, one of the main structural features of HD2s. These variants may have been associated with the origin and/or the biology of the ovule/seed.

  • Do Plants Eavesdrop on Floral Scent Signals?

    • Plants emit a diverse array of volatile organic compounds that can function as cues to other plants. Plants can use volatiles emitted by neighbors to gain information about their environment, and respond by adjusting their phenotype. Less is known about whether the many different volatile signals that plants emit are all equally likely to function as cues to other plants. We review evidence for the function of floral volatile signals and conclude that plants are as likely to perceive and respond to floral volatiles as to other, better-studied volatiles. We propose that eavesdropping on floral volatile cues is particularly likely to be adaptive because plants can respond to these cues by adjusting traits that directly affect pollination and mating.

    • Unlike animals, whose body plans are set during embryo development, plants maintain the ability to initiate new organs throughout their life cycle. Auxin is a key regulator of almost all aspects of plant development, including morphogenesis and adaptive responses. Cellular auxin concentrations influence whether a cell will divide, grow, or differentiate, thereby contributing to organ formation, growth, and ultimately plant shape. Auxin gradients are established and maintained by a tightly regulated interplay between metabolism, signalling, and transport. Auxin is synthesised, stored, and inactivated by a multitude of parallel pathways that are all tightly regulated. Here we summarise the remarkable progress that has been achieved in identifying some key components of these pathways and the genetic complexity underlying their precise regulation.

  • Genomic selection: genome-wide prediction in plant improvement

    • Association analysis is used to measure relations between markers and quantitative trait loci (QTL). Their estimation ignores genes with small effects that trigger underpinning quantitative traits. By contrast, genomewide selection estimates marker effects across the whole genome on the target population based on a prediction model developed in the training population (TP). Whole-genome prediction models estimate all marker effects in all loci and capture small QTL effects. Here, we review several genomic selection (GS) models with respect to both the prediction accuracy and genetic gain from selection. Phenotypic selection or markerassisted breeding protocols can be replaced by selection, based on whole-genome predictions in which phenotyping updates the model to build up the prediction accuracy.

    • The acquisition and integration of intracellular organelles, such as mitochondria and plastids, were important steps in the emergence of complex multicellular life. Although the outer membranes of these organelles have lost many of the functions of their free-living bacterial ancestor, others were acquired during organellogenesis. To date, the biological roles of these proteins have not been systematically characterized. In this review, we discuss the evolutionary origins and functions of outer membrane mitochondria! (OMM) proteins in Arabidopsis thaliana. Our analysis, using phylogenetic inference, indicates that several OMM proteins either acquired novel functional roles or were recruited from other subcellular localizations during evolution in Arabidopsis. These observations suggest the existence of novel communication routes and functions between organelles within plant cells.

    • The need to reduce pollinator exposure to harmful pesticides has led to calls to expedite the adoption of integrated pest management (IPM). We make the case that IPM is not explicitly 'pollinator friendly', but rather must be adapted to reduce impacts on pollinators and to facilitate synergies between crop pollination and pest control practices and ecosystem services. To reconcile these diverse needs, we introduce a systematic framework for 'integrated pest and pollinator management' (IPPM). We also highlight novel tools to unify monitoring and economic decision-making processes for IPPM and outline key policy actions and knowledge gaps. We propose that IPPM is needed to promote more coordinated, ecosystem-based strategies for sustainable food production, against the backdrop of increasing pesticide regulation and pollinator dependency in agriculture.
