  • Perceptions of death among children in Sweden
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Children's Spirituality. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1364-436X .- 1469-8455. ; 24:4, s. 415-433
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article discusses children?s thoughts about death. Research was carried out in two elementary schools in Sweden among 40 children between 6 and 9 years of age, data were collected through text reading, movie viewing and dialogues with children. The main results reveal child-specific thoughts about the end of life, i.e., ideas children construe on their own. The findings also show society- and time-specific thoughts that children take from their societal and cultural context. The article proposes an integrative approach between these two: it is only when the categories of child-specific and society- and time-specific thoughts are combined that we get a fair picture of children?s perceptions of death. The main finding is that children form ideas of their own; they are not completely under the influence of their societal and cultural context. Children take over ideas from their surrounding society but they also express ideas produced by themselves.

  • Where to and why? Children on meaning and value in a new materiality perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Children's Spirituality. - London : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1364-436X .- 1469-8455. ; 26:1-2, s. 44-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present article is to discuss what children regard as important in life and how they view the purpose of life. We proceed from a new materiality perspective. The results are based on a study conducted in Sweden among 40 6- to 9-year-old children in two different classes in two elementary schools. A qualitative data-collection method was used involving text reading and movie viewing. In the present article, we begin with a theoretical discussion of the new materiality perspective before presenting our results. The findings show that children perceive togetherness, kindness, fairness and freedom as basic values for their own part and that they consider wealth and family to be basic societal values. There is a value differentiation going on in children’s thinking, a result of which is that some values step out as basic values for children. A map of values is construed that aims to explicate children’s value orientation.

  • Young people's experiences of religious socialisation in Sweden and Finland
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Children's Spirituality. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1364-436X .- 1469-8455. ; 29:1, s. 1-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The religious landscape in the Nordic countries has changed in recent decades. This article looks at what this means from the perspective of the religious socialisation experiences of Finnish and Swedish youth. Research has shown that the views and values of parents, family, friends, the youth culture and those that are prevalent in school and society as a whole are important for young people's self-development. The intergenerational socialisation of religious traditions and values has diminished as societies have become more secularised. As this topic is scarcely researched, new studies are needed also on young people's perspectives. This article aims to fill the research gap by investigating the kind of impact that parents, school and friends have on young people's religious socialisation.

  • Spirituality and mental health among children and youth - a Swedish point of view
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Children's Spirituality. - 1364-436X .- 1469-8455. ; 21:3-4, s. 216-229
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is growing evidence that spirituality and spiritual development are important for the health and mental well-being of children and youth. In individualistic and secularised countries, resources and language adequate for securing this right to spirituality is shrinking. Sweden is regarded as one of the most secularised and individualised countries in the world, and the article argues that Sweden could be described as ‘spiritual illiterate’. Increasing mental ill-health among youth is discussed in relation to a heightened privatisation of religion, ‘state individualism’, and a growing performance culture. It is argued that strong cultural ideals like independence and self-realisation repress children’s and youth’s spirituality and spiritual development. Further research is called for in order to explore the complex interplay between individualisation, spirituality and mental ill-health among children and youth in today’s Sweden.
