  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Medieval Sermon Studies. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1366-0691 .- 1749-6276. ; 60:1, s. 5-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article comprises an introduction to and an edition and translation of an Old Swedish sermon fragment found in the Hannaas Collection at the Ethno-Folkloristic Archive, University of Bergen, Norway (Hannaas 66). This previously unpublished paper fragment is one of the missing parts of the Old Swedish Homily Book (known as Svensk järteckens postilla), dating from the second half of the fifteenth century and now housed at the Royal Library in Stockholm, Sweden (Cod. Holm. A 111). The text in Hannaas 66 comprises a sermon for the 8th Sunday after Trinity based on Matthew 7. 15–16 and includes a miracle exemplum that illustrates the importance of acting justly and following the will of God.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Medieval Sermon Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1366-0691 .- 1749-6276. ; 63:1, s. 6-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents and discusses a parchment fragment in the Royal Library in Copenhagen (Fragment Collection, no. 3230), a single folio of a now lost manuscript. It contains a miracle tale about a bishop murderer, a story that can also be found in the famous edifying work Consolation of the Soul. The medieval Danish translation of Consolation of the Soul – Sjælens trøst – is extant in two separate pieces (Ups. C 509 and Holm. A 109) of what was once a single manuscript. The two separate pieces do not, however, make a whole and part of the Sjælens trøst manuscript is missing. However, the Copenhagen fragment is not part of this missing piece. In fact, it belongs to an entirely different text tradition – Étienne de Bourbon’s Tractatus de diversis materiis praedicabilibus – and is a remnant of a translation of (part of) this collection of exempla. As such, it is a significant addition to our knowledge of medieval preaching in Denmark and the use of vernacular translations of continental, Latin didactic material in exempla.

  • A Vadstena Preacher Using 'Cut and Paste'
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Medieval Sermon Studies. - Hull : Maney Publishing. - 1366-0691. ; 55, s. 45-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Johannes Borquardi was a priest-brother at Vadstena Abbey from 1428 until his death in 1447. He was a renowned preacher and has left three extant volumes of sermons. At the end of many of his sermons, he writes suggestions for yet another sermon on the same theme or for the same day. There are some 60 such short texts, some mentioning only one or two suitable sources, others listing many books; sometimes they even give a Vadstena shelf-mark. These texts are invaluable for our knowledge of the Abbey library in many aspects. In some cases, we can check how Johannes himself used his own suggestions, since we also have his next product for the same feast. In this paper, I have studied how Johannes used one of his 'endnotes' to compose a sermon for St Matthias by cribbing from Peregrinus de Oppeln and Guilelmus Peraldus. I hope to show just how skilfully he uses his sources and how elegantly he pastes in his quotations, so that the sermon becomes a new, consistent and homogeneous text.
