  • Held together by the bark : performance measurement and management as propagated by industry analysts
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Performance Management. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1368-4892 .- 1741-5039. ; 15:3, s. 192-206
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to explore what is propagated as performance measurement and management (PMM) by industry analysts. The rationale for targeting industry analysts is that this group constitutes a previously largely overlooked actor within the supply of management ideas. The study utilises empirical material in the form of proprietary reports marketed and sold by one of the largest industry analyst firms, through a dual analysis of history and content. As the findings show, there is a rich plethora of PMM incarnations stemming from one particular industry analyst report. Utilising rhetorical analysis, this piece of research is found to be lacking in sound argumentation opening up for significant doubts in terms of the validity of the subsequent incarnations. These findings are discussed in terms of implications for both research and practice.

  • The strategic management of operations system performance
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Performance Management. - 1368-4892 .- 1741-5039. ; 10:1, s. 108-132
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The enterprises' operations systems environments, characterised by their complexity and dynamics, are challenging the strategic management models. This paper presents the development of a theoretical framework, organised as a set of design recommendations to guide the performance measurement system capabilities development. The developed theoretical construction is based on the literature review. A framework is constructed to represent the relationships between roles, capabilities and design recommendations of a performance measurement system. The measurement system is studied in the context of an Operations Strategic Management System (OSMS) and three different levels of analysis are used to organise the findings of this study. The results are presented in tables that identify the main roles that the measurement system should perform; establish the relationships between roles and required capabilities and generate a list of design recommendations. Based on the mediating function of the required organisational capabilities, the causal links are identified and the framework is generated.

  • Do Customers Improve New Product Development Efficiency? : Revealing the Impact of Manufacturing-Based Absorptive Capacity
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Performance Management. - 1368-4892 .- 1741-5039. ; 14:2, s. 149-165
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to collaborate with customers in new product development efficiently, companies need to maintain some inherent competence that allows them to both understand the external party’s processes and absorb external knowledge. The aim of this study was to operationalise absorptive capacity for manufacturing and examine its impact on new product development efficiency. A large scale survey was sent out to Swedish manufacturing companies and the data was analysed using hierarchical regression. The results show that it is not manufacturing competence per se that increases new product development (NPD) efficiency, but rather how the competence is leveraged through various integration mechanisms. The results indicate that the indirect ability to improve NPD efficiency should also be taken into account when a firm is deciding whether to invest in manufacturing or not.

  • Sustainable global purchasing : assessing the relative impact of sustainability goals and programs
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Performance Management. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1368-4892 .- 1741-5039. ; 19:2, s. 169-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Global purchasing and offshoring are established strategic means for lowering costs and improving competitiveness. However, firms purchasing globally have also been accused of committing, supporting or just turning a blind eye to a number of environmental and social misdemeanours, such as disregard for environmental regulation, poor working conditions and corruption. The purpose of this paper is to provide quantitative evidence, based on a large scale survey, on how global purchasing actually impacts sustainability performance. The paper finds that there are no significant differences in sustainability performance between firms purchasing globally and firms purchasing regionally. However, firms purchasing globally are significantly more likely to fulfil their sustainability goals compared to firms purchasing regionally. Moreover, only firms that purchase globally show a significant impact of sustainability programmes on supplier sustainability compliance. Global purchasing can thus aid in social and environmental responsibility if it is accompanied by ambitious sustainability targets and sustainability programmes.
