  • On the Potential of Norm-Governed Behavior in Different Categories of Artificial Societies
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Computational and mathematical organization theory. - 1381-298X .- 1572-9346. ; 12:2-3, s. 169-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on a classification of artificial societies and the identification of four different types of stakeholders in such societies, we investigate the potential of norm-governed behavior in different types of artificial societies. The basis of the analysis is the preferences of the stakeholders and how they influence the state of the society. A general conclusion drawn is that the more open a society is the more it has to rely on agent owners and designers to achieve norm-governed behavior, whereas in more closed societies the environment designers and owners may control the degree of norm-governed behavior.

  • Reputation, inequality and meeting techniques : visualising user hierarchy to support collaboration
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Computational and mathematical organization theory. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1381-298X .- 1572-9346. ; 20:2, s. 155-175
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Equality within groups is ordinarily taken for granted when technology for e-democracy is conceived and developed. However, inequality in online communication is just as common as in other social contexts. Therefore, we have developed a groupware with the express purpose of illuminating imbalance of power. Inequalities are measured and made visible to users of the system, and they change dynamically as actions are taken by users. The system is based on democratic meeting techniques and is reminiscent of a strategy game based on social media. Each participant’s score within the game is dynamically calculated and reflects that user’s activity, others’ reactions to that activity and reactions to others’ activities. The calculations and weighing mechanisms are open to inspection and change by the users, and hierarchical roles reflecting game levels may be attached to system rights belonging to individual users and user groups. The prototype we present stems from the question of how to conceive of groupware based on diversity and is the result of combining social theory with algorithms for modelling and visualising user hierarchy and status. Empirical user tests suggest improvements to the prototype’s interface, which will be implemented and further evaluated by embedding the algorithms in a system for e-participation.

  • The underlying geometry of organizational dynamics : similarity-based social space and labor flow network communities
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Computational and mathematical organization theory. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1381-298X .- 1572-9346. ; 24:3, s. 378-400
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we use Swedish longitudinal register data to study the effect that similarity in organizational properties has on the interaction between organizations. We map out the social space of large organizations in the Stockholm Region and the interplay between social distance and the network communities of employee movements between organizations. We firstly use homogeneity analysis to describe the dynamics of organizations in terms of the time evolution of their similarity. Our results show that most categorical variables are quite stable over time. Organizations linked through employee movement edges have a lower average distance in social space than non-linked organizations. Secondly, we look at network community dynamics in social space. Employee flows between organizations in different communities exhibit a so-called gravity law from spatial statistics, decaying more slowly than observed geographical networks, meaning that employees reach out regions of social space further than of physical space. Finally, the rate of change of distance in homogeneity space exhibits a statistical distribution similar to the ones found in various other growth processes in natural and man-made systems.

  • Explaining the influence of time budget pressure on audit quality in Sweden
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT & GOVERNANCE. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1385-3457 .- 1572-963X. ; 21:2, s. 331-350
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is aimed at explaining how time budget pressure influences audit quality in the Swedish context. A hypothesis is deduced and tested through a survey sent to Swedish auditors. The Swedish context provides a special setting since audit firms and auditors have been facing new pressures due, for example, to the removal of statutory audits for a majority of the companies in Sweden. The findings show that time budget pressure lowers the quality of audits performed by Swedish auditors, but it is not the only explanation. Audit quality is also related to other factors such as gender, position, experience, number of clients, local office size and audit firm. Thus, the model is useful for explaining the factors influencing audit quality and could be used and expanded in future studies. The study also has practical implications showing that when trading-off between audit efforts and available resources and setting time budgets for each audit assignment, audit firms should also consider the personal characteristics of the auditors.

  • Social Background and Becoming a Parent in Sweden : A Register-Based Study of the Effect of Social Background on Childbearing in Sweden
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Population. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0168-6577 .- 1572-9885. ; 31:4, s. 417-444
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, I introduce three measures of social background, namely occupational class, social status, and parental education, into fertility research. The objective is to examine whether these dimensions of social background affect entry into parenthood even after controlling for several potential pathways. I estimate event history models on first birth rates using data, which include all Swedes born in 1960. The results show that each of the three dimensions of social background has a clear bivariate association with the risk of becoming a parent, both for men and for women. Parental education has the strongest effect of class and status background, and the latter two do not affect the entry into fatherhood when the effects of all dimensions of social background are estimated simultaneously. Much of the remaining association between social background and fertility persists when controlling for own educational history, mother's age at first birth, and father's mean incomes. The results also show that higher social background leads to postponement of childbearing but that it has no effect on the final likelihood of ever become a parent. The influence of social background on fertility is stronger for women than for men.
