  • Teaching about Electronic Records in an Online Learning Environment
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Archival Science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1389-0166 .- 1573-7500 .- 1573-7519. ; 5:2-4, s. 379-389
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The author, a senior lecturer at Edith Cowan University in Australia, discusses the literature used to teach macroappraisal of electronic records through distance education techniques within an environment rooted in the Australian records continuum. In this context, students are given a sound grounding in systems analysis and design, as well as functional appraisal and the importance of metadata. A key teaching element is the International Standards Organization’s Information and Documentation – Records Management (ISO 15489), which she demonstrates has strong parallels to the principles of systems analysis and design.

  • Teaching to trust: How a virtual archives and preservation curriculum laboratory creates a global education community?
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Archival Science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1389-0166 .- 1573-7500 .- 1573-7519. ; 11:3-4, s. 349-372
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Building virtual archives and preservation curriculum laboratories centered around born-digital and digitized records is a collaborative project currently underway between Simmons College (US) and Mid-Sweden University. In this virtual environment, issues of trust are central to the process, in terms of the both archival curriculum and the collaborative education process itself. The article describes the project, the collaboration, and offers a range of scenarios that demonstrate how the laboratories work within curriculum.

  • Participatory archive : towards decentralised curation, radical user orientation, and broader contextualisation of records management
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Archival Science. - Amsterdam : Springer Netherlands. - 1389-0166 .- 1573-7500 .- 1573-7519. ; 8:1, s. 15-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The user perspective and user studies have received noticeably little practical attention in archives and archival science. The purpose of this article is to address the issues of communication and user participation in archival contexts. Two action research projects based digital archives are discussed. The insights gained during the research and development work are used to formulate a new approach to a participatory archive. In spite of the historical nature of the archives discussed, the suggested ways of interacting with an archives are not specific to historical records. The fundamental characteristics of the proposed approach are decentralised curation, radical user orientation, and contextualisation of both records and the entire archival process.

  • Documentation practices and recordkeeping : A matter of trust or distrust?
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Archival Science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1389-0166 .- 1573-7500 .- 1573-7519. ; 11:3-4, s. 277-291
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Records are more and more important as instruments of trust, for instance to ascertain accouworthiness in relation to records, and to analyze the relation between the increasing reliance on formal documentation in contemporary organizations and the requirements on records and recordkeeping systems that has been advanced recent years. It can be argued that the effort to enhance trustworthiness actually is a manifestation of diminishing trust. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

  • Open research data, an archival challenge?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Archival Science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1389-0166 .- 1573-7500. ; 20, s. 279-302
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish government has decided that all research results in the form of research data and scientific publications financed with public funds should be openly accessible as far as possible. The question is whether the responsible actors and if the universities are ready to implement the change. The significance of open access has amplified in Sweden. Earlier research has brought to light that the collection and preservation of research data are often surrounded by ambiguous rules and lack a comprehensive structure. For example, archiving is not given enough consideration in connection to research projects and researchers often tend to save their material on platforms that are not persistent over time. This article is based upon a qualitative research approach where 15 semi-structured interviews have been used as primarily data sources to investigate the implementation of open access of research data and scientific publications. The article investigated how Swedish universities and public authorities were working with archiving and implementation of open research data and their opinions on open access. The results displayed a lack of coordination, resources and infrastructure but also that common agreed nomenclature were missing. The management of research data was not part of an overall recordkeeping strategy. One explanation could be differences in the information culture among researchers and archivists. Social sciences theory has been combined with archival theory in order to explain the reasons to this. These have been put in relation to the principles of the open data directive.

  • Records of neglect : the significance of archives in redress processes
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Archival Science. - : Springer Nature. - 1389-0166 .- 1573-7500.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2005, a Swedish television documentary that revealed gross misconduct and abuse in Swedish children’s homes led to a number of inquiries that culminated with the passing of the Redress Act. This act entitled everyone that had suffered from abuse in out-of-home care to 250,000 Swedish crowns (close to 25,000 Euros). However, only 42 percent of the Swedish claimants were granted the compensation, a very low number in international comparison. The starting point of this study is this—in many accounts failed—redress process. Why did Sweden, self-appointed moral superpower, produce such deviating results? This question is addressed by an inquiry into the Swedish scheme of redress, focusing on the role of archives and recordkeeping with particular focus on the concepts of total archives and politics of regret. This paper argues that it was impossible for the Swedish Board of Redress to make satisfactory assessments of redress claims, given the set criteria and the archival material on which they were required to base their decisions, and that it is a futile task to base the writing of individual life stories on official documentation.

  • Creating value of the past through negotiations in the present : balancing professional authority with influence of participants
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Archival Science. - : SPRINGER. - 1389-0166 .- 1573-7500. ; 20, s. 327-345
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates how an online forum for a participatory archive project can offer a platform for controlled power-sharing between archivists and participants. Additionally, it explains how participants affect the processes, structures, and end usability of the information resource they are invited to create, with a focus on representability and the ethical responsibility of archivists. This study takes its point of departure in a participatory online transcription project: Begravelser 1861-1912. The influence of participants is studied through observation of the communication between archivists and transcribers in an online discussion forum. Theoretical concepts of maximalist and minimalist participation are used to contextualize levels of user influence. The study uses a framework inspired by Community-based participatory research (CBPR) to analyze the communication. The results show how participants used the forum to gain influence in the project, and how several elements of CBPR-shared influence, mutual development, and mutual use-were manifested in the forum. The conclusion is that using a CBPR approach in participatory projects can produce synergetic effects of increased knowledge and enhanced archival responsibility in conjunction with sustainable participatory engagement.

  • Search, save and share: family historians’ engagement practices with digital platforms
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Archival Science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1389-0166 .- 1573-7500. ; 23, s. 187-206
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alongside established heritage institutions, family historians are central figures in the ecosystem of digital heritage, both as contributors to and users of digitized historical sources. With that in mind, this research aims for a wide examination of family historians’ engagement with the broader selection of available digital platforms, providing knowledge about how and why they choose to use one platform over another. This knowledge is important for the future development of sustainable digital platforms in the heritage sector. With a large variety of digitized source providers, many with free access platforms, Denmark and Danish family historians make an excellent case for this study. Through both a questionnaire and focus group interviews, using a grounded theory approach, this study has developed a model of engagement with digital platforms, referred to as a buffet model. This model illustrates how family historians pick and choose from a selection of digital platforms throughout their search and management of information as well as their community interaction. Moreover, through the lens of the Serious Leisure Perspective we find that family history is often a life-long leisure activity and family historians’ usage of digital platforms support this finding.
