    • The assertion of identity and power via computer-mediated communication in the context of distance or web-based learning presents challenges to both teachers and students. When regular, face-to-face classroom interaction is replaced by online chat or group discussion forums, participants must avail themselves of new techniques and tactics for contributing to and furthering interaction, discussion, and learning. During student-only chat sessions, the absence of teacher-led, face-to-face classroom activities requires the students to assume leadership roles and responsibilities normally associated with the teacher. This situation raises the questions of who teaches and who learns; how students discursively negotiate power roles; and whether power emerges as a function of displayed expertise and knowledge or rather the use of authoritative language. This descriptive study represents an examination of a corpus of task-based discussion logs among Vietnamese students of distance learning courses in English linguistics. The data reveal recurring discourse strategies for 1) negotiating the progression of the discussion sessions, 2) asserting and questioning knowledge, and 3) assuming or delegating responsibility. Power is defined ad hoc as the ability to successfully perform these strategies. The data analysis contributes to a better understanding of how working methods and materials can be tailored to students in distance learning courses, and how such students can be empowered by being afforded opportunities and effectively encouraged to assert their knowledge and authority.

    • This article describes a pilot study in which we talked with pre-school children, told them fairytales and listened to their conversation in order to describe and analyse their verbal communications. From our own previous observations we were aware of the importance of studying the development of reading and mathematics concurrently as the base of both subjects is verbal language communication. We therefore observed the verbal communication of the children while they solved problems both in and out of the mathematical context. In this pilot study we attempted to determine expressions in the children’s language that showed a connection between their primary linguistic ability and their thought processes. In examining the language used by the children in their discussions we were guided by the following questions: How did they express themselves? Which words did they use?Did they use a variety of expressions? We considered both the structure of their sentences and the logistics of their thought processes. We watched for those linguistic structures which indicated the children’s ability to “hold a clear line”. Wetherefore also observed for syntactic structures in the language, which the children used, which indicated their ability to do so. One criterion, which indicates maturity in the developmentof verbal communication is the ability to think before talking. In the study we approached the analyses of the children’s discussions so as to understand their process of problem solving so that we could better understand their thought processes in arriving at their results. The findings have been useful in helping us refine a method of data collection which we can apply to, for further research of this type.

    • This article reports on an online workshop which was held in October 2006 on the topic of contemporary web 2.0 technologies. The workshop was a part of the European project eLene-Teacher Training. The workshop was organised by two teacher educators in Sweden and 33 participants was enrolled from eight countries in Europe. The workshop took place during one week on the Internet in a blog environment. The workshop is analysed from both a pedagogical and technical perspective. The workshop is evaluated with a questionnaire, analysis of blog posts and podcasts and through reflections from the teacher educators. The result indicates that the technical aims were reached i.e. the participants learned to create podcasts and learned to blog. The pedagogical aims suffered from difficulties to discuss for example attitudes to publishing content on the Internet. Instead pedagogical issues should be raised by the participants.
