  • A high-speed data acquisition system for segmented Ge-detectors
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: 2007 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record. - : IEEE. - 1424409233 - 9781424409235 - 9781424409228 ; , s. 536-537
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When using segmented Ge-detectors for gamma ray tracking it is necessary to determine the segment pulse shapes with high accuracy. A high-speed data acquisition system with many channels, high precision and with high sampling rate is required. There are also many other applications for such a system. Our system uses high performance FPGAs (Xilinx Virtex-V [2]) to cope with the data rates delivered by the high speed ADC chosen (Atmel 2Gsps, 10 bits) and to make all the data processing onboard in real time. Each board contains four such ADCs, which can either handle four channels up to full speed, or achieve higher sampling rates with interleaving. The boards can communicate with each other over different types of high-speed communication links. Control and monitoring is implemented with embedded processors. The processed result will be transmitted over Ethernet to final storage. The project introduces many challenging issues: signal integrity, ADC performance, interfacing ADCs to the FPGA, synchronisation of ADCs across the entire system, implementing flexible processing algorithms, high speed interconnection between boards and managing the significant heat generation. This is an ongoing project with interesting potentials for the future.

  • Internals and evaluation of the miniPET-II detector module
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: 2007 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record. - 1424409233 - 9781424409235 ; , s. 2930-2932
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the architecture of the System-on-Module (SoM) developed by our group for miniPET-II, the second version of our small animal PET scanner. The paper describes the hardware and software implementation details of the SoM we realized inside the miniPET-II detector module, the embedded Linux operation system, and the the initial results of bandwidth test measurements on the assembled SoM. Detailed description is given on the interfacing of the updated miniPET IP Core to the SoM, on the efficient data transfer method that implements device-to-device DMA transfer, and on the usage of User Datagram Protocol (UDP/IP) for high speed data transfer.

  • The GSI HPGe detector scanner - A sophisticated device based on PET technique
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: 2007 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record. - : IEEE. - 1424409233 - 9781424409235 ; , s. 2213-2215
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new 3D HPGe detector scanner based on PET technique has been proposed and implemented. The scanning technology utilizes a 2D position sensitive detector array made of fibre scintillation detectors ordered in cone geometry and read out by position sensitive photomultipliers. This allows simultaneous scanning of numerous coordinate points. The third coordinate of the interaction point in the germanium volume to be scanned is obtained by measuring y-rays Compton scattered by 90° using collimated scintillation detectors. The first results of the proposed scanning technology clearly demonstrate the feasibility to obtain high quality data from a germanium detector within a reasonable time employing a moderate 1 MBq activity y source.

  • Boron-10 loaded BC523A liquid scintillator for neutron detection in the border monitoring
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: 2007 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium & Medical Imaging Conference. - : IEEE. - 1424409233 - 9781424409235 ; , s. 1389-1395
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A BC523A liquid scintillator loaded with boron-10 was tested as a detector for both fast and thermal neutrons. Pulse shape discrimination (PSD) method based on a zero-crossing principle was applied to distinguish between neutron and gamma radiation. High quantum efficiency Photonis XP5500B photomultiplier was used to enhance light detection from the scintillator. This allowed a good registration of the energy spectrum of neutron capture events on boron-10, corresponding to about 60 keVee. The applied PSD method proved to be useful for n/γ discrimination. A good resolving power of the method was achieved even without gating on neutron capture events. A comparison with a standard BC501A liquid scintillator was done to evaluate thermal neutrons detection efficiency in BC523A.
