Projectile Coulomb-Excitation with Fast Radioactive Beams

- We report a search for gamma rays emanating from Coulomb excitation of fast (30-46 MeV/u) radioactive projectiles He-8, Be-11,Be-12,Be-14 interacting with a lead target. These are clearly identified by their Doppler shift. The 320 keV 1/2(-) --> 1/2(+)gamma transition from Be-11 was observed with a cross-section of 191 +/- 26 mb which is noticeably less than expected from the known lifetime and in the perturbation limit of pure Coulomb excitation. In the other nuclei rather stringent upper limits of 0.01 to 0.2 Weisskopf units, are placed on the hypothetical transition to 1(-) states.

- High-spin states in Pb-192 were populated via the reaction Yb-173(Mg-24,5n) at a beam energy of 140 MeV, and the resulting gamma-rays were deteced using GAMMA-SPHERE. A previously observed superdeformed band in Pb-192 has been confirmed.

- We have investigated the continuous particle spectra following the beta decay of the neutron-rich nuclei that terminate the mass 6, 8, 9 and 11 isobaric chains. Strong beta transitions feeding the very top of the spectrum are found systematically. The favoured states are within a few MeV of the energy of the initial state. This phenomenon seems to be linked to the occurrence of a di-neutron structure or neutron halo in the drip-line nuclei.

- The proton-rich isotopes32Ar-35Ar represent the first sequence for which the superallowed Gamow-Teller strength is known out toZ− N=4. The results are compared with two sets of predictions from large shell-model calculations, which give systematically different quenching factors, on the average 0.54 and 0.89. Possible reasons for this are discussed. A comparison is also made with the Gamow-Teller strength of proton-rich isotopes of neighbouring elements.

The yrast band of 120Ba is extended up to spin 22 h and one tentatively assigned negative-parity side band is observed up to spin 15 h. - Excited states of Te-108 were populated in the Fe-54 + Ni-58 (270 MeV) reaction using the NORDBALL detector array equipped with charged-particle and neutron detector systems for reaction channel separation. Gamma rays belonging to the neutron deficient nucleus Te-108 were identified for the first time. On the basis of gammagamma-coincidence and angular correlation relations a level scheme was constructed with tentative spin and parity assignments. The structure of the nucleus is discussed in the framework of systematics of heavier Te nuclei.
