  • 3D pore structure characterisation of paper
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Pattern Analysis and Applications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1433-7541 .- 1433-755X. ; 13:2, s. 159-172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pore structure characterisation of paper, using automated image analysis methods, has previously been performed in two-dimensional images. Three dimensional (3D) images have become available and thereby new representations and corresponding measurements are needed for 3D pore structure characterisation. In this article, we present a new pore structure representation, the individual pore-based skeleton, and new quantitative measurements for individual pores in 3D, such as surface area, orientation, anisotropy, and size distributions. We also present measurements for network relations, like tortuosity and connectivity. The data used to illustrate the pore structure representations and corresponding measurements are high resolution X-ray microtomography volume images of a layered duplex board imaged at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). Quantification of the pore structure is exemplified and the results show that differences in pore structure between the layers in the cardboard can be characterised using the presented methods.

  • BiosecurID : A Multimodal Biometric Database
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Pattern Analysis and Applications. - New York, USA : Springer-Verlag New York. - 1433-7541 .- 1433-755X. ; 13:2, s. 235-246
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new multimodal biometric database, acquired in the framework of the BiosecurID project, is presented together with the description of the acquisition setup and protocol. The database includes eight unimodal biometric traits, namely: speech, iris, face (still images, videos of talking faces), handwritten signature and handwritten text (on-line dynamic signals, off-line scanned images), fingerprints (acquired with two different sensors), hand (palmprint, contour-geometry) and keystroking. The database comprises 400 subjects and presents features such as: realistic acquisition scenario, balanced gender and population distributions, availability of information about particular demographic groups (age, gender, handedness), acquisition of replay attacks for speech and keystroking, skilled forgeries for signatures, and compatibility with other existing databases. All these characteristics make it very useful in research and development of unimodal and multimodal biometric systems. © Springer-Verlag London Limited 2009.

  • Clustering by Adaptive Local Search with multiple search operators
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Pattern Analysis and Applications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1433-7541 .- 1433-755X. ; 3:4, s. 348-357
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Local Search (LS) has proven to be an efficient optimisation technique in clustering applications and in the minimisation of stochastic complexity of a data set. In the present paper, we propose two ways of organising LS in these contexts, the Multi-operator Local Search (MOLS) and the Adaptive Multi-Operator Local Search (AMOLS), and compare their performance to single operator (random swap) LS method and repeated GLA (Generalised Lloyd Algorithm). Both of the proposed methods use several different LS operators to solve the problem. MOLS applies the operators cyclically in the same order, whereas AMOLS adapts itself to favour the operators which manage to improve the result more frequently. We use a large database of binary vectors representing strains of bacteria belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae and a binary image as our test materials. The new techniques turn out to be very promising in these tests.
