  • Types and trends of name signs in the Swedish Sign Language community
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: SKY Journal of Linguistics. - 1456-8438 .- 1796-279X. ; 30, s. 7-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the domain of name signs (i.e., signs used as personal names) in the Swedish Sign Language (SSL) community. The data are based on responses from an online questionnaire, in which Deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing participants answered questions about the nature of their name signs. The collected questionnaire data comprise 737 name signs, distributed across five main types and 24 subtypes of name signs, following the categorization of previous work on SSL. Signs are grouped according to sociolinguistic variables such as age, gender, and identity (e.g., Deaf or hearing), as well as the relationship between name giver and named (e.g., family or friends). The results show that name signs are assigned at different ages between the groups, such that children of Deaf parents are named earlier than other groups, and that Deaf and hard of hearing individuals are normally named during their school years. It is found that the distribution of name sign types is significantly different between females and males, with females more often having signs denoting physical appearance, whereas males have signs related to personality/behavior. Furthermore, it is shown that the distribution of sign types has changed over time, with appearance signs losing ground to personality/behavior signs – most clearly for Deaf females. Finally, there is a marginally significant difference in the distribution of sign types based on whether or not the name giver was Deaf. The study is the first to investigate name signs and naming customs in the SSL community statistically – synchronically and diachronically – and one of the few to do so for any sign language.

  • The grammar-interaction interface of negative questions in Estonian
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: SKY Journal of Linguistics. - Helsinki : Suomen kielitieteellinen yhdistys. - 1456-8438 .- 1796-279X. ; 22, s. 139-173
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Grammatically negative questions have been considered tricky because out of context it is basically impossible to predict whether they are conducive of a positive or negative answer (e.g. Sadock and Zwicky 1985). Furthermore, some of them convey reverse polarity affirmations rather than ask for information (Koshik 2002). The current study looks systematically at all negative polar questions found in Estonian spoken language corpora and shows that in actual usage, they are predominantly conducive of a confirming answer. However, a confirming answer may in some cases be either in a positive or negative form. Conduciveness of a negative question as well as its linguistic format depend on the action the question implements in a conversational sequence. The paper shows that each of the five negative question formats in Estonian regularly implement different kinds of social action ranging from challenging and topic initiation to requests for information and confirmation.

  • Motion Event Typology meets Computational Modelling
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: SKY Journal of Linguistics. - 1456-8438. ; 19, s. 460-471
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Speaking involves a process of selecting words and constructions which correspond to the thoughts that one wishes to express. Different languages place different constraints on this selection process, corresponding to their typological characteristics. In this paper we show how Swedish, French and Thai preferentially express motion events differently and suggest a theoretical framework with grounds in cognitive science to account for these differences. We proceed to describe an experimental computer program, Verbalizer, which implements aspects of our framework, showing how a single conceptual representation of a motion event can be realized in multiple ways, both within and between the languages. Our research indicates how typological and computational linguistics can benefit from one another.

  • Metaphors below the sentence level : The case of appositives
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: SKY Journal of Linguistics. - : The Linguistic Association of Finland. - 1456-8438 .- 1796-279X. ; 29, s. 179-196
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This squib sketches an analysis of the contribution of appositive constructions to metaphoric readings (Australia, the country with a passion for rugby). It is suggested that optional constructions can contribute the emergence of underlying metaphoric readings of sentences, depending on how they interact with other phrases and constituents. This analysis is based on a simple variant of the Type-Logical Syntax framework, enriched with a simple semantic algorithm that computes "local" source and target domains. As a test case, a discussion of a sub-set of appositives labelled as "spatial" appositives (Australia, the land where dreams come true) is discussed and accounted for.

  • What one verb can do: The Swedish verb göra in a crosslinguistic perspective
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Special Supplement to SKY Journal of Linguistics (ISSN 1456-8438), Volume 19: A Man of Measure: Festschrift in Honour of Fred Karlsson on his 60th Birthday. Editors: Mickael Suominen et al.. - 1456-8438. ; 19, s. 243-257
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper provides a short sketch of the Swedish verb göra ‘make, do’ from a crosslinguistic perspective comparing it in a preliminary way to its major translation equivalents in English, German, French and Finnish. As a lexical verb, göra serves as the nuclear verb among the verbs of production (build, manufacture, write etc). As a grammatical verb, göra fulfils two quite different functions and serves both as an analytic causative marker and as a pro-verb—a verbal parallel both to indefinite pronouns and to anaphoric pronouns. As a pro-verb it has a tendency to develop into a placeholder serving as a slot-filler in the Swedish word order system.

  • #srynotfunny : Communicative functions of hashtags on Twitter
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: SKY Journal of Linguistics. - Helsinki : Linguistic Association of Finland. - 1456-8438 .- 1796-279X. ; 27, s. 127-152
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates various communicative functions served by hashtags in written communication on Twitter from a linguistic pragmatic perspective. A tweet containing a hashtag links to, and is integrated into, a timeline of other tweets containing the same hashtag. Thus, hashtags are by default categorizing or organizing; a user of Twitter may add the tag #food to their tweet to integrate it into a general conversation about this topic. However, this study demonstrates that hashtags are also used creatively to perform other communicative functions. In the data presented, hashtags are employed as complexly multifunctional linguistic devices for, among other things, structuring information, playing games, and engaging in reflexive meta-commentary. Notably, while pragmatic methodology is typically applied to speech, this study indicates that a traditional speech acts framework may be profitably applied to written communication in new media.
