  • Problem-solving skills and perceived stress among undergraduate students : The moderating role of hardiness
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Health Psychology. - : SAGE Publications. - 1359-1053 .- 1461-7277. ; 23:10, s. 1321-1331
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study was designed to examine the relationships between problem-solving skills, hardiness, and perceived stress and to test the moderating role of hardiness in the relationship between problem-solving skills and perceived stress among 500 undergraduates from Malaysian public universities. The analyses showed that undergraduates with poor problem-solving confidence, external personal control of emotion, and approach-avoidance style were more likely to report perceived stress. Hardiness moderated the relationships between problem-solving skills and perceived stress. These findings reinforce the importance of moderating role of hardiness as an influencing factor that explains how problem-solving skills affect perceived stress among undergraduates.

  • Ambivalence in Coping with Dental Fear and Avoidance: A Qualitative Study
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Health Psychology. - : SAGE Publications. - 1359-1053 .- 1461-7277. ; 7:6, s. 653-664
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dental phobia is a widespread problem, which can have significant impact on the individual's health and daily life. This grounded theory study aims to explore the situation of dental phobic patients: how dental phobia interferes with their normal routines and functioning, social activities and relationships, what factors contribute to the maintenance of dental fear and how they cope with their fear. In the qualitative analysis of thematized in-depth interviews four main categories were developed: threat to self-respect and well-being, avoidance, readiness to act and ambivalence in coping. The results show that several psychological and social factors interact in determining how dental phobic individuals cope with their fear, and demonstrate in what way dental fear affects their daily lives.

  • A global measure of sickness behaviour : Development of the Sickness Questionnaire
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Health Psychology. - : SAGE Publications. - 1359-1053 .- 1461-7277. ; 23:11, s. 1452-1463
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Symptoms after inflammatory activation, so-called sickness behaviour, overlap with trans-diagnostic complaints. As no self-report questionnaire to assess sickness behaviour exists, we aimed to develop such an instrument, the Sickness Questionnaire. Items responsive to experimentally induced inflammatory activation (randomized double-blind study endotoxin (0.6 ng/kg) versus placebo, n = 52) were selected and the statistical properties were examined in 172 primary care patients. A principal component analysis indicated a one-factor solution (Cronbach's alpha = .86). This 10-item scale correlated with depression ( β = .41, p < .001), anxiety ( β = .36, p < .001), self-rated health ( β = .28, p < .001) and a single item of feeling sick ( β = .55, p < .001). The results support the adequacy of Sickness Questionnaire as a brief assessment instrument of perceived sickness behaviour.

  • Brief report : Contemplate your symptoms and re-evaluate your health. A study on working adults
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Health Psychology. - : SAGE Publications. - 1359-1053 .- 1461-7277. ; 24:11, s. 1562-1567
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigated whether self-ratings of health are affected by a symptom rating. A diary including a one-item self-rating of health ("pre-self-rated health"; 1 = excellent, 7 = very poor), a subsequent 26-item rating of symptoms, and thereafter a second (identical) health rating ("post-self-rated health") was completed by 820 persons 21 times. Self-rated health worsened significantly ( p < .0001) after the symptom rating, from 2.72 pre-self-rated health (95% confidence interval: 2.70-2.74) to 2.77 post-self-rated health (95% confidence interval: 2.75-2.79) and more so in persons who reported more symptoms ( b = .058, p < .05). The results support the notion that subjective health perception is influenced by attending to symptoms, especially so in persons with a high symptom burden.

  • Inflammation and positive affect are associated with subjective health in women of the general population
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Health Psychology. - : SAGE Publications. - 1359-1053 .- 1461-7277. ; 18:3, s. 311-320
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Poor subjective health has been associated with higher levels of inflammatory cytokines. We investigated whether such an association would apply to women of the general population. Levels of cytokines, affect and subjective health were assessed in 347 women of the general population aged 45 to 90 years. Higher levels of interleukin-6 were associated with poor subjective health, especially in participants over 65 years of age. Positive affect was a more robust determinant of subjective health than negative affect. The presence of low-grade inflammation and absence of positive affect, rather than presence of negative affect, may be important determinants of subjective health.

  • The prevalence of psychological consequences of COVID-19 : A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Health Psychology. - : Sage Publications. - 1359-1053 .- 1461-7277. ; 27:4, s. 805-824
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A systematic review and a meta-analysis were conducted to examine the overall prevalence of psychological health outcomes during COVID-19. Seven databases were systematically searched to include studies reporting on at least one psychological outcome. The pooled prevalence of primary psychological outcomes was 26% (95%CI: 21-32). Pooled prevalence for symptoms of PTSD was 33% (0-86), anxiety 28% (21-36), stress 27% (14-43), and depression 22% (13-33). The prevalence of psychological outcomes was similar in healthcare workers and in the general population (34% [24-44] and 33% [27-40] respectively). High prevalence figures support the importance of ensuring adequate provision of resources for mental health.

  • Words about body and soul: social representations relating to health and illness
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of health psychology. - : SAGE Publications. - 1461-7277 .- 1359-1053. ; 17:8, s. 1110-1120
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose was to examine a sample of Stockholm residents’ social representations of their physical and mental health and ill-health. Four open-ended questions were answered by 1240 people between 18–80 years. A thematic analysis revealed nine aspects of health: physical, lifestyle, psychological, social, recreational, work and study, treatment, other and multifactorial aspects. Some cross-cutting themes were described to have an impact on health: empowerment, health-conscious lifestyle, life balance and life perspective. A key result is the interdependence between physical and mental health that was described by the respondents.

  • The challenging process of disclosing bullying victimization: A grounded theory study from the victim's point of view
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Health Psychology. - : SAGE Publications. - 1359-1053 .- 1461-7277. ; 23:8, s. 1110-1118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • School children are usually encouraged to tell an adult whether they are being bullied. Despite this encouragement, a significant percentage of bullied students do not disclose victimization. Previous research has often failed to include this group of hidden victims, thereby limiting the available knowledge about victimization disclosure. This study aimed to investigate the process of disclosing bullying victimization from the victim’s point of view. Interviews with Swedish youth who had been or currently were victims of bullying in school were carried out and analyzed with grounded theory methods using two-step coding.

  • Sharing clinical notes, and placebo and nocebo effects : Can documentation affect patient health?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Health Psychology. - : Sage Publications. - 1359-1053 .- 1461-7277. ; 27:1, s. 135-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper connects findings from the field of placebo studies with research into patients' interactions with their clinician's visit notes, housed in their electronic health records. We propose specific hypotheses about how features of clinicians' written notes might trigger mechanisms of placebo and nocebo effects to elicit positive or adverse health effects among patients. Bridging placebo studies with (a) survey data assaying patient and clinician experiences with portals and (b) randomized controlled trials provides preliminary support for our hypotheses. We conclude with actionable proposals for testing our understanding of the health effects of access to visit notes.
