  • Emotional and corporeal formations of secularism: a case study of military bases in Turkey, 1980s-2000s
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Social and Cultural Geography. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1464-9365 .- 1470-1197. ; 22:1, s. 97-118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • From the 1980s to the end of 2000s, the Turkish military was actively involved in the construction of Islam as a threat to national security, and in doing so it securitized religious identities in the political arena and in its own ranks. In the process, Turkish military bases became infused with public tensions around religion and secularity and became sites that produced social divisions along these lines on a daily basis. This article explores the uniquely emotional and corporeal the intertwinement of secularism and security as was experienced within the mundane social interactions in the daily life of military bases through ethnographic research conducted in 2011. It focuses on the narratives of the daughters and wives of military officers whose bodies were mapped on to the opposite ends of a security paradigm based on a secular/religious dichotomy. Caught in between designations of security and risk, women’s bodily and emotional experiences reveal the spatial constructions of secularism and the inherently vague and ambiguous distinctions secularism cultivates as a function of modern power. Looking at the gendered and spatially mediated meanings of secular, religious, security and risk, this article contributes to scholarship in cultural and social geographies of secularism through an analysis of corporeal and emotional experiences.

  • ‘When housing is provided, but you have only the closet’. : Sexual orientation and family housing support in Athens
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Social & Cultural Geography. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1464-9365 .- 1470-1197. ; 23:9, s. 1257-1274
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the impact of sexual orientation on the housing practices of individuals self-identified as LGB+ in Athens, Greece. In Greece, welfare state was always inadequate to cover people’s social needs. On the contrary, the family proved to be resilient as a welfare agent covering also the housing needs of its members by employing related strategies. The support comes ‘with strings attached’, and this includes parents’ demands and wishes upon the lifestyle of the dependent children. These demands have strong gender and sexual connotations imposing a heteronormative life trajectory, which may clash with the desires of LGB+ family members. In order for them to continue receiving support they are ‘pushed’ to employ strategies regarding their ‘coming out’ or sexual identity’s concealment process. In this paper, 16 semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with a double focus: a. the housing pathway of the respondents, and b. the strategic decision of coming out or staying in the closet to benefit from the family welfare.

  • Children’s prosthetic citizenship as ‘here-and-now’, ‘not-yet’ and ‘not-here’. the case of the mobile preschool
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Social & Cultural Geography. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1464-9365 .- 1470-1197. ; , s. 1-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the case of the mobile preschool we focus on how children’s prosthetic citizenship is constructed in relation to notions of mobility and place in the accounts of Swedish mobile preschool professionals. Mobile preschools are preschools in buses that visit different places in and around the city on an everyday basis. Analysis of interviews and workshop discussions with mobile preschool professionals shows how three different conceptualisations of children’s ‘proper’ citizenship operate in parallel in these accounts – children as ‘not-yet-citizens’, children as ‘not-here-citizens’ and children as ‘here-and-now-citizens’. These different conceptualisations are constructed in relation to the everyday mobility of the mobile preschool and notions of places as more or less beneficial for children’s proper future and Swedish citizenship, and reveal how mobility is not only a consequence of citizenship relations but also constitutive of them. This paper contributes to knowledge on how mobility and notions of place constitute ideas on citizenship, and how forms and geographies of mobility produce subjects as more or less citizen.

  • 'The right to immobility’ and the uneven distribution of spatial capital : negotiating youth transitions in northern Sweden
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Social & cultural geography (Print). - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1464-9365 .- 1470-1197. ; 20:3, s. 323-343
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 'Successful adulthoods' are associated with mobile professionals, higher education and cosmopolitan lifestyles. This paper takes an interest in how this discourse is adopted or altered by young people living far away from big cities. Based on interviews in a traditional woodland community in northern Sweden, the study examines how young people in the second and final years of upper secondary school negotiate their transition from education to work. It draws on the two-dimensional concept of 'spatial capital'. It sheds light firstly on a range of local possibilities underpinned by 'position capital', such as proximity to mining districts as well as to educational institutions. These possibilities compete with 'situation capital' in the form of young people's dispositions towards mobility where they consider alternatives in other cities in Sweden and sometimes - although rarely - abroad. I argue that spatial capital is an indication of young people's habitus, where the geographical marginality of the study location influences perceptions of the future in divergent and sometimes contradictory ways. The paper also problematizes contemporary society's privileging of mobility, which should be viewed in relation to youth's perceived 'right to immobility'.

  • Great expectations : changing social, spatial and emotional understandings of the companion animal-human relationship
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Social & Cultural Geography. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1464-9365 .- 1470-1197. ; 20:1, s. 43-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the changing social, legal, spatial and emotional understandings of the companion animal-human relationship in Britain during the late twentieth and early twenty-first century, based upon in-depth interviews with pet owners and professionals involved in the pet industry. This period has seen rapid change in attitudes and practices towards companion animals, bringing benefits for both animal health and welfare, but also increasing social, emotional and financial expectations. Animals have become increasingly integrated into the human home and family, whilst simultaneously subject to increasing control of their behaviour and movements in public space. Such changes have brought a culture of 'responsible' pet ownership in which both animals and humans are subject to constant surveillance of their own and others pet-keeping practices. Such expectations are constantly changing and contested, with notions of human identity and status increasingly defined through human-animal relationships. These processes are ongoing and new forms of responsibility are continually evolving, providing new means for caretakers to express their love and care for their animal companions.

  • Shapes of hot water: the ontological politics of handwashing during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Social & Cultural Geography. - : ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD. - 1464-9365 .- 1470-1197.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the ontological politics and practices of handwashing using hot tap water during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden through attending to how handwashing was performed, what thoughts and emotions handwashing practices evoked, and reflections about why these thoughts and emotions emerged. In analyses based on written diaries, stories, digital photos, and videos from the private sphere of the home, we show how the concepts of humans, non-humans, childhood, economy, ethics, infrastructure, and nature – together with public health organizations’ promotions of handwashing recommendations – are enacted and woven into the fabric of hot tap water use. Hot tap water emerged as an ambiguous commodity, differently shaped depending on past experiences and how messages from authorities were received. The politics of the seemingly mundane activity of washing hands (especially prior to the COVID-19 pandemic) consists of connectivities and relationships between various phenomena in fluid space, and blurs the boundaries between local and global, past and present. Thrifty handwashing practices previously established in the private sphere were challenged during the COVID-19 pandemic, as popular versions of surgical scrubbing were promoted. These versions were sometimes challenged when the inclusion of hot water was questioned at home and in public debate.

  • Dwelling on-the-move together in Sweden : sharing exclusive housing in times of marketization
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Social & Cultural Geography. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1464-9365 .- 1470-1197. ; 22:9, s. 1241-1255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For almost a century, Swedes living in shared housing have resided in 'kollektivhus', a form of co-housing that support sharing reproductive work. However, during the past decade, new forms of exclusive shared housing have emerged on the Swedish housing market. In contrast to international trends of vulnerable singles being forced to share housing, this Swedish example shows that also financially privileged singles reside in shared housing. Based on a survey of housing companies and a case study the article argues that mobility has been a driver for this new form of shared housing. In the article, 'dwelling on-the-move together' is identified as a new practice of residing in exclusive shared housing. This practice is characterised by sharing private, exclusive facilities, sharing paid services and sharing spaces for both home and work, in an environment that certifies that residents can come and go as they please while hired staff takes care of their property. While exclusive shared housing is an asset for residents, it also privatise facilities and reintroduces domestic workers to middle-class housing. In all, the marketization of shared housing risks introducing a stratification of shared housing which may reinforce the geographic and social polarisation of Swedish cities.
