  • Clamour for Glamour? Place marketing and city competition for hosting the Swedish tryouts to the Eurovision Song Contest
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Tijdschrift Voor Economische en Sociale Geografie. - : Wiley. - 0040-747X .- 1467-9663. ; 101:2, s. 111-125
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For some time it has been argued that cities all over the world have become more entrepreneurial and increasingly competitive. Most research has focused on spectacular events in well-known metropolises, but far less is known about how smaller cities engage in competitive activities. This paper focuses on how, why and what Swedish cities hope to achieve by engaging themselves in hosting the tryouts to the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), which provides an opportunity for a critical case study of place marketing and city competition in Sweden. The empirical material is based on interviews with stakeholders in the tryouts. Our findings show that the local authorities do not compete in the same way as suggested by the literature, but instead collaborate to a great deal. While there are various motives behind arranging a tryouts tryout, it is noted that whereas the ESC presents an opportunity for a host city to ‘place itself on the map’, hosting a tryout is often mainly seen as an opportunity to show the organisers of the event the city’s potential for hosting other events in the future. Our findings suggest that the main outcome of hosting a tryout, an outcome that the local authorities seem content with, is having arranged a glamorous party for the local inhabitants. The paper concludes by discussing why competition was found to be less outspoken than the literature suggests.

  • The ballad dance of the faeroese: Island biocultural geography in an age of globalisation
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Tijdschrift Voor Economische en Sociale Geografie. - : Wiley. - 0040-747X .- 1467-9663. ; 95:3, s. 284-297
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Boundary issues are central to globalisation - the expansion and time-space integration of human societies - and to both biological and cultural diversity. The latter are, in turn, intrinsically related in processes of coevolution that generate change in the patchwork quilt of cultural and natural landscapes. These processes are especially discernible in small island societies. This paper argues that island studies can enhance our understanding of globalisation processes and how these are involved in the displacement of boundaries and the historically unprecedented decline in both biological and cultural diversity.

  • Contradictions of ‘Sustainable Mobility’– The Illogic of Growth and the Logic of Myth
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Tijdschrift voor economische en sociale geografie. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0040-747X .- 1467-9663. ; 103:5, s. 555-565
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the prospects of viewing ‘sustainable mobility’ as a merger of seemingly opposing values and ideas into a coherent and fully emplotted myth. Myth, in this sense, is not a false story meant to amuse or discredit, but rather a story based on naturalised beliefs giving it the supremacy of the obvious. Through the process of emplotment, myths create internal logics that help relieve anxiety, rationalise behaviour and naturalise societal and individual convictions. As such, myths are a fundamental and habitual part of life. The myth of sustainable mobility is not one, but two stories – that of development as quantitative growth and the discourse of sustainability – which are merged, emplotted and naturalised. It is based on the fears of economic and environmental collapse, but while fear is an essential characteristic of myth and a source of much of its power the myth also offers hope. The hope lies in the promise of continued trends of increased mobility while still being able to preserve the world for ‘future generations’. This entangles the very notions of mobility, development and sustainability, creating a confusion of concepts as the contrast between growth and limits wanes. Rather than setting biophysical limits, sustainability becomes a justification for continued growth – green growth, sustainable mobility.

  • Decomposing the Technology Shift. Evidence from the Swedish Manufacturing Sector
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Tijdschrift Voor Economische en Sociale Geografie. - : Wiley. - 0040-747X .- 1467-9663. ; 99:2, s. 145-159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to conduct an analysis of the changing geographies of production and industrial renewal in Sweden during the period 1978 to 2004. Conceptually, we build on the regional version of the technology shift cycle thesis. This is performed in two steps and by combinations of national and regional empirical evidence. First, we construct a taxonomic method that distinguishes between renewed, followers, transformed, induced, contracting, and obsolete industries in the national production system. These different kinds of industries have all had different roles in the dramatic transformation of Swedish manufacturing, and we empirically identify the groups of industries using new time series data. Second, the regional footprints of the transformation are investigated applying a systemic view of regional development. The results of our investigations provide a detailed picture of the anatomies of both sector and regional transformation of the Swedish economy.

  • Developing cross-border regional innovation systems: key factors and challenges
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Tijdschrift Voor Economische en Sociale Geografie. - : Wiley. - 0040-747X .- 1467-9663. ; 101:2, s. 150-160
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The literature on regional innovation systems has considerably enhanced our understanding of the critical role played by geographical proximity and local institutional conditions for the production of new knowledge and its economic exploitation. In most cases, however, both theoretical and empirical work has focused on regional innovation systems situated within a national context. Little research has been done so far on cross-border regional innovation systems. The aim of this paper is to explore conceptually whether the theoretical approach of regional innovation systems can be applied to cross-border settings. It investigates some critical conditions for the emergence of transfrontier innovation systems and concludes that cross-border areas differ enormously regarding their capacity to develop an integrated innovation space.

  • Exploring Dutch migration to rural Sweden : international counterurbanisation in the EU
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Tijdschrift voor economische en sociale geografie. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0040-747X .- 1467-9663. ; 103:3, s. 330-346
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores whether the concept of counterurbanisation, expanded with an international dimension, offers a valuable framework for understanding recent migration flows from the Netherlands to Sweden. Using a geo-referenced database comprising demographic and socio-economic variables, the post-migration employment status, employment sector and settlement location of Dutch migrants in Central Sweden are analysed. In addition, results from observation, interviews and a survey during emigration fairs are employed to describe the motives for migration from the Netherlands to Central Sweden. We argue that counterurbanisation is not an exhausted research topic, when international political, economic and socio-cultural factors are added to the study.
