  • City Symphony Malmö: the spatial politics of non-institutional memory
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Media Practice. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1468-2753 .- 2040-0926. ; 17:2-3, s. 138-156
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • City Symphony Malmö was a collaborative documentary that engaged citizens of Malmö in recording short film sequences. The Symphony’ video material was also performed at the art and performance centre Inkonst where electronic musicians improvised to VJ’s digital and analogue live mixing of the material. A remediation of the performance was streamed live on the Internet with live footage from the performance. All clips were released under the creative commons licence and made available for remixing through The Pirate Bay. This article explores what it can imply to hand over the means of film production to citizens. The discussion concentrates on participatory and spatially distributed filmmaking and screening of non-institutional memories, produced in the symphony. The analysis merges influence from silent cinema and Soviet Montage [Vertov, Dziga. 1929. A Man with a Movie Camera. Documentary/City Symphony Film], theories of public memory [e.g. Casey, Edward. 2004. “Public Memory in Place and Time.” In Framing Public Memory, edited by Kendall R. Phillips, 17–46. Tuscaloosa: University of Alabama Press; Young, David E. 2000. At Memory’s Edge. New Haven, CT: Yale University Press; Bodnar, John. 1992. Remaking America: Public Memory, Commemoration, and Patriotism in the Twentieth Century. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press], new media [Jenkins, Henry. 2006. Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide. New York: New York University Press; Manovich, Lew. 2001. The Language of New Media. Cambridge: MIT Press.] and place [Appadurai, Arjan. 1996. Modernity at Large. Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press; Lefebvre, Henri. (1974) 1991. The Production of Space. Translated by D. Nicholson-Smith. Oxford: Blackwell Publishers; Harvey, David. 1993. “From Space to Place and Back Again.” In Mapping the Futures: Local Cultures, Global Exchange, edited by Jon Bird, Barry Curtis, Tim Putnam, George Robertson, and Lisa Tickner, 3–29. London: Routledge]. It describes the complexities of creating non-institutional memory and archiving practices and argues that such citizen-driven and non-institutional memories may challenge official history and societal memory production, yet also reproduce typical and iconic images which reveal spatio-material hierarchies. Such complexities demonstrate the value of an analysis of participation and spatio-material dimensions of public memory as unfolded in the article.

  • Artefact-free broadband 2D NMR for separation of quadrupolar and paramagnetic shift interactions
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Solid State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. - : Elsevier BV. - 0926-2040 .- 1527-3326. ; 101, s. 51-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two new two-dimensional, broadband, solid-state NMR experiments for separating and correlating the quadrupolar and shift interactions of spin I = 1 nuclei in paramagnetic systems are proposed. The new pulse sequences incorporate the short, high-power adiabatic pulses (SHAPs) into the shifting d-echo experiment of Walder et al. [J. Chem. Phys., 142, 014201 (2015)], in two different ways, giving double and quadruple adiabatic shifting d-echo sequences. These new experiments have the advantage over previous methods of both suppressing spectral artefacts due to pulse imperfections, and exhibiting a broader excitation bandwidth. Both experiments are analysed with theoretical calculations and simulations, and are applied experimentally to the H-2 NMR of deuterated CuCl2 center dot 2H(2)O, and two deuterated samples of the ion conductor oxyhydride BaTiO3-xHy prepared using two different methods. For the CuCl2 center dot 2H(2)O sample, both new methods obtain very high-quality spectra from which the parameters describing the shift and quadrupolar interaction tensors, and their relative orientation, were extracted. The two BaTiO3-xHy samples exhibited different local hydride environments with different tensor parameters. The H-2 spectra of these oxyhydrides exhibit inhomogeneous broadening of the H-2 shifts, and so whilst the quadrupolar interaction parameters were easily extracted, the measurement of the shift parameters was more complex. However, effective shift parameters were extracted, which combine the effects of both the paramagnetic shift tensor and the inhomogeneous broadening.

  • Public Interest or Self-Interest? How journalism attracts future journalists
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Media Practice. - 1468-2753. ; 16:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the 1990s, Western society and its media have veered towards increased market orientation. In this process, values of individualisation and self-interest have emerged as important patterns. Research has shown that media professionals have become slightly more commercially oriented over time, although public interest remains the most important factor when the duties of journalism are fulfilled. What can be said, however, about the journalists of the future? This study aims at analysing why students from different generations are attracted by journalism as profession. It is done by drawing empirical support from two questionnaires completed by first-year students in Sweden in 1994 and 2012. The analysis deals with approximately 160 journalism students and takes as its point of departure the theoretical framework of commercialisation and generational belonging. The main result shows that journalism students have moved slightly towards an increased market orientation but similarly also towards an increased focus on public interest. The paper discusses how this change may affect journalism.

  • Homonuclear dipolar recoupling of half-integer spin quadrupolar nuclei: techniques and applications
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Solid State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. - : Elsevier BV. - 0926-2040 .- 1527-3326. ; 36:1, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We review recent advances in solid state NMR methodology for recovering homonuclear dipolar interactions among half-integer quadrupolar spins undergoing sample rotation. Existing dipolar recoupling techniques are contrasted, based on (i) the form of their associated dipolar Hamiltonian, (ii) the different experimental conditions necessitating their realization and (iii) their roles as components in multi-dimensional NMR correlation spectroscopy. Various types of structural information accessible from such solid state NMR experimentation is reviewed. Promises and limitations of methodologies targeting homonuclear dipolar couplings between half-integer spins under high-resolution conditions are discussed, with particular focus on the demands set for structural investigations of crystalline as well as structurally disordered (amorphous) inorganic network materials

  • Spectral Deconvolution of NMR Cross Polarization Data Sets
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Solid State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. - : Elsevier BV. - 0926-2040 .- 1527-3326. ; 35, s. 208-213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The COmponent-REsolved (CORE) strategy has been employed, for the first time to solid state NMR spectroscopy. CORE was used to extract two time-dependent spectral components in 24 Si-29(H-1) NMR spectra, recorded on a meso-structured silica material under conditions of cross polarization evolution. No prior assumptions were made about the component bandshapes, which were both found to be skewed to higher chemical shifts. For the silica fragments close to protons this skewness could be rationalized by a distribution of the degree of condensation in the silica network; however, for the other component the non-Gaussian shape was unexpected. We expect that the same strategy could be applied to a range of experiments in solid-state NMR spectroscopy, where spectral distributions or kinetic parameters need to be accurately extracted

  • Anisotropic relaxation of nuclear spins dipolar energy of water molecules in two-dimensional nanopores - A single crystal NMR study
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Solid State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. - 0926-2040 .- 1527-3326. ; 132
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Energy transfer from Zeeman to dipolar order discovered by Jeener et al. is usually observed in solids with a strong dipole-dipole interaction of nuclear spins. It is not observed in liquids, where fast molecular motion completely averages this interaction. The intermediate case, when the dipole-dipole interaction of nuclear spins is only partially averaged, has been poorly studied. We report on the first measurement of an angular-dependent proton spin relaxation of a dipolar reservoir in mobile water molecules confined in the interlayer pores of a vermiculite single crystal. In this layered crystal, the intramolecular dipole-dipole interactions of nuclear spins are only partially averaged due to the restricted anisotropic molecular motion in nanopores. We show that this allows the formation of dipolar echo. We measured the spin-lattice relaxation times of the dipolar order T1D at different angles between the normal to the crystal surface and the applied magnetic field and obtained a distinct angular dependence of T1D. The minimum relaxation rate R1D was found around the magic angle of 54.74°.

  • TensorView for MATLAB : Visualizing tensors with Euler angle decoding
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Solid State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. - : Elsevier BV. - 0926-2040. ; 123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • TensorView for MATLAB is a GUI-based visualization tool for depicting second-rank Cartesian tensors as surfaces on three-dimensional molecular models. Both ellipsoid and ovaloid tensor display formats are supported, and the software allows for easy conversion of Euler angles from common rotation schemes (active, passive, ZXZ, and ZYZ conventions) with visual feedback. In addition, the software displays all four orientation-equivalent Euler angle solutions for the placement of a single tensor in the molecular frame and can report relative orientations of two tensors with all 16 orientation-equivalent Euler angle sets that relate them. The salient relations are derived and illustrated through several examples. TensorView for MATLAB expands and complements the earlier implementation of TensorView within the Mathematica programming environment and can be run without a MATLAB license. TensorView for MATLAB is available through github at https://github.com/LeoSvenningsson/TensorViewforMatlab, and can also be accessed directly via the NMRbox resource.
