  • Social coexistence and violence during Turkey's authoritarian transition
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Southeast European and Black Sea Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1468-3857 .- 1743-9639. ; 21:2, s. 175-187
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recent authoritarian turn and democratic backsliding around the world have raised concerns over increased instability and violent conflicts. Turkey is a striking example of this authoritarian turn with the transition from a multiparty democracy to a competitive authoritarian regime. With seven in-depth case studies from Turkey, this special issue sheds light upon the changing dynamics of violence and social coexistence in countries that experience democratic decline from a transdisciplinary perspective. In this introductory article, we briefly trace the authoritarian transition and societal fault lines in Turkey, discuss the case studies presented in this special issue, and draw out our contribution to the literature.

  • The ‘European Turks’ : identities of high-skilled Turkish migrants in Europe
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Southeast European and Black Sea Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1468-3857 .- 1743-9639. ; 18:1, s. 127-144
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using exceptionally rich qualitative data coming from the FP7 EUCROSS project on the ‘Europeanization of the Everyday Life’, this paper focuses on high-skilled and highly transnational Turkish migrants who reside in the UK, Romania and Italy. The article analyses participants’ discursive constructions of Europe and Europeanness and shows how specific images and symbols of Europe and Turkey influence their own relationship to Europe. We argue that understanding Turkish migrants’ identification with Europe requires a comprehensive analysis of the development of a Westernization discourse in Turkey that has framed people’s identities. This discourse symbolizes the desire for being part of the Western world, and especially Western Europe, but, at the same time, the fear of being dominated by the very same world. We show that we need to grasp the values, images, symbols and discourses that underline transnational practices to understand the making of European identity among migrants.

  • Institutional and symbolic aspects of illiberal politics: the case of North Macedonia (2006–2017)
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Southeast European and Black Sea Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1468-3857 .- 1743-9639. ; 20:1, s. 41-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper discusses the underlying characteristics of Macedonian illiberal politics during the 11-year rule of the centre-right party VMRO-DPMNE (2006–2017) focusing on two aspects: institutional and symbolic. We argue that the unfair political competition was enabled by the weakness of pre-existing institutions and the population’s clientelist preferences, which were systematically exploited and expanded by VMRO-DPMNE. We also argue that the multi-ethnic character of the country, the disputed Macedonian national identity and the lack of viable international prospects allowed VMRO-DPMNE to construct a strong nationalist narrative that appealed to voters and further isolated the opposition.

  • ‘No one is larger than the state.’ : Consent, dissent, and vigilant violence during Turkey’s neoliberal urban transition
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Southeast European and Black Sea Studies. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1468-3857 .- 1743-9639. ; 21:2, s. 189-211
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tophane is a conservative quarter in central Istanbul that has become known for its political support of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). This support has included violent vigilantism against oppositional groups. In the last decade, since gentrification has become more tangible in the area, violence has also turned against perceived newcomers and outsiders. Gentrification, however, is openly condoned and politically enforced by the AKP. Taking the neoliberal transformation of a neighbourhood in Istanbul that displays strong support for the governing party, as a starting point, this article engages with the governance of dissent and the production of consent on the sub-city level. I employ the Gramscian notion of the integral state to argue for a dialectical understanding of consent production in which consent and coercion are seen as intertwined, rather than opposed. To specify this point, I focus on the important, yet ambiguous, role of local state- and party-cadres (local intermediaries) in Istanbul’s urban governance. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and interviews, I show that the neighbourhood in Turkey is a crucial political arena in which intermediaries function as important links between civil society and the state apparatus.

  • Migration, transnationalism and development on the Southeastern flank of Europe
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Southeast European and Black Sea Studies. - : Routledge. - 1468-3857 .- 1743-9639. ; 13:2, s. 125-140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The South-east Europe and Black Sea region presents a fertile terrain for examin- ing recent international migration trends. A wide range of types of migration can be observed in this region: large-scale emigration in many countries, recent mass immigration in the case of Greece, return migration, internal migration, internal and external forced migration, irregular migration, brain drain etc. These migratory phenomena occur within the context of EU migration policies and EU accession for some countries. Yet within this shifting migration landscape of migrant stocks and flows, the fundamental economic geography of different wealth levels and work opportunities is what drives most migration, now as in the past. This paper sets the scene for the special issue in three ways: first, by defining the three key concepts of migration, transnationalism and development; second, by setting the geographical scene, with the aid of relevant statistics on the migration, development and remittance trends in the various countries of the region; and third, by summarizing the highlights of the papers in this issue of the journal, which range in their coverage from Ukraine and Moldova in the north, to Greece and Albania in the south.

  • Taking the matter into your own hands : ethnographic insights into societal violence and the reconfigurations of the state in contemporary Turkey
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Southeast European and Black Sea Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1468-3857 .- 1743-9639. ; 21:2, s. 213-230
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the changing configurations of statehood in the Turkish context through an exploration of men’s engagements with conspiratorial narratives, vigilantism, and extralegal violence against whom they deem to be ‘subversive’ elements. Drawing on ethnographic research on nationalist communities in Trabzon, in northeast Turkey, I trace everyday encounters, imaginations, and utterances to understand how the circulation of conspiracy theories is intricately related to the production and prevalence of societal violence. Rather than dismissing them as untruthful accounts, I explore how the circulation of conspiratorial narratives issue forth pathways through which men act in the name of the state to confront threats against the integrity of the state/nation. The article demonstrates how certain state privileges (e.g., surveillance and legitimate violence) are delegated to civilian actors and how this delegation reconfigures the way the state operates in the Turkish context. Presenting an account of the changing parameters of statecraft, law, and political subjectivity in the Turkish context, findings of this research are of relevance since various other contexts across the globe also experience the adverse effects of the prevalence of conspiracy theories, vigilantism, and extralegal violence.

  • Turkish secularism and Islam under the reign of Erdoğan
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Southeast European and Black Sea Studies. - : Routledge. - 1468-3857 .- 1743-9639. ; 19:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This article introduces a collection of articles that explore the role of religion (Sunni Islam) in the transformation of Turkey under the reign of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi, AKP). This special issue argues that the Turkish understanding of secularism was also one of the building blocks or/and constitutive elements of Turkeys modernisation until the rise of the AKP. Currently, however, it seems that religion has become a new or re-born element of the new Turkey and has been transforming many areas such as: the media, the Kurdish issue, implementation of the rule of law, foreign policy and gender issues. This special issue aims to scrutinise the question: how does a religion-based transformation in Turkey influence the raison detat of the state?

  • An alternative reading of religion and authoritarianism : the new logic between religion and state in the AKPs New Turkey
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Southeast European and Black Sea Studies. - : Routledge. - 1468-3857 .- 1743-9639. ; 19:1, s. 79-98
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since roughly 2011, the Turkish state and the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) have been going through a process of mutual transformation. Some of the historical apprehensions, biases and frustrations exhibited by Turkey as a middle power have been absorbed by the relatively reformist AKP. Conversely, the AKP and its undisputed leader Erdogan have seen their socio-political fears, power based conflicts and ethno-religious desires become dominant in all areas, including religion. As a consequence of this bilateral transformation, Turkey has become both an inclusionary and a hegemonic-authoritarian state, and at the same time a weak one. Within this new identity and structure of the state, Sunni Islam has become one of the regimes key focal points, with a new logic. This article seeks to explain the transformation of the relations between the AKPs Turkish state, religion and religious groups, by scrutinising Karrie Koesels logic of state-religion interaction in authoritarian regimes.

  • GENOME-WIDE ASSOCIATION STUDY OF SJOGREN'S SYNDROME IDENTIFIES TEN NEW RISK LOCI
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ANNALS OF THE RHEUMATIC DISEASES. - : BMJ. - 0003-4967 .- 1468-2060. ; 79, s. 30-31
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Sjögren’s syndrome (SS) is a complex autoimmune disease with exocrine gland dysfunction leading to substantial morbidity. There are 10 published genetic susceptibility loci. Objectives:Our genome-wide association study (GWAS) aimed to identify additional risk loci of genome-wide significance (GWS; p<5E-08) in European-derived primary SS.Methods:A total of 3232 cases and 17481 controls genotyped on GWAS arrays and 619 cases and 6171 controls genotyped on ImmunoChip (IC) arrays were imputed after quality control. Logistic regression was calculated adjusting for ancestry using the first 4 principal components to identify SS-associated SNPs. GWAS and IC results were meta-analyzed using weighted Z-scores. Bayesian statistics were used to assign posterior probabilities and define credible SNP sets for each locus. Bioinformatic analyses were used to predict functionality. Results:Seven novel loci exceeded GWS in the GWAS analysis:NAB1,MIR146A-PTTG1,XKR6,MAPT-CRHR1,RPTOR-CHMP6-BAIAP2,TYK2andSYNGR1. Meta-analysis with IC data identified three more novel loci exceeding GWS:CD247,PRDM1-ATG5andTNFAIP3. Several additional loci with suggestive association (p<1E-05) were also identified:ADAMTSL2,CGNL1andPHRF1.Several identified loci have reported functional implications in immune regulation and autoimmune disease. In lupus, rs2431697 correlated with rs2431098, which was shown to alterMIR146Aexpression, resulting in type I interferon pathway imbalance. Similarly,TYK2risk association reportedly drives interferon, IL10 and RET signaling pathways.PRDM1encodes Blimp-1, a master regulator of immune cell differentiation.CD247encodes the zeta subunit of the T cell receptor complex.XKR6is implicated in apoptotic cell ingestion.ATG5is also involved in apoptosis, as well as autophagy and antigen presentation.Additional bioinformatics analyses (Haploreg, Regulome DB, ENCODE, etc.) revealed immune-relevant functional implications for each risk locus. The SS-associated credible set included variants downstream ofTNFAIP3in a region reported to abolish looping between an enhancer and theTNFAIP3promoter in lupus and a coding variant that has been shown to alter NF-kB activity and neutrophil extra-cellular traps. The rs2293765 in the 5’ UTR ofNAB1showed evidence of enhancer/promoter activities. The rs2069235 in theSYNGR1locus showed enhancer and transcription start site activities in B and T cells. The rs7210219 in theMAPT-CRHR1locus showed enhancer/promotor activities in various tissues. Conclusion:We have identified ten novel genetic susceptibility loci associated with SS pathology. Our finding increases the current number of GWS regions in SS patients of European origin, from 10 to 20. Future work is needed to identify and characterize the functional variants in each region.Disclosure of Interests:Bhuwan Khatri: None declared, Tove Ragna Reksten: None declared, Kandice L Tessneer: None declared, Astrid Rasmussen Speakers bureau: Novartis, ThermoFischer, R Hal Scofield Grant/research support from: Pfizer, Simon J.
