  • Heidegger and socio-ontology : A sociological reading
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Classical Sociology. - 1468-795X .- 1741-2897. ; 13:4, s. 487-508
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper uses the work and employs the tools of the German philosopher Martin Heideggerto attempt to improve sociology. Heidegger’s thinking is employed primarily to undo a paradoxof sociology. Sociology focuses on the social, but starts with the assumption of essentially nonsocialegos that somehow generate a social world. This ‘egologism’ has caused sociology tooccupy itself with a number of pseudo-problems. We argue that Heidegger develops what we calla ‘socio-ontological’ approach, which means that human beings are always already social and dwelloriginarily in a social world. To present this ‘social foundation for sociology’ is the contribution ofthis paper.

  • Between Openness and Closure : Helmuth Plessner and the Boundaries of Social Life
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Classical Sociology. - 1468-795X .- 1741-2897. ; 18:1, s. 36-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article introduces the basic notions of the widely neglected Philosophical Anthropology of Helmuth Plessner. Instead of defining man as a privileged holder of consciousness, Plessner claims that all living organisms can be defined by their specific relation to their physical boundaries. In contrast to other living organisms such as plants and animals, however, the 'eccentric' nature of man allows for a comparatively high degree of freedom from the physical environment, which enables him to transcend, objectify, and deconstruct the boundaries of the same. The article concludes by outlining Plessner's original contribution to contemporary debates in social theory, in particular constructivism and post-humanist studies.

  • The Gift of Life : The Sociology of Religion in Talcott Parsons’ Late Work
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Classical Sociology. - : SAGE Publications. - 1468-795X .- 1741-2897. ; 1:1, s. 127-141
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the last decade of his life, Talcott Parsons devoted a large part of his scholarly attention to the sociology of religion and to the history and symbolism of Christianity. This part of Parsons' work has been almost completely neglected – both in the literature on Parsons and in the sociology of religion. In my interpretation, Parsons' late systems-theoretical ‘human condition paradigm’ is separated from his quasi-structuralist analyses of Jewish and Christian myths. The core of these myths is, according to Parsons, the idea of life as a gift. The article analyses the importance of this idea for(1) a sociological understanding of Christianity, (2) some aspects of contemporary moral theorizing, particularly the question how the Judeo-Christian tradition can be appropriated under the condition of highly developed autonomous individuality, and (3) the question of a latent Protestant bias in Parsons' theory of social change.

  • Moral regulation as status politics: A critical reconstruction of Joseph R. Gusfield’s theory
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Classical Sociology. - : SAGE Publications. - 1468-795X .- 1741-2897. ; , s. 1468795X2110251-1468795X2110251
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sociology of moral regulation has been interested in different kinds of morally charged social movements, such as the temperance movement, to investigate the social reasons why people take part in such movements. One answer is provided by Joseph Gusfield’s classic analysis of the American temperance movement, The Symbolic Crusade, published in 1963. The status politics theory developed therein provides a potential explanation of participation in moral regulation movements. This paper reconstructs the general logic of status politics explanations from an actor-centred perspective, explicating the actor image and the status anxiety mechanism inherent in the theory. Some of the problems discussed include third-person explanations and proof of status anxiety. With due caution, status politics theory provides one alternative for explaining mobilisation in moral regulation movements as well as populist politics.

  • On the essential role of organized skepticism in science’s “internal and lawful autonomy” (Eigengesetzlichkeit)
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Classical Sociology. - 1468-795X. ; 22:3, s. 282-303
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The institution of science is said to be under pressure from political, economic and social interests, manifested in alleged bureaucratization, managerial reforms, anti-intellectual movements on university campuses, and widespread questioning of expert knowledge in society. Commercialization of academic publishing and the growth of competitive funding have increased the importance of journal and grant peer review in science and seem also to have contributed to the proliferation of false impressions about the nature of scientific knowledge production and science’s role in society. In this article, these developments are problematized and put into perspective with the help of classic sociological theory in a Weberian and Mertonian tradition, in an attempt to shed new light on the debate on the governance and institutional autonomy of science. First, academic science is identified as a Weberian value sphere with “internal and lawful autonomy” (Eigengesetzlichkeit), and the broader functionalist context of this supposition is discussed. Second, Merton’s theory of the normative structure of science is used to give specific content to Eigengesetzlichkeit in the case of science. Third, the concept of organized skepticism is developed to represent a range of social patterns ubiquitous in scientific practice, and its epistemological and sociological foundations are discussed. Organized skepticism is thus identified as the essential feature of science’s Eigengesetzlichkeit.

  • A modern calamity – Robert Musil on stupidity
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Classical Sociology. - 1468-795X. ; 18:1, s. 55-75
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The writings of the Austrian novelist and essayist Robert Musil provide sociology with vital problems and reflections. Indeed, Musil introduces discussions that extend conventional understanding of modernity – sociology’s general object of analysis. The article focuses on two major sets of questions in Musil’s work: the shapelessness of man and the relation between reason and sentiments. Both problems are essential in that genuine twentieth-century experience which Musil calls functional stupidity: the functionalisation of the mind to collective demands of the party, the race and the nation. The article discusses Musil’s arguments by relating them to central propositions in classical sociology (Simmel, Weber, Kracauer, Tönnies, Park). Classical sociology, in turn, is defined as a sub-discourse of classical modern reflection.
