  • Developing of the future: scaffolded Darwinism in societal evolution
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Behavioral and Brain Sciences. - 0140-525X .- 1469-1825. ; 37:4, s. 417-418
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We sympathize with the project of a synthetic approach for devising a "theory of intentional change" and agree that Darwinism should be central in such a theory. But Darwinism is not the only process of evolution that needs to be included. Evolutionary biology itself has taken such a turn recently, with the emergence of developmental evolutionary approaches.

  • What are the appropriate axioms of rationality for reasoning under uncertainty with resource-constrained systems?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Behavioral and Brain Sciences. - : Cambridge University Press. - 0140-525X .- 1469-1825. ; 43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • When constrained by limited resources, how do we choose axioms of rationality? The target article relies on Bayesian reasoning that encounter serious tractability problems. We propose another axiomatic foundation: quantum probability theory, which provides for less complex and more comprehensive descriptions. More generally, defining rationality in terms of axiomatic systems misses a key issue: rationality must be defined by humans facing vague information.

  • Anticipation requires adaptation
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Behavioral and Brain Sciences. - 1469-1825. ; 31:2, s. 199-199
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • To successfully interact with a dynamic world, our actions must be guided by a continuously changing anticipated future. Such anticipations must be tuned to the processing delays in the nervous system as well as to the slowness of the body, something that requires constant adaptation of the predictive mechanisms, which in turn require that sensory information be processed at different time-scales.

  • Intellectual conformism depends on institutional incentives, not on socialized culture :
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Behavioral and Brain Sciences. - 0140-525X .- 1469-1825. ; 29:6, s. 569-570
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study by Ceci et al. shows that academic behavior associated with the core principles of intellectual freedom is more shaped by institutional incentives than by organizational culture. From an organizational theoretical point of view, this is quite an unexpected finding, not least because we do believe universities to be fairly strong and explicit cultures that should be successful in socialization.

  • Nonconceptual content and the distinction between implicit and explicit knowledge
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Behavioral and Brain Sciences. - 1469-1825. ; 22:5, s. 760-761
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A subject may be in a state with nonconceptual content without having the concepts that describe the state. Nonconceptual content does not seem to be a clear-cut case of either implicit or explicit knowledge. It underlies a kind of practical knowledge that is not reducible to procedural knowledge, and is accessible to the subject and under voluntary control.

  • The objects of attention: Causes and targets
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Behavioral and Brain Sciences. - 1469-1825. ; 26:3, s. 287-287
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objects of attention can be located anywhere along the causal link from the source of stimuli to the final output of the vision system. As causes, they attract and control attention, and as products, they constitute targets of analysis and explicit comments. Stimulus-driven indexing creates pointers that support fast and frugal cognition.

  • Don’t throw the individual perspective out while waiting for systemic change
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Behavioral and Brain Sciences. - : Cambridge University Press. - 0140-525X .- 1469-1825. ; 46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although it is clear that i-frame approaches cannot stand alone, the impact of s-frame changes can plateau. Combinations of these approaches may best reflect what we know about behavior and how to support behavioral change. Interactions between i-frame and s-frame thinking are explored here using two examples: alcohol consumption and meat consumption.

  • It may be harder than we thought, but political diversity will (still) improve social psychological science
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Behavioral and Brain Sciences. - 0140-525X .- 1469-1825. ; 38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In our target article, we made four claims: (1) Social psychology is now politically homogeneous; (2) this homogeneity sometimes harms the science; (3) increasing political diversity would reduce this damage; and (4) some portion of the homogeneity is due to a hostile climate and outright discrimination against non-liberals. In this response, we review these claims in light of the arguments made by a diverse group of commentators. We were surprised to find near-universal agreement with our first two claims, and we note that few challenged our fourth claim. Most of the disagreements came in response to our claim that increasing political diversity would be beneficial. We agree with our critics that increasing political diversity may be harder than we had thought, but we explain why we still believe that it is possible and desirable to do so. We conclude with a revised list of 12 recommendations for improving political diversity in social psychology, as well as in other areas of the academy.
