  • Logistics and the environment: Is it an established subject?
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-5567. ; 7:2, s. 137-149
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The issue of environmental implications of logistics systems is one of the future challenges to logisticians. The purpose of this paper is to explore the logistics and supply chain management discipline to see how the scientific community handles this challenge. Observations in the primary literature revealed that there are weak ties between the logistics/SCM discipline and the environmental discipline. Our analysis indicated that the literature seems to be unbalanced: knowledge about assessing ‘impact of logistics on environment’ is missing, and most emphasis is on ‘impact of environment on logistics.’ Knowledge about implementation comes mainly within reverse logistics literature, which has been described by scholars as exploratory and anecdotal. When comparing the subject ‘log/SC & environ’ with other subjects in the logistics literature, less attention has been paid to ‘log/SC & environ’. Moreover, almost half the articles on ‘log/SC & environ’ are published outside the primary logistics-related journals.

  • Mitigating transportation disruptions in a supply chain : a cost-effective strategy
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 23:2, s. 139-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transportation disruptions can be damaging to a supply chain because goods may not arrive on time and this jeopardises the service level to the customers. While supply chain disruptions have gained significant attention from scholars, little has been done to explore these disruptions in the context of transportation. The study described in this paper aims to address disruptions occurring in the transportation of goods from a plant to a distribution centre. We modelled this real case to obtain insights on the effectiveness of different strategies to mitigate transportation disruptions. We evaluated four mitigation strategies and compared the outcomes in terms of service level and total costs: (1) the risk acceptance strategy, (2) the redundant stock strategy, (3) the flexible route strategy, and (4) the redundant-flexibility strategy. The results suggest that the best strategy differs depending on the budget that managers are willing to deploy to improve the service level. The simulation experiments and the use of the Incremental Cost Effectiveness Ratio (ICER) would be instrumental in helping decision makers in selecting the best disruption mitigation strategies where the best option would likely be different under varying circumstances.

  • Optimal pricing and terminal location for a rail-truck intermodal service : a case study
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 14:5, s. 335-359
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To be competitive with other modes of transport, the railway needs to be cost-effective. In order to become more competitive in the logistics industry, Indian Railways has taken new initiative to improve their operations in recent years. A rail-truck intermodal transportation service for Indian Railways is described in this paper. The main focus of the present research is to optimize the freight rate and terminal location together, in order to minimize the total shipping cost of truckers while ensuring the targeted profit of the railway. A model has been developed for the determination of the optimal freight rate and the corresponding intermodal terminal location. The key regulators of this model are the price sensitivity of the trucker and profit guarantee for railways. A case study was developed on the Delhi - Mumbai freight corridor. An analysis was performed to gain insight into the trade-offs among shipment cost and terminal locations.

  • Integrating the performance management process of on-time delivery with suppliers
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 13:3, s. 225-241
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses the importance of integrating the performance management (PM) process of on-time delivery with suppliers and analyses the perceived degree of such integration. It describes how the PM process of on-time delivery is managed in manufacturing companies and compares the integration and management issues of on-time delivery between companies with high and low perceived on-time delivery performance. Analysis is based on a survey study of Swedish manufacturing companies in 10 industrial sectors. The focus is on on-time delivery from the respondents' most important supplier. The PM activities defining metrics, target setting, measurement and analysis are not highly integrated between customers and suppliers when measuring on-time delivery. This is especially true for measurement activity, which is the activity with most issues to manage and integrate. The PM issues most significantly related to high on-time delivery performance were automated data collection, registration and report generation.

  • Capturing food logistics: a literature review and research agenda
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics Research and Applications. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 18:1, s. 16-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How to feed the world is a vital question and likewise the importance of food logistics. This paper presents a literature review of the food aspects in logistics research. A total of 159 published papers were identified from 9 logistics and supply chain management journals, whereof 104 focused on food logistics. The papers were categorised into the type of logistics activities studied from the perspective of different food supply chain actors and actor constellations. The papers were also grouped according to which food product characteristics they had highlighted as impacting logistics activities. It was noticed that food products have unique characteristics and that food supply chain actors work in a specific context. Thus, this paper puts forward a comprehensive definition of food logistics: Food logistics analyses logistics activities within a food supply chain context by problematising food product characteristics and by examining the constellation of food supply chain actors.

  • Integrating logistics into the outsourcing process
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics Research and Applications. - Oxon : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 12:4, s. 281-298
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A general outsourcing process was derived from the literature; areas of logistics important to consider during an outsourcing process were then categorised and related to this process. The process was applied to empirical data from three companies. All three companies included all phases of the general outsourcing process in their outsourcing projects. The derived process thereby mirrors how these companies work with outsourcing projects. This makes it possible for other companies to use the process. All the companies included logistics considerations in at least one of the phases as well as transportation cost. Using the general process including logistics would reduce the possibility of overlooking important considerations during outsourcing projects and decrease the problems discovered after implementation. An improved and more systemised outsourcing process would also probably decrease the time necessary for outsourcing projects. Further research should include studies of ongoing outsourcing projects using the general outsourcing process including logistics.

  • Utilising the potential of combining local and global supply chains
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics Research and Applications. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 13:4, s. 313-326
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Outsourcing of manufacturing leaves two options for the structuring of the supply network: either complete outsourcing of an item or process, or combining external sourcing and in-house manufacturing. The objective of this paper is to explain the effect on performance of various strategies of combining in-house manufacturing and outsourced manufacturing. The analysis is based on a case study of a European manufacturer (EM) that has outsourced part of its casting processes to Chinese suppliers. The strategieswere tested by means of a simulation study and compared in terms of their effects on inventory performance. The study showed at significance level p

  • Operating environment-based spare parts forecasting and logistics : a case study
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 8:2, s. 95-105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In today's highly dynamic and constantly changing industrial environment, issues relating to product support are becoming increasingly important. However, the extent of attention given to these issues varies considerably depending on the perspective of the interested person or profession. These are likely to vary from design engineers at the conceptual stages of product development to manufacturers and users in the latter stages. Additionally, the make up a particular product support package varies according to type of system/mission, application and stages of machine/system life. The lack of timely or incomplete support is likely to cause unexpected downtimes, which in turn will lead to losses for which one is unable to compensate. Falling within the definition of product support items are spare parts. The lack of a critical spare part can cause untimely stoppage of machine/system. Forecasting of product support and spare parts requirements based on reliability and maintainability (R&M) characteristics of system/components together with system operating environment(s) is one of the most effective strategies for prevention of unplanned stoppages. In this paper the effects of environmental factors on hydraulic brake pump used in mine loaders are presented and analysed. The reliability of this non-repairable part and its operational impact are assessed for both when the environmental factors are considered and when they are ignored. From the study, it is found that the forecasting for brake pump inventory is more accurate when environmental factors are included in the calculations. These results demonstrate the value of the inclusion of environmental factors data in the product support logistics' optimisation process.
