  • Visual transcriptions as socio-technical assemblages
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Visual Communication. - : Sage Publications. - 1470-3572 .- 1741-3214. ; 20:2, s. 289-309
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the development of visual digital technologies it has become more common in the social sciences to both use and present research visually. This article explores different strategies for working with and including images in ethnomethodology and conversation analysis (EMCA) transcriptions. The purpose is to investigate how, and if, the ontology of the transcript changes when verbal transcripts become visual transcripts. The article explores what ensures that a transcript is still a transcript and what happens to the reflexive interpretative strategy fundamental to EMCA when new digital technologies make it possible to incorporate images in transcripts. The articles focus is on the social life of methods as well as methodological productivity showing how images can enact different social realities and scientific knowledge.

  • Media witnessing and the crowd-sourced video revolution'
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Visual Communication. - : SAGE Publications. - 1470-3572 .- 1741-3214. ; 12:3, s. 341-357
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Focusing on the critical case of the mobile phone footage of Gaddafi's death in the context of Swedish television news and its audiences, this article considers how the nature of media witnessing' is being transformed through the employment of user-generated footage. On the basis of a combined text/audience analysis study, it shows that citizen video encodes an extraordinary sense of presence and participation. Critically, however, its facilitation of pseudo-eyewitnessing' is not enough in itself to sustain practices of bearing witness. Rather, the author shows that moral responsibility is fundamentally conditioned by the symbolic management of distance - which, audiences stress, is most efficiently provided by professional news packages. Importantly, then, this empirical study corroborates the so far mainly theoretical claim in literature on media witnessing which advocates that media representations need to maintain a proper distance' in order to construct scenes of suffering and violence as a moral cause to spectators.

  • Establishing authenticity and commodifying difference : a social semiotic analysis of Sámi jeans
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Visual Communication. - : Sage Publications. - 1470-3572 .- 1741-3214. ; 21:2, s. 195-217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates a semiotic phenomenon within the global fashion industry: the branding of designer jeans as ‘authentic’ and ‘genuinely local’, focusing on the Swedish brand Sarva. Drawing on a social semiotics approach, the authors see authenticity as a discursive construct and look at the ways in which Sarva authenticate their jeans as Sámi in multimodal texts. The aim is: (1) to reveal how places and narratives are commodified in texts that accompany the jeans; and (2) to explore how authenticity is materially instantiated in the jeans by using different resources. The article focuses on the connotative provenance and affordances of different semiotic materials for the rendering of authenticity. The analysis of the jeans as semiotic entities reveals how the thickness of the garment, texture and leather details, and the choice of materials, languages as well as iconography, evoke ideas about historical and local ‘Sáminess’, whilst at the same time indexing a global ideology that regiments what quality jeans are. The analysis shows how authenticity can be reinvented and relocated in ways that allow a commodity to travel between the local and the global. It also shows how this movement is not neutral or straightforward, but rooted in power relations that underlie globalization and advanced capitalism.

  • Semiotics of destruction : Traces on the environment
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Visual Communication. - : Sage Publications. - 1470-3572 .- 1741-3214. ; 21:2, s. 218-236
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research in fields such as multimodality and semiotics has focused on creation of value in different forms: aesthetic, economic and symbolic. However, the destruction of value has attracted much less attention. The aim of this article is to identify social, semiotic and ideological functions of acts of destruction based on an analysis of the traces these acts leave on the urban environment. Five overarching acts of destruction are discussed, but the authors’ main focus is on what they call transformation-driven and social presence-driven destruction, with two examples from Sweden and South Africa. The article discusses sanctioned destructive acts that are largely in compliance with dominating semiotic regimes at a certain time and place, as well as disruptive actions that challenge or even disobey those regimes. The analysis shows how a distinction between sanctioned and disruptive is in no way clear and often depends on complex power distributions between semiotic regimes at a given time and place. In fact, traces in the physical environment that may point to or index highly destructive acts can, in relation to other semiotic regimes, be regarded as creative and constructive. The authors argue that the semiotic processes of destruction and the traces they leave deserve more attention from research in the fields of multimodality and semiotics.

  • Tracking visual segmentation : connecting semiotic and cognitive perspectives
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Visual Communication. - : SAGE Publications. - 1470-3572 .- 1741-3214. ; 11:3, s. 259-281
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article introduces a new methodology for deriving the dynamics of visual segmentation in relation to the underlying cognitive processes involved. The method combines social semiotics approaches to visual segmentation with eye-tracking studies on authentic image viewing and simultaneous image description. The authors' thesis is that visual segmentation suggested by the social semiotic approach is traceable in the behaviour of the viewers who perceive images while creating meaning. From this perspective, visual zooming is seen as both perceptually, cognitively, grammatically and analytically relevant. The interdisciplinary approach developed in the article presents new perspectives on the ways images are segmented and interpreted.

  • Clothing and meaning making : a multimodal approach to women’s abayas
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Visual Communication. - London, United Kingdom : Sage Publications. - 1470-3572 .- 1741-3214. ; 17:2, s. 187-207
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article takes a multimodal discourse approach to women’s fashion in the Middle East. It places the Islamic abaya in the UAE in the context of the wider literature on fashion and identity, exploring the way in which clothing features and forms can prescribe ideas, values and attitudes, and framing this discussion within newer ideas on globalization. As Roland Barthes argued, it is not so much personal choice or diversity in fashion that is of interest, but the kinds of values and expected behaviours that they imply. The abaya, on the one hand, represents a more newly arrived idea of traditional, local and religious identity, linking to some extent to an imagined sense of a monolithic notion of Islamic clothing. But, on the other hand, this is itself reformulated locally through international representations, ideas and values, and integrated with newer ideas of taste.

  • The local and the global in the visual design of a Chinese women's lifestyle magazine : a multimodal critical discourse approach
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Visual Communication. - : SAGE Publications. - 1470-3572 .- 1741-3214. ; 13:3, s. 287-301
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article uses a multimodal critical discourse analytic approach to analyse how a Chinese women's magazine has changed visually over 17 years, partly through the gradual adoption of international branding design styles and partly through consumer product influences from Japan that are used to recontextualize core Chinese values and women's identities. The authors conclude that, like established international magazine brands, this title signifies freedom, but of a very different order to that found in those counterparts.
