  • Weber’s value spheres, functional differentiation, and Zetterberg’s Many-Splendored Society
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Max Weber Studies. - 1470-8078. ; 21:2, s. 151-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Weber's notion of value spheres is famous but underdeveloped as a theory framework. Prominent sociologists have shown that it can be used as a unifying force in functionalist differentiation theory, and as a tool in the analysis of modernity. One of the theorists in this tradition is Hans L. Zetterberg, who throughout his varied career remained attached to the idea of society as composed of six value spheres or institutional realms. His theorizing on basis of this idea is the perhaps most purposeful and systematized, yet largely unnoticed, effort to develop the value spheres into a theory of society. Zetterberg's works in this realm are examined in an attempt to evaluate their relevance and potential, to put them in the proper context of Weberian and functionalist sociology, and to inspire renewed use of the value spheres in sociology.

  • Lehrfreiheit, Lernfreiheit, Wertfreiheit : Max Weber and the University Teacher's Congress in Jena 1908
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Max Weber Studies. - 1470-8078. ; 4:2, s. 201-219
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to highlight some of the problems that originally caused Weber to develop his doctrine of a value-free science. For Weber, the question of whether one should assert practical evaluations in science, was one of university politics, and could therefore be decided 'only with reference to those tasks which the individual, according to his own set of values, assigns to the universities'. In 1908, Weber participated in the University Teacher's Congress in Jena, where some of Germany's leading scholars had gathered to propose a resolution on academic freedom. The subject was controversial, and the debate that the conference initiated was later to continue in the daily press. Weber's contributions to the discussion deserves attention especially since they shed light on his motives for propagating a value-free science. It will be argued that his campaign for value-freedom must be viewed against the backdrop of contemporary debates on academic freedom.

  • Max Weber, Parliamentarism and the Rhetorical Culture of Politics
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Max Weber Studies. - : Max Weber Studies. - 1470-8078. ; 4:2, s. 273-292
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article the concept of parliamentarism is extended to the concept of ’government by speaking’ (Macaulay 1857), to a political form of rhetorical culture based on arguing for and against. Weber’s relationship to parliamentarism is reassessed in this perspective. The first part deals with his ’parliamentary theory of knowledge’, which refers to his view that the competition of perspectives is constitutive of the human sciences. In this sense the Weberian ideal of scientific practices resembles politics in its openness to change and re-valuation of controversy. In the second part Weber’s critique of anti-parliamentarism is analysed as a rejection of political controversy and struggle. In the third part Weber’s theory of knowledge serves as a point of departure for re-reading his late writings on suffrage, parliamentarism and politicians. The opposition between bureaucracy and politics in particular can be rendered more intelligible in terms of Weber’s ’parliamentary theory of knowledge’.
