  • Prion-like transmission of protein aggregates in neurodegenerative diseases.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nature Reviews. Molecular Cell Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-0072 .- 1471-0080. ; 11:4, s. 301-307
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neurodegenerative diseases are commonly associated with the accumulation of intracellular or extracellular protein aggregates. Recent studies suggest that these aggregates are capable of crossing cellular membranes and can directly contribute to the propagation of neurodegenerative disease pathogenesis. We propose that, once initiated, neuropathological changes might spread in a 'prion-like' manner and that disease progression is associated with the intercellular transfer of pathogenic proteins. The transfer of naked infectious particles between cells could therefore be a target for new disease-modifying therapies.

  • How ancient RNA survives and what we can learn from it
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nature reviews. Molecular cell biology. - 1471-0072 .- 1471-0080.
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although normally transient, RNA can persist postmortem when preserved by cold, desiccation or chemical treatment. In this Comment, we discuss how ancient RNA enables the study of gene expression of (pre)historic viruses, plants and animals going back at least as far as the last Ice Age. Friedlander and Gilbert introduce the study of ancient RNA of viruses, plants and animals, and how it can inform us of (pre)historic gene expression.

  • The spatial and temporal organization of ubiquitin networks
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nature reviews. Molecular cell biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-0072 .- 1471-0080. ; 12:5, s. 295-307
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the past decade, the diversity of signals generated by the ubiquitin system has emerged as a dominant regulator of biological processes and propagation of information in the eukaryotic cell. A wealth of information has been gained about the crucial role of spatial and temporal regulation of ubiquitin species of different lengths and linkages in the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) pathway, endocytic trafficking, protein degradation and DNA repair. This spatiotemporal regulation is achieved through sophisticated mechanisms of compartmentalization and sequential series of ubiquitylation events and signal decoding, which control diverse biological processes not only in the cell but also during the development of tissues and entire organisms.

  • The European Research Council--a new opportunity for European science
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nature reviews. Molecular cell biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-0072 .- 1471-0080. ; 9:5, s. 417-420
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The long-awaited European Research Council (ERC), which receives money from the research budget of the European Union and will finance fundamental science for Europe's scientists, has finally been established. With a focus on excellence, calls for both young and experienced scientists and an average budget of \[euro]1 billion per year, the ERC will have the opportunity to give basic research in Europe a significant boost.

  • Heparan sulphate proteoglycans: the sweet side of development.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Nature Reviews. Molecular Cell Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-0072 .- 1471-0080. ; 6:7, s. 530-541
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pattern formation during development is controlled to a great extent by a small number of conserved signal transduction pathways that are activated by extracellular ligands such as Hedgehog, Wingless or Decapentaplegic. Genetic experiments have identified heparan sulphate proteoglycans (HSPGs) as important regulators of the tissue distribution of these extracellular signalling molecules. Several recent reports provide important new insights into the mechanisms by which HSPGs function during development.
