  • Trust and self-efficacy in formal learning networks : the effects on entrepreneurs’ capacity to act upon business opportunities
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Learning. - : Inderscience. - 1471-8197 .- 1741-8089. ; 12:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In efforts to promote better realization of business opportunities, government support of formal policy led learning networks among entrepreneurs has been a popular approach world-wide. This article uses survey data from 109 entrepreneurs who took part in formal learning networks to examine how trust in network partners influences the capacity to act upon business opportunities for entrepreneurs. Further, we examine how this influence is moderated by the entrepreneurs’ own self-efficacy. Our results support a positive relationship between developing trust in other networking entrepreneurs and the capacity to act upon business opportunities. Self-efficacy was found to moderate this relationship. For entrepreneurs with low self-efficacy, results support an inverted U-shaped relationship, with the greatest outcomes reached with an intermediate level of trust. For entrepreneurs with high self-efficacy, a positive linear relationship is supported. We discuss implications for further research on trust and realization of opportunities, and for learning network policy.

  • Triple helix collaborative innovation and value co-creation in an Industry 4.0 context
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Learning. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1471-8197 .- 1741-8089. ; 32:2, s. 125-147
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digitalisation and Industry 4.0 promote a fundamental technological disruption that requires industry, research and government institutions to revisit their roles within the innovation ecosystems. Actors in this environment need to understand value co-creation during interaction and collaboration. The purpose of this study is to investigate the triple helix collaborative capabilities in an Industry 4.0 ecosystem context. The case under study is a Finnish national publicly funded research project involving five global manufacturers, three research institutions, and several small-and medium-size enterprises (SMEs). The results demonstrate that practices related to adaptivity, experience sharing, SME co-innovation and scale up can enable the ecosystem to be managed in a dynamic way. Yet, this type of operation requires the adoption of the ecosystem approach with mutual trust, intensive collaboration and the identification of common aims among the project participants. The presented co-innovation model can be used to design innovation ecosystem projects in the future.

  • Design as a source of international competitive advantage for SMOPEC firms
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Learning. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1471-8197 .- 1741-8089. ; 18:3, s. 277-298
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the rise of the international markets, firms need to be more creative and dynamic in order to gain success internationally. Design as an intangible non-price factor offers efficiently a unique way to achieve an international competitive advantage over competitors. This study presents theoretical consideration of design, its dimensions, and how design can provide a distinct competitive advantage in ever-increasing global competition. The theoretical consideration helps form a conceptual framework, conducted by descriptive research, emphasising the internal and external influences that affect the ways of using design as a source of international competitive advantage amongst small and open economies (SMOPECs). This study has found that design resource as firm’s internal resource needs to be valuable and rare, and offer a unique way to generate a value creating competitive strategy. To get the utmost benefits of design, it should be used strategically and linked to a firm’s business strategy and other key functions. The theoretical consideration further showed explicitly that a positive correlation exists between design and firm’s business success. However, it becomes clear that there are differences between the insight of knowledge and the reality of using it.

  • Virtual design and construction : innovation process and diffusion in Finnish construction business
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Learning. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1471-8197 .- 1741-8089. ; 18:2, s. 133-150
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In construction business, implementation of innovations seems to be difficult especially when high-technology is involved. There are some observed barriers such as its cyclical nature and project-based working which are not ideal for implementing processes. This paper highlights leadership skills instead of traditional skills from the management and suggests that there is a need to change some human resource management practices. In projects-based industry, learning processes must happen in the projects themselves and cooperation between projects is highly important. Also good communication skills and channels are essential. Innovations and leadership have a crucial role in this process.

  • Modes of learning and entrepreneurial knowledge
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Learning. - Olney : InderScience Publishers. - 1471-8197 .- 1741-8089. ; 18:1, s. 101-122
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we examine how entrepreneurs differ in their modes of learning and whether variations in modes of learning have any influence on their possession of entrepreneurial knowledge that increase their ability to recognise and exploit new business opportunities. Based on statistical analysis of 291 entrepreneurs we find that a learning mode that favours exploration is positively associated with the ability to recognise a higher number of business opportunities. A learning mode that favours exploitation is on the other hand negatively associated with the ability to cope with liabilities of newness. Adding to this, we find that the positive association between career experience and entrepreneurial knowledge is stronger with a learning mode that favours exploration. • Benchmarking and developing the operational competitiveness of Chinese state-owned manufacturing enterprises in a global context
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Learning. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1471-8197 .- 1741-8089. ; 7:2, s. 202-222
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to study the operational competitiveness of Chinese State-Owned Manufacturing Enterprises (CSOMEs) by analysing the case CSOME and comparing it with other global manufacturing companies in a Global Manufacturing Strategies (GMSS) database for developing innovation and learning. Analytical models are used to analyse the operational competitiveness of the case CSOME and its subsidiaries based on the weights of the multicriteria manufacturing strategies. The operational competitiveness development of its subsidiaries are applied to predict the future operational competitiveness of the case CSOME in a global context. The results show that quality is the most important competitive priority of the case CSOME and the case CSOME have some advantages when competing in a prospector group. The ranking and stability of the operational competitiveness of the case CSOME imply that: (1) the top CSOMEs have a strong operational competitiveness in the global context; however, they have some gaps compared to the top manufacturing enterprises in the world and (2) it will take a long time for the top CSOMEs to improve their operational competitiveness because of a huge organisational structure. • End-of-life care in intensive care units: family routines and environmental factors.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian journal of caring sciences. - : Wiley. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 21:1, s. 25-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to describe family care routines and to explore environmental factors when patients die in Swedish intensive care units (ICUs). The main research questions were: what are the physical environmental circumstances and facilities when caring for patients in end-of-life and are there any routines or guidelines when caring for dying patients and their families? A questionnaire was sent to 79 eligible Swedish ICUs in December 2003, addressed to the unit managers. The response rate was 94% (n = 74 units). The findings show that, despite recommendations highlighting the importance of privacy for dying ICU patients and their families, only 11% of the respondents stated that patients never died in shared rooms in their ICU. If a patient dies in a shared room, nurses strive to ensure a dignified goodbye by moving the body to an empty room or to one specially designated for this purpose. The majority (76%) of the units had waiting rooms within the ICU. The study also revealed that there is a need for improvements in the follow-up routines for bereaved families. Many units reported (51%) that they often or almost always offer a follow-up visit, although in most cases the bereaved family had to initiate the follow-up by contacting the ICU. Guidelines in the area of end-of-life care were used by 25% of the ICUs. Further research is necessary to acquire a deeper knowledge of the circumstances under which patients die in ICUs and what impact the ICU environment has on bereaved families.
