  • Attitudes towards caring for older people in Scotland, Sweden and the United States
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nursing Older People. - : RCNi. - 1472-0795 .- 2047-8941. ; 26:2, s. 33-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim To explore the attitudes of nurses and nursing students in Scotland, Sweden and the US towards working with older people.Method This quantitative study used the 20-item Multifactorial Attitudes Questionnaire (MAQ) to elicit attitudes on ageism, resources, working environment, education and professional esteem. Researchers from each country distributed the questionnaires to nursing students and nurses, giving a convenience sample of 1,587 respondents. Data were entered on the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 18 and merged into one large dataset. Results Scottish participants had the highest (positive) and Swedish participants the lowest mean MAQ score. The Kruskal-Wallis test showed significant differences in mean scores across the countries in 18 of the 20 statements, even when controlling for age and experience. Most participants gave positive responses, but agreed that negative attitudes towards working with older people pervade among peers due to working conditions, poor career prospects and a perceived lack of professional esteem. Conclusion Inspirational educators, excellent clinical placements and increasing the professional esteem of those working with older people are required to promote the specialty as an attractive career option.

  • Reflections of older people living in nursing homes
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Older People Nursing. - : RCN Publishing Ltd.. - 1748-3735 .- 1748-3743. ; 26:1, s. 33-39

    • AimTo explore experiences of ageing in older people living in nursing homes, based on the gerotranscendence theory.MethodInterviews were held with 14 people aged between 80 and 96 years. The results were analysed using content analysis.FindingsThe findings were divided into three categories: the self, the cosmic dimension, and social and personal relationships. These three categories were underpinned by eight subcategories. Most participants described improved knowledge about themselves, decreased concern about body and appearance, acceptance and appreciation of life, and less regard for social norms. A fewer participants described a greater affinity with past generations, or thought that the borders between past and present had become blurred.ConclusionThis study provides a better understanding of how people experience old age. It also indicates how healthcare professionals could apply the gerotranscendence theory of ageing as a conversation model to enable care to be adjusted according to older people's wishes.

  • Exploring the use of music as an intervention for older people living in nursing homes.
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nursing Older People.. - : RCNi Journals. - 1472-0795 .- 2047-8941. ; 33:6, s. 14-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Enjoying cultural events such as musical performances is a human right as well as contributing to quality of life. However, older people who live in nursing homes are often excluded from such events. Music interventions for older people with cognitive decline have been shown to have a positive effect on their mood and behaviour, particularly in terms of anxiety, agitation and irritability. Aim: To investigate the effect of musical interventions in nursing homes from the perspective of older people, their relatives and caregivers. Method: Musical performances were held at 11 nursing homes in Sweden. These performances were followed by semi-structured interviews that aimed to capture the experiences of the older people, their relatives and caregivers. The interviews were analysed by qualitative thematic analysis. Findings: Four relational themes were generated from the analysis: music enhances well-being for the body and soul, music evokes emotions and a 'spark of life', music adds a 'silver lining' to everyday life, and music inspires a journey of the imagination through time and space. Conclusion: The music concerts had a positive effect on older people, their relatives and caregivers. Providing cultural encounters in nursing homes is an important caring intervention.

  • Tools to assess the nutritional status of acutely ill older adults.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Nursing older people. - 1472-0795. ; 18:5, s. 31-35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nurses are responsible for identifying patients who are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. They are also expected to follow-up patients' nutritional status and to initiate preventive and caring interventions. The aim of this Swedish study was to explore whether simple assessment tools used during hospital admission could identify older adults at risk of malnutrition.
