  • A business model pattern arrives … and then? A translation perspective on business model innovation in established firms
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Strategic Organization. - : SAGE Publications. - 1476-1270 .- 1741-315X.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines business model innovation in an established firm. We investigate the case of a Swedish utility company that adopted and implemented a business model pattern originating from outside the firm. We draw upon Scandinavian translation theory to understand the micro-level dynamics of how business model innovation unfolds. Our findings show that the business model pattern is disassembled into its constituent parts, that these are translated separately and, little by little, (re)assembled into a whole to form a new business model. This process involves several loops of translation activated by the interplay between five practices: formulating, engaging, resisting, anchoring, and energizing. On the basis of our findings, we develop a business model translation framework. We thereby contribute to a better understanding of the micro-level perspective on business model innovation initiated by the adoption of a business model pattern. We also reveal that business model innovation processes triggered by business model patterns from outside differ from those taking place when a new business model is entirely developed within a firm.

  • A palace fit for the future : Desirability in temporal work
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Strategic Organization. - : Sage Publications. - 1476-1270 .- 1741-315X. ; 20:1, s. 20-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research on the strategic organization of time often assumes that collective efforts are motivated by andoriented toward achieving desirable, although not necessarily well-defined, future states. In situationssurrounded by uncertainty where work has to proceed urgently to avoid an impending disaster, however, temporal work is guided by engaging with both desirable and undesirable future outcomes. Drawing ona real-time, in-depth study of the inception of the Restoration and Renewal program of the Palace ofWestminster, we investigate how organizational actors develop a strategy for an uncertain and highlycontested future while safeguarding ongoing operations in the present and preserving the heritage of thepast. Anticipation of undesirable future events played a crucial role in mobilizing collective efforts to moveforward. We develop a model of future desirability in temporal work to identify how actors construct, link, and navigate interpretations of desirable and undesirable futures in their attempts to create a viable path ofaction. By conceptualizing temporal work based on the phenomenological quality of the future, we advanceunderstanding of the strategic organization of time in pluralistic contexts characterized by uncertainty and urgency.

  • Changing assumptions and progressive change in theories of strategic organization
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Strategic Organization. - : SAGE Publications. - 1476-1270 .- 1741-315X. ; 15:3, s. 410-422
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A commonly held view is that strategic organization theories progress as a result of a Popperian process of bold conjectures and systematic refutations. However, our field also witnesses vibrant debates or disputes about the specific assumptions that our theories rely on, and although these debates are often decoupled from the results of empirical testing, changes in assumptions seem closely intertwined with theoretical progress. Using the case of the resource-based view, we suggest that progressive change in theories of strategic organization may come about as a result of scholarly debate and dispute over what constitute proper assumptions—even in the absence of corroborating or falsifying empirical evidence. We also discuss how changing assumptions may drive future progress in the resource-based view.

  • Does the CEO effect on performance differ in private versus public firms?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Strategic Organization. - : Sage Publications. - 1476-1270 .- 1741-315X. ; 20:3, s. 652-673
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Scholars have long debated the effect CEOs have on firm performance, including a focus on how their effect shifts across industries, national settings, and time. Unexplored, however, is the possibility that the CEO effect might differ in publicly traded versus privately held firms. Drawing on a unique longitudinal sample of both publicly traded and large, privately held Swedish firms from 1997 to 2013, we replicate and build upon prior CEO effects studies and find that private-firm CEOs have a greater effect on firm performance, for good or for ill, than do their public firm counterparts. Our results are strengthened after controlling for industry, firm profitability, and size in a matched-pair sample. We discuss the implications and potential future research stemming from these findings.

  • The more the merrier? : The effect of group size on effectiveness in SMEfunding campaigns
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Strategic Organization. - : SAGE. - 1476-1270 .- 1741-315X. ; 8:1, s. 43-68
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To overcome resource shortages, companies can subscribe to groups that, in competition with other groups, seek to obtain external funding for the joint development of innovations. In this context, the authors argue smaller groups are better equipped to be successful in external funding campaigns. Based on five-year panel data from a sample of 53 Swedish groups of small and medium-sized companies, the authors find support for a claim suggesting that due to the adverse effect of group size on governance and internal cohesion, the costs associated with group size will outweigh benefits, which reduce the ability to compete for external funding. Consistent with their expectations, the authors find that the adverse effect of group size on fundraising effectiveness is mitigated by internal and external governance devices including the presence of external directors on the group board and interlocking board memberships, and by a bottom-up group formation process.

  • Exploring the development of heterogeneous contracting capabilities : the role of organizational design
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Strategic Organization. - 1476-1270. ; , s. 1-43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research on learning to contract and contracting capabilities suggests that firms in interorganizational relationships adopt contractual designs that economize on transaction costs, and over time learn to govern their relationships in a more efficient manner by incrementally aligning contractual terms with transaction attributes based on new experiences made in their relationships. We augment the learning to contract literature by highlighting the role of organizational design as a factor that may impact contractual learning and the development of heterogeneous contracting capabilities. Specifically, we suggest that the level of specialization and structural integration across the firm’s technical, commercial, and legal functions may affect the effectiveness of contractual learning and the type of learning likely to occur. We also outline boundary conditions for our model in terms of potential interactions between the contractual environment, organizational design, and contractual learning.

  • In utero exposure to ADHD medication and long-term offspring outcomes
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Molecular Psychiatry. - : Springer Nature. - 1359-4184 .- 1476-5578. ; 28:4, s. 1739-1746
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) medication is increasingly being used during pregnancy. Concerns have been raised as to whether ADHD medication has long-term adverse effects on the offspring. The authors investigated whether in utero exposure to ADHD medication was associated with adverse long-term neurodevelopmental and growth outcomes in offspring. The population-based cohort study in the Danish national registers included 1,068,073 liveborn singletons from 1998 to 2015 followed until any developmental diagnosis, death, emigration, or December 31, 2018. Children of mothers who continued ADHD medication (methylphenidate, amphetamine, dexamphetamine, lisdexamphetamine, modafinil, atomoxetine, clonidine) during pregnancy and children of mothers who discontinued ADHD medication before pregnancy were compared using Cox regression. Main outcomes were neurodevelopmental psychiatric disorders, impairments in vision or hearing, epilepsy, seizures, or growth impairment during childhood or adolescence. In total, 898 children were exposed to ADHD medication during pregnancy compared to 1270 children whose mothers discontinued ADHD medication before pregnancy. After adjustment for demographic and psychiatric characteristics of the mother, no increased risk of any offspring developmental disorders was found combined (aHR 0.97, 95% CI 0.81 to 1.17) or for separate subcategories. Similarly, no increased risk was found for any sub-categories of outcomes in the negative control or sibling controlled analyses. Neurodevelopment and growth in offspring do not differ based on antenatal exposure to ADHD medication. These findings provide reassurance for women with ADHD who depend on ADHD medication for daily functioning and who consider continuing medication in pregnancy.
