  • Foundations of cultural design in e-learning
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Internet and Enterprise Management. - 1476-1300 .- 1741-5330. ; 6:2, s. 124-142
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is an attempt to investigate some conceptual underpinnings of cultural dimensions to the design and use of ICT based initiatives in educational settings, particularly in Eastern contexts like Iran, promoting a sociocultural perspective on education, instruction and learning. The article move progressively from clarifying fundamental issues about social and cultural factors on globalizations of education to definitional and operational considerations, and focused on several major issues: Understanding of Culture; Cultural considerations in designing and using ICT in e-learning; Cultural dimensions in E-learning; Characterizing some common traits in Eastern pedagogical cultures. By discussing the challenges and potential opportunities with preference to social and cultural factors in globalization of education, it was pointed that there are certain context-specific social and cultural factors indices - as well as educational attainments – that affect the access to and use of its in developing countries. These factors / dimensions must be recognized and analyzed for the E-learning to be properly adapted and developed.

  • Web-Based Digital Shop Floor : Implementation of Business Service Management and Managerial Implications
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Internet and Enterprise Management. - 1476-1300 .- 1741-5330. ; 5:1, s. 78-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, a web-based collaborative framework called Wise-ShopFloor (Web-based integrated sensor-driven e-ShopFloor) is proposed. With appropriate open architecture for effective collaboration among a dispersed engineering team, the Wise-ShopFloor can serve real-time data from bottom up and can function as a constituent component of e-manufacturing for remote monitoring and control. This paper presents the basis of the framework for building web-based collaborative systems that can be used for distributed manufacturing. A proof-of-concept prototype system is developed on top of the framework to demonstrate one of its potential applications on shop floor monitoring and control.

  • The entrepreneurial university's influence on commercialisation of academic research : The illustrative case of Chalmers University of Technology
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - Olney : InderScience Publishers. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054. ; 12:4, s. 429-444
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to describe how the development of an entrepreneurial university contributes to the commercialisation of research. This is illustrated with the case of Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. The findings show the importance of early pioneers creating a favourable culture from the very beginning of the university’s existence. It also shows the influence of a few key individuals for the developed best practice in the innovation support system, which is to commercialise research by match-making researchers with complementing competences like entrepreneurship students as well as using alumni.

  • Climate as a risk factor for armed conflict
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 571:7764, s. 193-197
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research findings on the relationship between climate and conflict are diverse and contested. Here we assess the current understanding of the relationship between climate and conflict, based on the structured judgments of experts from diverse disciplines. These experts agree that climate has affected organized armed conflict within countries. However, other drivers, such as low socioeconomic development and low capabilities of the state, are judged to be substantially more influential, and the mechanisms of climate–conflict linkages remain a key uncertainty. Intensifying climate change is estimated to increase future risks of conflict.

  • Salutogenesis and Resilience : two sides of the same coin?
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Psychology and Health. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0887-0446 .- 1476-8321. ; 27:Suppl1, s. 41-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Conceptual clarification of salutogenesis (Antonovsky 1987) and resilience – what is common and different? Methods: A systematic research synthesis 1992–2010 based on about 1300 papers on Sense of Coherence. Findings: Similarities and differences emerge. Salutogenesis stems from stress research exploring why some people stay healthy despite major life events and adversities while resilience research refer to risk of negative health development. Both concepts emphasize resources: the salutogenic framework talks about Generalized Resistance Resources while resilience uses protective factors. The two concepts differ when it comes to the adjustment process where resilience concept always is connected with risk factors. Discussion: The new knowledge derived from the research synthesis on the SOC reveal promising results indicating the usefulness in health promotion research, expanding the knowledge from resilience research on risks to salutogenic research on resources. While salutogenesis has its focus on health promotion resilience is more connected to health protection.

  • Exosome-mediated transfer of mRNAs and microRNAs is a novel mechanism of genetic exchange between cells.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nature cell biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1465-7392 .- 1476-4679. ; 9:6, s. 654-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exosomes are vesicles of endocytic origin released by many cells. These vesicles can mediate communication between cells, facilitating processes such as antigen presentation. Here, we show that exosomes from a mouse and a human mast cell line (MC/9 and HMC-1, respectively), as well as primary bone marrow-derived mouse mast cells, contain RNA. Microarray assessments revealed the presence of mRNA from approximately 1300 genes, many of which are not present in the cytoplasm of the donor cell. In vitro translation proved that the exosome mRNAs were functional. Quality control RNA analysis of total RNA derived from exosomes also revealed presence of small RNAs, including microRNAs. The RNA from mast cell exosomes is transferable to other mouse and human mast cells. After transfer of mouse exosomal RNA to human mast cells, new mouse proteins were found in the recipient cells, indicating that transferred exosomal mRNA can be translated after entering another cell. In summary, we show that exosomes contain both mRNA and microRNA, which can be delivered to another cell, and can be functional in this new location. We propose that this RNA is called "exosomal shuttle RNA" (esRNA).

  • Saliva cortisol in relation to aircraft noise exposure : pooled-analysis results from seven European countries
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Environmental Health. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-069X. ; 18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Many studies have demonstrated adverse effects of exposure to aircraft noise on health. Possible biological pathways for these effects include hormonal disturbances. Few studies deal with aircraft noise effects on saliva cortisol in adults, and results are inconsistent. Objective: We aimed to assess the effects of aircraft noise exposure on saliva cortisol levels and its variation in people living near airports. Methods: This study focused on the 1300 residents included in the HYENA and DEBATS cross-sectional studies, with complete information on cortisol sampling. All the participants followed a similar procedure aiming to collect both a morning and an evening saliva cortisol samples. Socioeconomic and lifestyle information were obtained during a face-to-face interview. Outdoor aircraft noise exposure was estimated for each participant's home address. Associations between aircraft noise exposure and cortisol outcomes were investigated a priori for male and female separately, using linear regression models adjusted for relevant confounders. Different approaches were used to characterize cortisol levels, such as morning and evening cortisol concentrations and the absolute and relative variations between morning and evening levels. Results: Statistically significant increases of evening cortisol levels were shown in women with a 10-dB(A) increase in aircraft noise exposure in terms of LA(eq, 16h) (exp(beta) = 1.08; CI95% = 1.00-1.16), L-den (exp(beta) = 1.09; CI95% = 1.01-1.18), L-night (exp(beta) = 1.11; CI95% = 1.02-1.20). A statistically significant association was also found in women between a 10-dB(A) increase in terms of L-night and the absolute variation per hour (exp(beta) = 0.90; CI95% = 0.80-1.00). Statistically significant decreases in relative variation per hour were also evidenced in women, with stronger effects with the L-night (exp(beta) = 0.89; CI95% = 0.83-0.96) than with other noise indicators. The morning cortisol levels were unchanged whatever noise exposure indicator considered. There was no statistically significant association between aircraft noise exposure and cortisol outcomes in men. Conclusions: The results of the present study show statistically significant associations between aircraft noise exposure and evening cortisol levels and related flattening in the (absolute and relative) variations per hour in women. Further biological research is needed to deepen knowledge of the pathway between noise exposure and disturbed hormonal regulation, and specially the difference in effects between genders.
