On top of the world : Mapping the Nordic crime fiction boom based on translation data

- Nordic Noir – crime fiction originating in the Nordic region – is one of the most significant international publishing success stories of the twenty-first century. Despite its importance, no one has mapped and analysed the circulation of Nordic Noir as world literature. The present study addresses this knowledge gap by quantitatively mapping the global translation flows of Nordic Noir during the period of its greatest international success, from 2000 to 2020. Drawing on the “Nordic Noir in Translation Database” containing 8,886 translations from all five main Nordic languages – Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish – this study is the first to chart the so-called “boom” in a comparative macro perspective, bringing to light the nuances of its international dissemination and impact. Key findings relate to the chronological structure of the boom, the scale of Swedish dominance and the role of a small group of top authors in driving overall translation rates.

- The sexological aspects of Proust’s work have largely been neglected in its Chinese reception. The paper focuses on the Chinese (re)translations of Proust’s sexual discourses in À la recherche du temps perdu and expounds the epistemic challenges and the evolving strategies of translating sadomasochism and homosexuality into Chinese. It further explores how these observations refract the changing and largely de-pathologizing discourses on, and social attitudes to, sadomasochism and homosexuality in China from the late 1980s until now. A close examination of exemplary passages (from Du côté de chez Swann, Sodome et Gomorrhe, La Prisonnière, and Le Temps retrouvé) in different Chinese translations will reveal a lexical and conceptual appropriation and recontextualization of modern Western as well as traditional Chinese discourses on/of sexology.

On methodology : How mixed methods research can contribute to translation studies

- This paper explores mixed methods research as a methodological approach integrating 1) philosophical and conceptual stances, 2) inquiry logics and 3) research methods. It is found to be pluralistic in that researchers may approach all three domains in a variety of ways, and eclectic in that any combination of data, methods and theories may be justified provided the research design is internally coherent, integrative and offers the best possibility of answering the research question. A brief overview of methodological writings in translation studies and an investigation of 10 sample theses indicate that theories and methods are often combined and adapted in the discipline, though usually without drawing on mixed methods research. It is argued that mixed methods research offers a methodological framework that is well attuned to contemporary translation studies research, not least by promoting interactive research design and providing a way to bridge the gap between different research traditions.

- Recently, scholars have pointed to the need for exploring non-retranslations, i.e. translations that are continuously being published in a target culture but not retranslated. Yet, there has not been a thorough examination of the phenomenon to date. This article aims to explore this phenomenon in greater depth by reporting on a pilot study from a bibliography on Swedish non-retranslations. More specifically, the article investigates the concept of (alleged) ageing in relation to fourteen Swedish non-retranslations that have been published, in the same translation, in more than ten editions over the course of 45–87 years. The non-retranslations are discussed through the parameters of publication history, agents of non-retranslations, and textual features. The article’s findings contradict some established views regarding the (alleged) ageing of texts as a motive for retranslation and complement others.
