  • The relationship development aspect of production transfer
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. - : Pergamon Press. - 1478-4092 .- 1873-6505. ; 22:1, s. 53-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Production transfers are a result of outsourcing and offshoring decisions. Because of the strategic focus of the outsourcing literature, the operational issues of relationship development between sender and receiver and its impact on the transfer progress have not been fully depicted. The purpose of the present paper is to explore relationship development during production transfer. To fulfil this purpose, we studied three different production transfers and derived four propositions for further testing. Our main conclusions included that dependence and power gradually shift between the sender and the receiver and that the relationship between them sets the arena for what types of relationships can be developed between the receiver and the suppliers. Furthermore, short social distances can bridge cultural and technological distances to some extent, because it motivates the actors to bring their relationship into a more developed state. Finally, we noticed that the headquarters’ involvement can work both as an inhibitor as well as a converter.

  • The purchasing market entry process—A study of 10 Swedish industrial small and medium-sized enterprises
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 1873-6505 .- 1478-4092. ; 12:4, s. 182-196
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While an area of importance and concern to managers, international purchasing remains an under researched phenomenon, especially in the context of small and medium-sized firms. Therefore, this article presents a study of the international purchasing market entry processes of 10 industrial SMEs. The findings indicate that managers of SMEs are often reluctant to source abroad. Purchasing markets entries are generally more reactive than proactive, occurring as a consequence of needs for certain products that cannot be found domestically, high domestic costs, unsolicited opportunities and pressures from owners and customers. Nearby purchasing markets typically dominate throughout the process unless cost savings motivate firms to explore more remote markets.

  • Towards a managerially useful approach to classifying services
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. - : Elsevier. - 1478-4092. ; 21:2, s. 113-124
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The topic of service classification has received extensive scholarly attention. The efforts put in have resulted in a wide array of service classifications. At the same time, there has been little discussion of similarities and differences between classifications. Furthermore, use of individual classifications in practice, like for example in service procurement training programs, usually demonstrates that single classifications do not sufficiently capture all relevant aspects of service procurement. We conducted a systematic review of 88 articles on service classification published between 1964 and 2013, with the objective of developing a comprehensive, managerially useful service classification. Careful analysis of 50 identified classifications suggest that in particular the following four service classification attributes provide meaningful insights: (1) the way the service is used; (2) the extent of customer contact; (3) the degree of participation/interaction; and (4) the degree of customization. As a first attempt at validating the resulting classification scheme, we compared it with classification schemes emerging from training sessions with over 300 purchasing managers. These purchasing managers indicate that starting from how the service is being used already provides them with useful insights over their current classifications, based on for example the portfolio of Kraljic. According to them, adding the other segmentation attributes provides an even deeper understanding of the type of activity patterns involved, boundary-spanning roles, et cetera. We conclude that purchasing managers that collectively use the four service segmentation attributes mentioned here may obtain a more complete overview of key managerial issues in the procurement and subsequent management of business services.

  • Tender evaluation and supplier selection methods in public procurement
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. - Oxford : Elsevier. - 1478-4092 .- 1873-6505. ; 19:2, s. 73-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The EU procurement directives stipulate that public contracts be awarded to the lowest bidder or to the bidder with the economically most advantageous tender; the latter requiring that a scoring rule be specified. We provide a simple theoretical framework, based on standard microeconomic theory, for tender evaluation (scoring and weighing) and discuss the pros and cons of methods such as highest quality (beauty contest), lowest price and price-and-quality-based evaluations. We argue that the most common method, price-to-quality scoring, is inappropriate for several reasons. It is non-transparent, making accurate representation of the procurer's preferences difficult. It is often open to strategic manipulation, due to dependence on irrelevant alternatives, and it tends to impose particular and unjustified non-linearity in bid prices. The alternative quality-to-price scoring method, where money values are assigned to different quality levels, is a better alternative. However, when the cost of quality is relatively well-known and several providers can offer optimal quality lowest price is the preferable award criteria, while beauty contests may be preferred when purchasing budgets are inflexible.

  • Low power, high ambitions : New ventures developing their first supply chains
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. - : Elsevier. - 1478-4092 .- 1873-6505. ; 27:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates sourcing decisions for new ventures. Sourcing decisions are especially problematic for start-ups because they lack resources, knowledge and legitimacy to evaluate and interact with suppliers. We develop and apply a framework that connects global sourcing, relationship development and attractiveness. Further, we investigate how new ventures develop their first supply chains by conducting an exploratory mul-tiple case study of six Norwegian start-ups. Based on our findings, we develop three propositions regarding how start-ups mediate their lack of attractiveness through pre-sales and by choosing shorter supply chains and smaller suppliers. The implications for practice include emphasizing the importance of developing a business relation-ship with the supplier in parallel with making sourcing decisions. This study is a novel contribution to an underexplored topic, and we conclude by proposing a research agenda for future explorations of start-ups and supply chain development.

  • Influence from the business environment on environmental purchasing - Drivers and hinders of purchasing green transportation services
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. - : Elsevier. - 1478-4092 .- 1873-6505. ; 17:1, s. 11-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Awareness of the business environment in which a company operates is important for its success in purchasing. Consideration to the natural environment is increasingly important for long-term success of purchasing. A mail survey is used to investigate the character of different factors that can influence the environmental purchasing of transportation services. Factor analysis suggests that the factors can, to a large extent, be grouped according to actors involved. The largest factors regard the internal management, image, resources of the firm, customer demands, carriers and governmental means of control. Most factors work as drivers. Some differences have been identified when comparing the surrounding environment of the environmental purchasing of transportation services and the surrounding environment commonly described in the more general purchasing and environmental management literature. The uniqueness of this study can be found in the large number of contingency factors considered, the focus on purchase of transportation services, as well as in the Swedish context in which the study has been conducted.

  • Partnering relationships in construction: A literature review
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 1478-4092. ; 16:4, s. 239-253
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is no unified view as to what partnering relationships are in the construction industry. The purpose of this paper is to examine the literature in order to identify the main assumptions about partnering relationships in construction research and practice. The literature is compared to the Construction Industry Institute's (CII, 1991) frequently cited definition of partnering as a long-term commitment between two or more parties in which shared understanding and trust develop for the benefits of improving construction. The literature review reveals a tendency to focus on project partnering in dyads between clients and contractors and there is also an emphasis on formal tools to develop these relationships, even if social aspects and relationship dynamics are recognised. The paper discusses these findings and suggests that, in order to increase the understanding of the substance and function of partnering relationships, it could be useful to incorporate knowledge from theoretical perspectives that are more in line with the CII definition. Two perspectives that seem particularly interesting in this respect are Supply Chain Management (SCM) and the Industrial Network Approach (INA), both of which focus on long-term relationships between actors beyond the dyad. INA also emphasises the informal aspects of relationship development. Incorporating these dimensions of partnering relationships requires processual and longitudinal studies, which are relatively rare in the contemporary partnering literature. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. • Engaged Scholar(ship) in purchasing and supply management (PSM): Creative tension or squeezed in the middle?
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 1478-4092 .- 1873-6505. ; 25:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purchasing and supply management research influences practice through the advancement of knowledge and theoretical principles and is positioned as an academic discipline. For the individual researcher, it calls for skills and experience that can be associated with engaged scholarship. This paper explores tensions inherent in engaged scholarship, that arise during the quest to interact closely with professionals to ensure relevance and impact while living up to research quality criteria. The paper concludes that the individual researcher in a field such as PSM is easily left with guidelines that point in multiple directions regarding personal achievement and institutional merits.
