  • The synergistic role of embeddedness and capabilities in industrial symbiosis: illustration based upon 12 years of experiences in the Rotterdam Harbour and Industry Complex
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Progress in Industrial Ecology, An International Journal. - 1476-8917 .- 1478-8764. ; 5:5-6, s. 399-421
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Industrial Ecology (IE) is a known concept worldwide; however, its dissemination is not an easy process. Industrial routines are embedded in unsustainable practices that are difficult to change. The complexity and uncertainties of new concepts are often approached with ignorance and misperception. Nevertheless, the integration of economic, environmental and social dimensions in industrial activities is increasingly perceived as a necessary condition for a sustainable society. The paper reflects on the theories of embeddedness, capabilities and transformation to practical experiences of Industrial Symbiosis (IS) in the Rotterdam Harbour and Industry Complex (HIC).

  • Does organising matter? Tracing connections to environmental impacts in different housing estates.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Progress in Industrial Ecology. - 1478-8764 .- 1476-8917. ; 6:2, s. 120-134
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Much of the research on buildings and the environment is of a technical-economic nature. But so far, this has not led to any great changes in practice. This article brings organising into the research agenda: Does organising matter for the environmental performance of buildings? If so, how? This question is investigated by a comparative analysis based on an empirical approach. Two housing management practices and their buildings' energy and water performances are analysed relative to each other. It is possible to trace energy and water consumption levels to characteristic management styles (e.g., metaphors of 'caring' and 'emergency-driven'). The analysis shows that organising concepts, more specifically, characteristic management styles, matter for the environment. Copyright © 2009 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

  • Environmental impact from a sector: Production and consumption of energy carriers in Sweden
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Progress in Industrial Ecology, An International Journal. - 1476-8917 .- 1478-8764. ; 3:5, s. 451-470
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Environmental impacts from the Swedish energy sector, including upstream and downstream effects, were investigated using a hybrid IOA-LCA method. Use of abiotic resources, climate change, air pollution and toxic effects were identified as environmental hotspots in the sector. On the production side, power, gas and heat production were found to cause many environmental effects, but impacts abroad from imported energy carriers, mainly oil, also contributed significantly to total impact. However, impacts from use of energy carriers overshadowed impacts from their production, and the cumulative impact from many small users of energy carriers was shown to be as important as emissions from large industries. The assessment provides a basis for sector policymakers and shows, e.g., the importance of not focusing solely on climate change, and the significance of including upstream and downstream effects.

  • How to formulate and realise a corporate sustainability strategy
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Progress in Industrial Ecology, An International Journal. - 1476-8917 .- 1478-8764. ; 4:1-2, s. 103-121
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The main aim of this study is to develop, test and implement a working method for the graphic arts industry to formulate and realise a corporate sustainability strategy. This study is based on the case studies of two companies in the supply chain for printed products. The working method is inspired by the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) methodology in ISO 14001 and the SWOT methodology. The working method established and successfully tested consists of six stages. The initial stages include an analysis of the current business climate in society and in the company, an identification of the significant sustainability aspects and a formulation of a shared vision. Examples of a sustainability strategy, long-term objectives, short-term targets, activities in working programmes and indicators are given. The results contribute to the process of bringing the thoughts of conceptual sustainability into practice in industrial applications.

  • Connectedness and its dynamics in the Swedish biofuels for transport industry
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Progress in Industrial Ecology, An International Journal. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1476-8917 .- 1478-8764. ; 9:3, s. 269-295
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Connectedness through cooperation with other sectors regarding feedstock, energy, products and by-products is important for environmental performance of industrial production. The aim of this study is to provide a better understanding of the level of connectedness in the Swedish biofuels for transport industry, involving producers of ethanol, biogas and biodiesel. In interviews, the CEOs of four important companies provided information about current strategies, historic and planned development. The production systems are dynamic and have changed significantly over time, including material and energy exchanges between traditionally separate industries. Interesting development was noted where revised business strategies have led to changed cooperation structures and thus altered material and energy flows. Fuel and raw material prices are very influential and all of the respondents said that political decisions to a large extent affect their competitiveness and emphasised the importance of clear long-term institutional conditions, ironically very much in contrast to the current situation within EU and Sweden.

  • The diffusion of green innovation technology in the construction industry : European passive house knowledge transfer to China
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Progress in Industrial Ecology, An International Journal. - Olney : InderScience Publishers. - 1476-8917 .- 1478-8764. ; 11:2, s. 164-181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The booming Chinese construction market has created both economic growth and environmental problems. Some 65 000 buildings in Europe have been constructed in accordance with the voluntary construction standard called Passive House that aims for energy efficiency. In China, however, by 2015, only twenty such projects were planned and only two Passive House projects were completed. In this paper we identify and describe the barriers to the diffusion and adoption of Passive House construction in China. We review the relevant literature (Chinese and Western) and conduct two case studies of Passive House construction in China. Two broad groups of barriers the bounded rationality of construction developers/managers and the high transaction costs of green innovation are found to be most responsible for the slow diffusion and adoption of the Passive House concept in China. Unless these barriers are overcome, prospects for the advance of green technology in the Chinese construction market are unfavourable. © 2017 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

  • The Janus face of sustainable foreign direct investments
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Progress in Industrial Ecology, An International Journal. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1476-8917 .- 1478-8764. ; 5:3, s. 198-212
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we take a critical perspective on the phenomenon known as Sustainable Foreign Direct Investments (SFDIs). With the pulp and paper sector in Latin America as an illustrative example, we examine how the behaviour of firms is constrained by societal norms and how the greenness and sense of responsibility is constructed within SFDIs. Because of the lack of generally approved metrics for defining SFDIs and the ambiguity of the concept of sustainability, we argue that there are seldom rational arguments for far-going optimism, as far as SFDIs are concerned. We find that greenness and responsibility manifest themselves to no greater extent in SFDIs than in other business contexts. We suggest that the most important and urgent task is to increase the transparency of Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) and to continue to develop international standards and to metrics that could be used to reliably determine the sustainability of these investments. • Preservative-treated sawn timber in Sweden : Waste beyond control
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Progress in Industrial Ecology, An International Journal. - 1476-8917 .- 1478-8764. ; 3:5, s. 471-486
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wood preservatives contain hazardous substances that cause environmental implications during waste management. The objective of this study was to analyse the waste management of preservative-treated sawn timber in Sweden from a pollution perspective and in regard to the present waste policy. Firstly, the generation of waste was modelled and then the methods of disposal were analysed from direct inquiries to waste facilities and from mass balance considerations. The results show that the discarded amount of preservative-treated sawn timber has increased and today exceeds 150 000 tonnes per year. This waste generation will continue for many years and will contain several thousand tonnes of arsenic and chromium. According to the Swedish Waste Decree, preservative-treated sawn timber is to be separately handled as hazardous waste. At present, however, most of the waste unintentionally becomes dispersed in non-hazardous waste, making it difficult to control the outflows of hazardous substances from preservative-treated sawn timber.
