  • Gender and arson : psychosocial, psychological, and somatic offender characteristics at the time of the crime
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Forensic Psychiatry & Psychology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1478-9949 .- 1478-9957. ; 34:1, s. 113-130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Deliberate fire-setting, such as the crime of arson, can have devastating, even lethal, consequences. This study compared factors at the time of arson by female and male offenders in Sweden between 2000–2010. The women (n = 100), and men (n = 100) included in this study were randomly chosen from among all individuals who had been convicted for arson during this period and who underwent forensic psychiatric investigations. Information regarding psychiatric and somatic characteristics, their psychosocial situation, and whether they were in contact with health or social services before the arsons were examined. The results showed that both women and men have complex psychiatric and somatic characteristics, as well as psychosocial situations. Women showed more self-destructive behaviour, lower Global Assessment of Functioning scores, and had been in contact with psychiatric health services to a greater extent than men. More women than men had children. These findings suggest that specific actions may be needed for preventing and treating women compared with men at risk for committing arson.

  • Patient and staff perceptions of the ward atmosphere in a Swedish maximum-security forensic psychiatric hospital
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Forensic Psychiatry & Psychology. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1478-9949 .- 1478-9957. ; 16:2, s. 263-276
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The main aim of the study was to describe and compare the patient and staff perceptions of the ward atmosphere of a maximum-security forensic psychiatric hospital in southern Sweden. The main instrument used, the Ward Atmosphere Scale (WAS), was administered to both patients and staff on the eight wards of the hospital, where there was a total of 82 beds. The hospital has a regional responsibility for maximum-security forensic psychiatric care in southern Sweden. Forty-eight per cent of the patients and 82% of the staff consented to participate in the study. The results of the study showed that the patients rated intermediate levels of all the 10 subscales of WAS with the lowest mean scores for Autonomy and Involvement and the highest mean scores for Programme Clarity and Order and Organization. The staff, however, rated a low level of Staff Control and high levels of Programme Clarity, Practical Orientation and Support. The staff and patient perceptions differed on eight of the 10 WAS subscales with only Personal Problem Orientation and Anger and Aggression being rated at similar levels. The results are considered in the light of the limited available literature in the field. Furthermore, the differences between the perceptions of the two groups as well as the clinical implications of these differences are discussed.

  • Blame attribution and guilt feelings in violent offenders
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Forensic Psychiatry & Psychology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1478-9957 .- 1478-9949. ; 25:2, s. 212-223
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Offenders with high psychopathic traits and/or antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) are hypothesised to experience less guilt and less responsibility for their actions than offenders without these problems. These hypotheses were tested and partly substantiated. The study investigates blame attributions and guilt feeling using Gudjonsson Blame Attribution Inventory-Revised (GBAI-R) for 177 young male violent offenders. GBAI scores were compared to ASPD and psychopathy according to the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised. Results showed that individuals with ASPD and those with higher degrees of psychopathy tended to report significantly less guilt and higher degree of mental control than other subjects. Another finding was a weak relationship between ASPD, high scores on psychopathic traits and external attribution. We suggest these results might be explained by admitting poor mental control may be extra difficult for individuals belonging to either of these groups and that the external attribution items do not separate causal from moral responsibility.

  • Intra- and extra-familial child sexual abusers and recidivism in Sweden: A 10- to 15-year follow-up study
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Forensic Psychiatry & Psychology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1478-9949 .- 1478-9957. ; 25:3, s. 341-361
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rates of recidivism and types of recidivist crime have varied greatly in follow-up studies of child sexual abusers. In this long-term study of a population-based cohort (n = 193) and a nationwide clinic-referred study group (n = 166) of child sexual abusers, rates of recidivism and associations between index descriptors and outcomes were compared between intra-familial offenders and extra-familial offenders. Overall, 9.8% relapsed into sexual offence, 12.4% relapsed into violence and 2.6% relapsed into both types of offences in the population-based cohort. Corresponding numbers for the clinic-referred group were 13.9, 10.8 and 4.2%. Extra-familial offenders at index were significantly more likely to relapse into both sexual and violent criminality than intra-familial offenders, but no differences were found in rates of hands-off and hands-on crimes. Analysis of receiver operating characteristics showed that age at first conviction predicted sexual, violent and any criminality, with areas under the curve ranging from .67 to .80.

  • Victim relations and factors triggering homicides committed by offenders with schizophrenia
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Forensic Psychiatry & Psychology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1478-9949 .- 1478-9957. ; 17:2, s. 192-203
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Western countries about 10 - 15% of those convicted of homicide suffer from a psychotic disorder. Victims are most often from the offender's immediate network, such as family members and friends. Delusions and/or hallucinations have an important role in violent behaviour, as does coexistent alcohol or drug abuse. In this study, all 48 homicides from 1992 - 2000 committed by offenders in Sweden diagnosed with schizophrenia were studied in order to identify possibly triggering factors related to victim relations. Nine of the 52 victims were strangers to the offender. In 54% of cases, the homicides were associated with obvious delusions and/or hallucinations. Among offenders with family victims 72% suffered from obvious delusions and/or hallucinations, as compared to 43% of offenders with non-family victims. Of the offenders, 79% were known to psychiatric services, but at the time of the crime only 33% had any ongoing contact. Despite 48% having been prescribed antipsychotic drugs, no more than two individuals were actually taking their medication. The offenders who had killed members of their biological families were seldom intoxicated and few had earlier convictions for violent crime. The mental health care services have a major responsibility to prevent homicides and violent crimes being committed by those with schizophrenia.
