  • The Swedish Middle Way and UN Experiences in Domestic Politics : Exploring International Welfare Feminism during Early Cold War Years
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: NORA. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0803-8740 .- 1502-394X. ; 30:1, s. 20-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper distinguishes Swedish feminist internationalists in the early Cold War years appointed to high positions at the United Nations (UN) whose political commitments were connected to pluralism, democracy, and a solidarity with the poor. Alva Myrdal, Agda Rössel, and Ulla Lindström were three Swedish women appointed some of the highest positions attained by women in the UN in the late 1940s and 1950s. Their stance on the interrelatedness of women’s political and economic rights is in this paper read as characteristic of the Swedish Middle Way. A special focus in the paper is on the parliamentarian debates regarding the Swedish Middle Way in which Ulla Lindström expounded on her experiences from her work as delegate to the UN. Human rights actualized by feminist internationalists included equal pay for women supported by working unions, preschool and day-care facilities for working mothers, as well as social security and social services for families in poverty, but the high-ranking positions of these women at the UN were questioned both domestically and within the UN.

  • A Gender Perspective on Teachers as Crisis Managers
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: NORA. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0803-8740 .- 1502-394X. ; 27:2, s. 5-138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stressful conditions affect communities at different levels and may involve occupational groups not normally associated with issues of crisis and security. Teachers in the compulsory school system are members of such a group. The purpose of this study is to examine teachers’ view of their own role as crisis management actors in a female-dominated occupation. A Grounded Theory approach applying a gender perspective was used as an analytical tool for data processing. In total, 16 informants from four different schools in two different municipalities in Sweden were interviewed. The analysis of these interviews shows that teachers’ perceptions of risk, crisis, and security are influenced and characterized by social and emotional regulation aimed at (a) reducing vulnerability, (b) increasing the sense of security, and (c) regaining or restoring a sense of order and control. These strategies have been discussed froma gender perspective as teachers do not regard themselves as legitimate crisis management actors.

  • A Gender Perspective on Temporary Organisations in Crisis Management
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: NORA. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0803-8740 .- 1502-394X. ; 28:4, s. 273-286
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to examine, explain and interpret concepts of gender in relation to information management, crisis communication and collaboration within the framework of (crisis) communicator tasks. Since the crisis management realm is malecoded and the communications profession is female-coded, there is reason to gain more knowledge of how these relate to each other. The ambition is to contribute to an underdeveloped area of theory. A total of nineteen participants joined the study. All the interviews were processed according to the guidelines for the thematic analysis method. Analysis showed that three themes are central to understanding the role of communicators in the crisis management system. These are a) crisis communication as a temporary organization; b) requirements imposed on, and expectations from, the role and the individual and c) organizational greed. Results are discussed theoretically from a gender perspective, and practical implications are given as well as proposals for further studies.

  • Paradoxes of gender in elderly care : the case of men as care workers in Sweden
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: NORA. - London, Taylor & Francis, Routledge : Informa UK Limited. - 0803-8740 .- 1502-394X. ; 30:3, s. 166-181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish public system of elderly care is highly relevant for studying gender relations, specifically when male care workers are more frequently seen within this female-coded field of practice. In this article, qualitative interviews with male and female care workers, elderly women and men, and care managers are analysed to discover how they talk about care work and how gender is expressed, both implicitly and explicitly, in the materialization of care. By illuminating the dynamics of how gender is constructed and negotiated in the intersection of the different actors' perspectives, the paradoxes of gender appeared. The care workers' moral responsibility seemed to undermine equality between male and female care workers, and the elderly clients' gendered expectations and representations created inequality in care work. Furthermore, the gender-neutral assessments made by the care managers came to favour elderly men. Thus, the results suggest the importance of capturing the different perspectives in society's institutions, such as elderly care, in order to understand the complexities of gendered processes.

  • The Question of Feminism in Gender Mainstreaming : A Case of Non-conflict in Local Politics
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: NORA. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0803-8740 .- 1502-394X. ; 23:3, s. 203-219
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses gender equality and how and why a gender mainstreaming strategy avoids the question of gender conflict. The making of gender-equality work is studied by investigating how feminism is talked about and rejected in a specific gender mainstreaming project in the municipality of Örebro, Sweden. Drawing upon the theoretical concepts of hegemony and discourse, the focus is on the silences—the unspoken questions and problems—surrounding the project. I examine how the exclusion of feminism and conflict is articulated when gender mainstreaming is introduced as a new way of doing gender-equality work in the municipality. The struggles identified show that feminism is rejected because it is seen as being in opposition to (1) professionalism and (2) legitimate political issues. I conclude that within the local discourse of gender mainstreaming there is a notion that this form of gender-equality work ought to be performed without harmful or threatening gender conflicts. This means that the strategy of gender mainstreaming constitutes a short-cut to bypass controversial problems like equal treatment, special efforts for women, and men's privileges in gender-equality work.

  • From glass ceiling to firewalls : Detecting and changing gendered organizational norms
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: NORA. - : Routledge. - 0803-8740 .- 1502-394X. ; 30:2, s. 140-153
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is based on an empirical case study with an interactive research approach focusing on gendered norms in a Swedish truck Company. It discusses the combined value of using the metaphor of a firewall for (1) analysing how organizational constraining gendered norms are done in everyday organizational life, and (2) as a practical tool to facilitate the processes aimed at improving norm awareness. The metaphor embodies an understanding that makes it possible to visualize relational ongoing organizational processes and power dimensions. In addition, the firewall is useful for emphasizing variations and complexity. Variations and dynamics are manifested in the ways that employees need to fulfil varying “codes” in order to be accepted. The possession of certain codes (norms) that are required to pass through the first layer of the firewall (employment), and give access to some networks, does not automatically ensure acceptance and integration into more influential networks (referred to as the informal and inner layers of the firewall). The results furthermore show that the firewall metaphor is fruitful when facilitating reflection processes amongst employees to improve norma wareness and to discuss strategies for change. The conclusion is that the firewall metaphor facilitates an analysis of the relational and complex doing of constraining norms, and that it also can be used to initiate change.

  • Vulnerability, agency and the ambivalence of place in narratives of rape in three high-profile Swedish cases
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: NORA - Nordic Journal of Feminist and Gender Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0803-8740 .- 1502-394X. ; 26:3, s. 197-209
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For decades, the media have frequently been instrumental in framing rape cases by linking the deed with the place. This study demonstrates that law courts are not innocent of such social framing; on the contrary, they are significant agents. We argue that courts, by shaping the plot in rape cases, participate in an ongoing cultural production of meaning, although in a more subtle and ambivalent way than the media. In a narrative analysis of three contemporary rape cases in Sweden, we bring together feminist research on place with the concepts of vulnerability and agency. We argue that place is framed as ambivalent in relation to vulnerability and agency and dependent on the positioning of the plaintiff and the defendant. In court narratives geographical places are made relevant, including the locations where the alleged rapes took place. Court narratives of rape include highly ambivalent connotations to place in relation to vulnerability and agency, distinguished by different narratives and outcomes in the various instances. The legal and social implications of our work should include an awareness of the relevance of place in relation to rape.

  • For Men, by Men? Women's Business Activities in the Pornographic Press Compared to the Overall Publishing Industry in Sweden 1950–1972
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: NORA. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0803-8740 .- 1502-394X. ; 21:1, s. 21-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on women’s business positions in Swedish porn publishing from the 1950s to the 1970s, i.e. when pornography was legalized and when sexually explicit magazines made their commercial breakthrough. The research draws on statistical information on women’s entrepreneurial roles in the overall publishing industry, which is then compared with women’s agency in porn publishing. According to the findings, women seem to have had a slightly more central role in pornography than within the mainstream publishing industry. The analysis is also expanded with details about a few key female pornography entrepreneurs, tracing their publications and business strategies connected to the Freedom of the Press legislation. It is argued that women’s presence in pornographic print and in the overall publishing industry were in fact similar, with a high ratio of family businesses. Women’s entrepreneurship in pornography thus followed a more general historical pattern whereby women engaged in small-scale business with relatively low barriers to entry.

  • In Public and/or in Print? Women as Literary Critics in Sweden 1820-1850
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: NORA - Nordic Journal of Feminist and Gender Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0803-8740 .- 1502-394X. ; 16:1, s. 33-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Why are there no female literary critics visible in Sweden in the early nineteenth century? Perhaps available statistics and historiography of the press do not present the whole picture? This article discusses professionalization of reviewing in a different light, arguing the necessity of also considering genres other than ones conventionally published. These include letters, diaries, and reading journals, all with their own modes of circulation and address. Together they make visible a number of women’s respective positions in cultural life, especially within the tradition of literary criticism and reviewing. With examples from salon culture as well as novel writing, this paper concludes that criticism cuts through several media and genres and can be quite influential although pursued outside of formal contracts or employments.
