  • Folkfest kring lokalhistoriska betydelser : Kulturarvsbetonade festivaler för främjandet av lokal identitet på postindustriella mindre orter
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Tidsskrift for kulturforskning. - Oslo : Novus Forlag. - 1502-7473 .- 2387-6727. ; 17:2, s. 45-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Celebrating local history – Cultural heritage festivals in post-industrial small towns as prerequisites for local identificationMany minor post-industrial communities in Sweden, such as Surahammar and Timrå, struggle with financial difficulties and socio-cultural challenges due to the industrial decline and increased dependency on immigration from neighboring cities. In the light of this, arranging annual local festivals with a focus on cultural heritage can be seen as an opportunity to strengthen local identity as well as its inhabitant’s coexistences and sense of belonging. This article aims to analyze two local festivals, viewed as platforms for the production, communication and experiences of local cultural heritage values. Empirically resting on data collection and analysis of mainly ethnographic fieldwork, comprising interviews and observations, the article argues that these post-industrial local festivals involves identificational negotiations in regard to both the ritualized communication and implementation of local cultural heritage values. In conclusion, these festivals confirms a clearly industrial linked local cultural heritage but at the same time challenges it through enlargements, sufficiently vigilant connected to a local past in order to allow for inclusive local identifications, regardless of e.g. spatial origins.

  • Monument i historiekulturer : föränderlig mening i klassisk ram
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Tidsskrift for kulturforskning. - 1502-7473 .- 2387-6727. ; 4:1-2, s. 5-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This investigation concerns methodological questions in the study of monuments. How can their meaning be delineated and understood in relationship to a broader historical culture? Three lines of argument are pursued, drawn from my own research and related to discussions in international research. 1) International research has until recently mainly focused heavily on national historical culture and symbols and thereby underestimated the existence of more complex, ambiguous and polysemic uses of monuments where other loyalties and hopes than the national are fostered. 2) From this it follows that monuments ought to be interpreted rather as processes than artefacts. The actual erection of a physical form is only one distinct phase in the making and uses of monuments which are before and after that used for specific and diverging purposes. 3) The context of historical culture has to be appreciated in a wide sense as constituted both by institutional practices, political contexts and ambitions, commercialised settings, mediated narrations and existential needs. Different methodologies developed for the study of monuments tend to focus on either their semantic meaning as pieces of art, their biography as statues and more rarely sees them as processes connected to the wider historical culture. The reason for this is that the amount of knowledge demanded to pursue the recommended line of inquiry rather exceeds the capacity of individual research and implies cooperative design of projects.

  • Framtiden former : Hur genrer formar förståelsen av en klimatförändrad framtid i folkloristiska frågelistsvar
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Tidsskrift for kulturforskning. - Oslo. - 1502-7473 .- 2387-6727. ; 21:1, s. 31-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article applies four different genre labels to an empirical material consisting of responses to qualitative questionnaires on climate change. The basic assumption is that genres shape our understandings of climate change, and accordingly that different genre labels highlight certain features of the texts while obscuring or ignoring others. Beginning with the term survey discourse as a subgenre of climate change narratives, this genre label stresses the underlying narrative structure of the responses, even though they are not narratives in a strict sense. The second term, prophecy or rather the prophetic mode, pinpoints the peculiar double temporality of many responses, resulting in a temporal loop in which the catastrophic future overshadows and partially determines the present while still leaving space for action. The third genre label, apocalypse, is more extreme than the prophetic mode, as its favoured temporality forecloses the possibility of influencing the future in any way. The fourth genre term, polyphonic interior monologue, underlines structural similarities of the responses with the literary interior monologue, and emphasizes their dialogical nature as they acknowledge the existence of other points of view.

  • Naturkatastrofer i menneskets tidsalder : Mot en tverrfaglig forståelse av antropocen-begrepet
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Tidsskrift for kulturforskning. - Oslo. - 1502-7473 .- 2387-6727. ; 13:3, s. 6-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AbstractSince the early 2000, the Anthropocene has gained momentum as a new geological and historical epoch defined by the pervasive human influence on Earth systems. The anthropocene concept is widely used both in the scientific literature and elsewhere. The idea of an Age of Man changes our understanding of the relationship between natural and cultural processes and how different societies are interconnected across time and space. One of the challenging aspects of the anthropocene concept is the consequences for the understanding of natural disasters. Traditionally, natural disasters developed along the nature-society interface where the severity depends on the magnitude of the natural hazard and the human vulnerability. However, within the anthropocene framework, natural hazards can be understood as hybrid processes partly controlled by the human influence on Earth systems. The best examples of such hybrid processes are within the climate-related hazards such as heatwaves and floods.    Keywords: Anthropocene, geological processes, history, natural disasters, cross disciplinary understanding

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Tidsskrift for kulturforskning. - 1502-7473 .- 2387-6727. ; :2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the early 1950’s and early 1960’s Sweden, two Romani men, Karl and Sven, handed in their written life stories to the folklorist Carl-Herman Tillhagen at the Nordic Museum in Stockholm, who added them to the museum archive. Karl identified as “zigenare” (Gypsy, or Kelderash Roma), and Sven as “resande” (Traveller). These life-stories were written in the aftermath of a public debate on “tinkers” containing suggestions such as sterilization, politics of territorial exclusion while the Kelderash Roma to a large extent were still excluded from permanent housing and schools. The narratives are read as an act of “talking back” (Hancock 2010), by the authors to the majority population in a discriminatory and often racist societal climate. The inclusion of the stories in a national archival collection provides an opportunity to see the history of a few members of Romani groups in Sweden from an in-group perspective, in opposition to the otherwise often stereotypical and antigypsyist portrayals of these groups in the archival sphere. The article focuses on how the narrators positioned themselves and which issues they wished to mediate to the supposed majority Swedish readers.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Tidsskrift for kulturforskning. - Oslo : Novus Forlag. - 1502-7473 .- 2387-6727. ; 13:1-2, s. 61-65

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Tidsskrift for kulturforskning. - Oslo : Novus Forlag. - 1502-7473 .- 2387-6727. ; 17:1, s. 73-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article I examine Norwegian lay people’s attitudes towards vaccination with the 2009–2010 swine flu pandemic as a case study. During the pandemic the Norwegian public health authorities recommended mass vaccination as a main strategy for preventing infection. Vaccination is at present voluntary in Norway, but almost 45 per cent of the population were vaccinated against swine flu, including 600 000 children. 70 of these children have since developed narcolepsy as a side effect of the swine flu vaccine Pandemrix. Although these cases appear to have had little effect on the vaccine uptake in the public vaccination program which continues to remain high, many Norwegians still express scepticism to new vaccines. By drawing on a rather heated mediatized debate between so-called vaccine supporters- and opponents in 2015, 196 responses to a qualitative questionnaire and interviews with 17 public health stakeholders, the article focuses on lay people’s own thoughts regarding whether to vaccinate or not. In most cases, such reasoning can neither be described as being supportive of nor opposed to vaccination, but rather something in-between, depending on the vaccine in question.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Tidsskrift for kulturforskning. - 1502-7473 .- 2387-6727. ; :2, s. 59-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Requests for personal funeral rituals increase with growing secularization and the indi-vidualization of death. Based on interviews, this article discusses four women’s experi-ences of independently planning and conducting secular memorials and ash disposals. Idiscuss the role of improvisation in the processes surrounding these rituals. Imagination, invention, improvisation, independence and inspiration emerge as characteristic aspectsof their accounts. Due to the atheist beliefs of the deceased, the families have activelydistanced themselves from the Church’s funeral ritual, and undertakers were not con-sidered helpful. To amend this, the relatives assumed responsibility for planning thesecular funerals rather than leaving responsibility to the dominant authorities of death.Arranging memorials and burials without previous experience made the mourners feelinsecure, but they also took pleasure in the creativity of the process, through which theycreated meaningful and deeply personal memorials and ash disposals. The study showshow rituals were (re)created by combining personal details with already establishedfuneral ritual elements, as the mourners both mimicked and actively distanced them-selves from existing ritual forms.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Tidsskrift for kulturforskning. - 1502-7473 .- 2387-6727. ; :1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses narrative and social challenges following development in communication technology. The paper aims to show how Swedish cruising sailors adapt the style and content of their online travel writing, with the interest of different audience groups in mind. How do they manage the sometimes conflicting interests of different audience groups? What is considered un-tellable, and why? The analysis is based on interviews with Swedish cruising sailors and on analysis of primarily four online cruising travelogues. The article combines folkloristic and socio-linguistic perspectives on communicative competence and on immediate or ongoing storytelling, to describe a narrative awareness of the cruisers. As I show, concern for the readers make online travel writing whilst travelling a work-like task. The cruisers develop strategies to write entertaining and exciting stories without worrying family members, and must try to instruct fellow cruisers without boring the non-sailors in the audience. Lastly, the article advocates a combination of online and offline qualitative fieldwork to enable an understanding of online and ongoing storytelling practices, and the social and narrative strategies of people active in social media.
