  • A survey of Swedish work environmental and occupational research during the twentieth century
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing. - 1090-8471 .- 1520-6564. ; 9:4, s. 343-356
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden work environmental and occupational research has established itself as an important part of many scientific disciplines. There is now much to suggest that this period of success is over. We can see a reduction in the number of institutes and resources. In this article Jan Johansson discusses how Swedish work environmental and occupational research has developed during the twentieth century-the matters that have been selected for investigation and the way in which these have influenced institutional structures. What is required now is that researchers again succeed in identifying questions that are felt to be vital by the parties of the labor market.

  • Plant closing : a case study at Volvo and Renault
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing. - 1090-8471 .- 1520-6564. ; 7:3, s. 159-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In autumn 1992 the board of the Volvo concern decided to close down the plants at Kalmar and Uddevalla, the plants that for a long time had reputed Volvo to develop a new Swedish form of work organization within car industry. In this article I analyze the plant closing by the theory of dual industrial structures. I find this theory valuable. It provides a complementary sociological approach to the discussion. I point to the importance of the negotiations going on, at the time, of an amalgamation of Volvo and Renault, as well as of the corporate tradition of Renault, characterized by a Fordistic concept of production.

  • Total Quality Management and Work Organization : Relationsship between TQM and Work Organization in Swedish Industrial Companies
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing. - 1090-8471 .- 1520-6564. ; 8:4, s. 351-366
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the relationship between quality management strategies and changes of work and work organization in industrial companies. Nine case studies in Sweden show that companies whose aim is total quality practice three different quality strategies characterized by detailed control, motivation of employees, and reorganization. It is argued that total quality management should include redesign of the work processes, combining decentralization, group work, goal-oriented control, and skill development. This reorganization strategy not only offers a greater potential for improvement of work, but it also seems essential for improving quality and productivity in the long run. • The influence of production planners and schedulers at manufacturing and commercial interfaces
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing. - : Wiley. - 1090-8471 .- 1520-6564. ; 18:5, s. 548-564
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes empirical research undertaken to identify how production planners and schedulers in manufacturing businesses exert influence on employees in production and commercial departments. Through the analysis of observations and interviews conducted in four case studies, sources of power were identified and categorized. It was found that although production planners and schedulers often did not have formal authority, in practice they had considerable influence. In the main, their sources of influence resided in their access to information. company agendas, and influential arenas, as well as their knowledge and social skills. The discussion draws from the findings examining influencing behaviors and considering their implications. The findings inform associated research on the processes, behaviors. and roles that schedulers and planners perform at functional interfaces, in support of effective and responsive order fulfillment. • Development of a stakeholder identification and analysis method for human factors integration in work system design interventions – Change Agent Infrastructure
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Human Factors and Ergonomics In Manufacturing. - : Wiley. - 1520-6564 .- 1090-8471. ; 32:1, s. 151-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In any work system design intervention—for example, a physical workplace redesign, a work process change, or an equipment upgrade—it is often emphasized how important it is to involve stakeholders in the process of analysis and design, to gain their perspectives as input to the development, and ensure their future acceptance of the solution. While the users of an artifact or workplace are most often regarded as being the most important stakeholders in a design intervention, in a work‐system context there may be additional influential stakeholders who influence and negotiate the design intervention's outcomes, resource allocation, requirements, and implementation. Literature shows that it is uncommon for empirical ergonomics and human factors (EHF) research to apply and report the use of any structured stakeholder identification method at all, leading to ad‐hoc selections of whom to consider important. Conversely, other research fields offer a plethora of stakeholder identification and analysis methods, few of which seem to have been adopted in the EHF context. This article presents the development of a structured method for identification, classification, and qualitative analysis of stakeholders in EHF‐related work system design intervention. It describes the method's EHF-related theoretical underpinnings, lessons learned from four use cases, and the incremental development of the method that has resulted in the current method procedure and visualization aids. The method, called Change Agent Infrastructure (abbreviated CHAI), has a mainly macroergonomic purpose, set on increasing the understanding of sociotechnical interactions that create the conditions for work system design intervention, and facilitating participative efforts.

  • CCPE: Methodology for a Combined Evaluation of Cognitive and Physical Ergonomics in the Interaction between Human and Machine
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Human Factors and Ergonomics In Manufacturing. - : Wiley. - 1520-6564 .- 1090-8471. ; 24:6, s. 685-711
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Evaluation methods of today often focus on cognitive ergonomics (such as mental workload or usability) or physical ergonomics (such as physical workload or body posture). This article describes an analytical methodology of a joint systematic search for potential deficiencies in the human-machine interaction; such as high physical and mental workload, use errors, usability problems, and physical ergonomic errors. The purpose with the joint search is to achieve a more holistic evaluation approach and make the evaluation cost more effective than when using separate evaluation methods for cognitive and physical ergonomic aspects. The methodology is task-based, which makes it possible to use both with focus on the device design, as in development projects; as well as with focus on the procedure, in the operative organization.

  • The Impact of Poor Assembly Ergonomics on Product Quality : A Cost-Benefit Analysis in Car Manufacturing
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing. - : Wiley Periodicals, Inc.. - 1090-8471 .- 1520-6564. ; 20:1, s. 24-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study aimed at analyzing the relationship between assembly ergonomics, assemblability (“ease of assembly”), and product quality and at quantifying these relationships in economic terms. This was in order to better to support the development of more ergonomic product and assembly solutions, particularly at early stages of the car development process. The assembly of 24,443 cars was studied for 8 weeks in an assembly plant and for another 16 weeks as factory-complete vehicles. The results show increased risks for quality errors of 3.0 and 3.7 times and total action costs that were 8.7 times and 8.2 times higher for high and medium physical load assemblies compared to low physical load assemblies for 55 tasks assessed.

  • Sustained lean transformation of working conditions : A Swedish longitudinal case study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1090-8471 .- 1520-6564. ; 27:6, s. 268-279
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies of lean production’s effect on working conditions are mixed but point toward worsened conditions. The aim of this longitudinal study was to assess how lean contributes to transforming work characteristics in a medium-sized specialized industrial family business. A mixed methods approachwas used to combine an external assessment of work characteristics with selfreported employee questionnaires. Favorable psychosocial working conditions were indicated, with role conflicts decreasing over time. The assessment of work provided descriptions of how lean practices contributed to decreased task control due to standardized work and simplified work processes. At the same time, employees still had opportunities to influence their long-term work assignment. There was also a trend toward job enlargement through new, higher-skilled tasks, multiskilling, and extended opportunities to influence work through different continuous improvement activities. The participative lean approach and type of skilled jobs may have contributed to this transformation.

  • ErgoVSM: A Tool for Integrating Value Stream Mapping and Ergonomics in Manufacturing
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing & Service Industries. - : Wiley. - 1090-8471 .- 1520-6564. ; 26:2, s. 191-204
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Value stream mapping (VSM) is a Lean tool aiming at waste reduction. Previous research suggests that the use of VSM may result in work intensification and thus an increased risk for the workers of developing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). In the current study, VSM was developed to also consider physical exposure in the analyzed production system (ErgoVSM). As the VSM, ErgoVSM is based on a participatory approach. ErgoVSM was tested in a Swedish manufacturing company. The results suggest that ErgoVSM catalyzes change processes to include intervention proposals emphasizing ergonomics in addition to waste reduction. Thus, ErgoVSM appeared useful for the investigated target group of production engineers and experienced operators. The performance improvements suggested when using the ordinary VSM seemed not to be hampered by adding the ergonomics complement. However, the use of ErgoVSM was somewhat more time-consuming than the use of VSM. In conclusion, ErgoVSM is suggested as a feasible tool to be used by production engineers and experienced operators for including ergonomics considerations in the rationalization process.

  • Change processes and ergonomic improvements in small and medium enterprises
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing. - : Wiley. - 1090-8471 .- 1520-6564. ; 14:2, s. 135-155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article deals with the question of how change processes can create ergonomic improvements in small- and medium-sized industrial enterprises. Drawing on experiences from two described and analyzed case studies in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and from ISO 9000 implementation processes previously studied, a hypothetical change framework is suggested through a theory generating approach. It separates change into action-driven change, which is an active experiential improvement process, and into vision-driven change, which is of a visionary design character. The ability to bring about problem solving into action was important for the success of the change processes. Furthermore, the nature of different hampering mechanisms concerning ergonomic improvements is discussed.
