  • Residual Stresses in Resistance Spot Welded AZ61 Mg Alloy
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: CMES - Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences. - : TECH SCIENCE PRESS. - 1526-1492 .- 1526-1506. ; 118:2, s. 275-290
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of magnesium alloys has been rapidly increased due to their ability to maintain high strengths at light weights. However weldability of steels and aluminum alloys by using resistance spot weld (RSW) process is a major issue, because it cannot be directly utilized for magnesium alloys. In this study, a structural-thermal-electrical finite element (FE) model has been developed to predict the distribution of residual stresses in RSW AZ61 magnesium alloy. Thermophysical and thermomechanical properties of AZ61 magnesium alloy have been experimentally determined, and have been used in FE model to increase the accuracy of the model. X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique has been utilized to measure the residual stresses in welded samples, and its results have been used to validate the FE model. Comparison study shows that the results obtained by using FE model have a good agreement with the experimental XRD data. In specific, the results show that the maximum tensile residual stress occurs at the weld center while decreases towards the nugget edge. In addition, the effects of welding parameters such as electrical current, welding time, and electrode force have been investigated on the maximum tensile residual stress. The results show that the tensile residual stress in welded joints rises by increasing the electrical current; however, it declines by prolonging the welding time as well as increasing the electrode force.

  • On the Numerical Solution of the Laplace Equation with Complete and Incomplete Cauchy Data Using Integral Equations
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: CMES - Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences. - : TECH SCIENCE PRESS. - 1526-1492 .- 1526-1506. ; 101:5, s. 299-317
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider the numerical solution of the Laplace equations in planar bounded domains with corners for two types of boundary conditions. The first one is the mixed boundary value problem (Dirichlet-Neumann), which is reduced, via a single-layer potential ansatz, to a system of well-posed boundary integral equations. The second one is the Cauchy problem having Dirichlet and Neumann data given on a part of the boundary of the solution domain. This problem is similarly transformed into a system of ill-posed boundary integral equations. For both systems, to numerically solve them, a mesh grading transformation is employed together with trigonometric quadrature methods. In the case of the Cauchy problem the Tikhonov regularization is used for the discretized system. Numerical examples are included both for the well-posed and ill-posed cases showing that accurate numerical solutions can be obtained with small computational effort.

  • Change Point Detection for Process Data Analytics Applied to a Multiphase Flow Facility
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: CMES - Computer Modeling in Engineering and Sciences. - : Computers, Materials and Continua (Tech Science Press). - 1526-1492 .- 1526-1506. ; 134:3, s. 1737-1759
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Change point detection becomes increasingly important because it can support data analysis by providing labels to the data in an unsupervised manner. In the context of process data analytics, change points in the time series of process variables may have an important indication about the process operation. For example, in a batch process, the change points can correspond to the operations and phases defined by the batch recipe. Hence identifying change points can assist labelling the time series data. Various unsupervised algorithms have been developed for change point detection, including the optimisation approach which minimises a cost function with certain penalties to search for the change points. The Bayesian approach is another, which uses Bayesian statistics to calculate the posterior probability of a specific sample being a change point. The paper investigates how the two approaches for change point detection can be applied to process data analytics. In addition, a new type of cost function using Tikhonov regularisation is proposed for the optimisation approach to reduce irrelevant change points caused by randomness in the data. The novelty lies in using regularisation-based cost functions to handle ill-posed problems of noisy data. The results demonstrate that change point detection is useful for process data analytics because change points can produce data segments corresponding to different operating modes or varying conditions, which will be useful for other machine learning tasks. © 2023 Tech Science Press. • A Double Adaptive Random Spare Reinforced Sine Cosine Algorithm
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: CMES - Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences. - : TECH SCIENCE PRESS. - 1526-1492 .- 1526-1506. ; 136:3, s. 2267-2289
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many complex optimization problems in the real world can easily fall into local optimality and fail to find the optimal solution, so more new techniques and methods are needed to solve such challenges. Metaheuristic algorithms have received a lot of attention in recent years because of their efficient performance and simple structure. Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA) is a recent Metaheuristic algorithm that is based on two trigonometric functions Sine & Cosine. However, like all other metaheuristic algorithms, SCA has a slow convergence and may fail in sub-optimal regions. In this study, an enhanced version of SCA named RDSCA is suggested that depends on two techniques: random spare/replacement and double adaptive weight. The first technique is employed in SCA to speed the convergence whereas the second method is used to enhance exploratory searching capabilities. To evaluate RDSCA, 30 functions from CEC 2017 and 4 real-world engineering problems are used. Moreover, a non parametric test called Wilcoxon signed-rank is carried out at 5% level to evaluate the significance of the obtained results between RDSCA and the other 5 variants of SCA. The results show that RDSCA has competitive results with other metaheuristics algorithms.

  • Gradient theory of damage coupled to frictional contact and wear, and its numerical treatment
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: CMES - Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences. - : Tech Science Press. - 1526-1492 .- 1526-1506. ; 52:2, s. 125-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper finite element approaches for fretting fatigue are proposed on the basis of a non-local model of continuum damage coupled to friction and wear. The model is formulated in the frame-work of a standard material. In a previous paper this was done in the spirit of Maugin, where an extra entropy flux is introduced in the second law in order to include the gradient of the internal variable in a proper manner. In this paper we follow instead the ideas of Frémond and others, where this extra entropy flux is no longer needed, but instead new non-classical balance laws associated to damage, friction and wear, respectively, are derived from the principle of virtual power. The standard material is then defined as usual by state laws based on free energies and complementary laws based on dissipation potentials. In particular, we pick free energies and dissipation potentials that correspond to a non-local continuum damage model coupled to friction and wear. In addition, the boundary conditions at the contact interface creates a coupling between damage and wear. This is a key feature of our model, which makes it very useful in studies of fretting fatigue. By starting from a variational formulation of the governing equations, two different finite element algorithms are implemented. Both algorithms are based on a Newton method for semi-smooth equations. In the first algorithm the Newton method is applied to the entire system of equations, while in the second algorithm the system of equations is split into two different parts such that an elastic wear problem is solved for fixed damage followed by the solution of the damage evolution problem for the updated displacements and contact forces in an iterative process. The latter algorithm can be viewed as a Gauss-Seidel scheme. The numerical performance of the algorithms is investigated for three twodimensional examples of increasing complexity. Based on the numerical solutions, the behavior of the model is also discussed. For instance, it is shown numerically how the initiation of damage depends on the contact geometry, the coefficient of friction and the evolution of wear.

  • Review of Recent Trends in the Hybridisation of Preprocessing-Based and Parameter Optimisation-Based Hybrid Models to Forecast Univariate Streamflow
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: CMES - Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences. - : Tech Science Press. - 1526-1492 .- 1526-1506. ; 138:1, s. 1-41
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Forecasting river flow is crucial for optimal planning, management, and sustainability using freshwater resources. Many machine learning (ML) approaches have been enhanced to improve streamflow prediction. Hybrid techniques have been viewed as a viable method for enhancing the accuracy of univariate streamflow estimation when compared to standalone approaches. Current researchers have also emphasised using hybrid models to improve forecast accuracy. Accordingly, this paper conducts an updated literature review of applications of hybrid models in estimating streamflow over the last five years, summarising data preprocessing, univariate machine learning modelling strategy, advantages and disadvantages of standalone ML techniques, hybrid models, and performance metrics. This study focuses on two types of hybrid models: parameter optimisation-based hybrid models (OBH) and hybridisation of parameter optimisation-based and preprocessing-based hybrid models (HOPH). Overall, this research supports the idea that meta-heuristic approaches precisely improve ML techniques. It's also one of the first efforts to comprehensively examine the efficiency of various meta-heuristic approaches (classified into four primary classes) hybridised with ML techniques. This study revealed that previous research applied swarm, evolutionary, physics, and hybrid metaheuristics with 77%, 61%, 12%, and 12%, respectively. Finally, there is still room for improving OBH and HOPH models by examining different data pre-processing techniques and metaheuristic algorithms.

  • Modelling Dry Port Systems in the Framework of Inland Waterway Container Terminals
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: CMES - Computer Modeling in Engineering and Sciences. - 1526-1506 .- 1526-1492. ; 137:1, s. 1019-1046
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Overcoming the global sustainability challenges of logistics requires applying solutions that minimize the negative effects of logistics activities. The most efficient way of doing so is through intermodal transportation (IT). Current IT systems rely mostly on road, rail, and sea transport, not inland waterway transport. Developing dry port (DP) terminals has been proven as a sustainable means of promoting and utilizing IT in the hinterland of seaport container terminals. Conventional DP systems consolidate container flows from/to seaports and integrate road and rail transportation modes in the hinterland which improves the sustainability of the whole logistics system. In this article, to extend literature on the sustainable development of different categories of IT terminals, especially DPs, and their varying roles, we examine the possibility of developing DP terminals within the framework of inland waterway container terminals (IWCTs). Establishing combined road–rail–inland waterway transport for observed container flows is expected to make the IT systems sustainable. As such, this article is the first to address the modelling of such DP systems. After mathematically formulating the problem of modelling DP systems, which entailed determining the number and location of DP terminals for IWCTs, their capacity, and their allocation of container flows, we solved the problem with a hybrid metaheuristic model based on the Bee Colony Optimisation (BCO) algorithm and the measurement of alternatives and ranking according to compromise solution (i.e., MARCOS) multi-criteria decision-making method. The results from our case study of the Danube region suggest that planning and developing DP terminals in the framework of IWCTs can indeed be sustainable, as well as contribute to the development of logistics networks, the regionalisation of river ports, and the geographic expansion of their hinterlands. Thus, the main contributions of this article are in proposing a novel DP concept variant, mathematically formulating the problems of its modelling, and developing an encompassing hybrid metaheuristic approach for treating the complex nature of the problem adequately.
