  • You Live as Much as You Have Time To : The Experience of Patients Living with Hemodialysis
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nephrology Nursing Journal. - : JANNETTI PUBLICATIONS, INC. - 1526-744X .- 2163-5390. ; 44:1, s. 35-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Changes in their daily lives that patients endure because of hemodialysis are major and also essential so they can stay alive. The aim of this study was to describe changes in life for patients with renal failure undergoing hemodialysis. The study has a qualitative descriptive approach with a qualitative content analysis based on in-depth interviews with patients undergoing hemodialysis. Results show that life in hemodialysis is experienced as a transition from liberty to captivity, adjusting to the new life, and the new life moving towards reconciliation. This study shows that support towards reconciliation is crucial for patient health.

  • Empowerment Intervention in Outpatient Care of Persons with Chronic Kidney Disease Pre-Dialysis
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nephrology Nursing Journal. - 1526-744X .- 2163-5390. ; 39:4, s. 285-293
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Empowering interventions can improve person-centered care. A pre- and post-evaluation using interactive research involving two years of empowering interventions was designed to improve quality of care in outpatients with chronic kidney disease who were pre-dialysis. The results showed significantly increased empowerment in the intervention group. Interactive research facilitated the implementation of the empowerment intervention, which may increase sustainability over time.

  • Circling around in tiredness : perspectives of patients on peritoneal dialysis
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nephrology Nursing Journal. - : Journal of the American Nephrology Nurses' Association. - 1526-744X .- 2163-5390. ; 37:4, s. 407-413
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The experience of tiredness linked to poor sleep in patients on peritoneal dialysis was explored using the qualitative method phenomenology. Eight women and six men in southeast Sweden were interviewed. The patients' descriptions were characterized by a circular structure "circling around in tiredness." This study illustrates the problems of tiredness and illuminates the need for healthcare professionals to assess the impact of tiredness and highlight the need for strategies to improve the patient's situation.

  • Sleep Quality, Fatigue, and Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients on Initial Peritoneal Dialysis and Multiple Modalities after Two Years : A Prospective Study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nephrology Nursing Journal. - Pitman, NJ, United States : American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA). - 1526-744X .- 2163-5390. ; 46:6, s. 615-649
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in sleep quality, fatigue, mental health, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) over a two-year period among patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis treatment at home. We further explored the extent to which sleep quality, fatigue, and mental health predicted health-related quality of life outcomes. This prospective study included 55 patients. Sleep parameters changed over two years, independently of treatment. Sleep variables at baseline, to some extent, predicted sleep quality after two years. Daytime sleepiness can be a long-term problem. Findings indicate improvements in nocturnal sleep over a two-year time period, independently of dialysis treatment. In contrast, fatigue remained unchanged over the same time period. Transplantation seems to generally benefit the outcome of HRQoL. Strategies to improve sleep and HRQoL may include systematic risk factor modification and efforts to optimise symptomatic treatment.

  • The impact of a nurse-led clinic on self-care ability, disease-specific knowledge, and home dialysis modality.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nephrology nursing journal : journal of the American Nephrology Nurses' Association. - 1526-744X. ; 35:3, s. 242-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A nurse-led clinic focusing on education and self-care for patients with advanced renal failure was introduced in a renal outpatient clinic in Sweden. The purpose was to enhance patients' disease-related knowledge, involvement, and self-care ability. This article reports the results of a study comparing patient outcomes with the nurse-led clinic to the previous model of care. The hypothesis was that the nurse-led clinic would increase medical control and self-care outcomes. The participants in the nurse-led clinic chose and started dialysis in a self-care alternative and also had a functioning, permanent dialysis access to a greater extent than the patients in the comparison group. Those choosing home-hemodialysis rated their self-care ability higher. The participants rated self-care and effects of treatment options on family and everyday life as the most important disease-related areas of knowledge.
