  • The assumptions and profiles behind IT security behavior
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 50th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, HICSS 2017. - 1530-1605. - 9780998133102 ; 2017-January, s. 4987-4996
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Among the major IT security challenges facing organizations is non-malicious employee behavior that nevertheless poses significant threats to an organization's IT security. Using a grounded theory methodology, this paper finds that organizational security behaviors are inherently related to employee assumptions regarding the importance of IT security policy compliance and regarding the reason why IT security measures are implemented. Analyzing these assumptions uncovers four profiles of perspectives concerning IT security: the IT Security Indulgence, the IT Security Overindulgence, the IT Knows Best and the IT Security Disconnect profiles. These profiles are useful in understanding employee IT security behaviors and may help IT departments in developing more effective strategies designed to ensure policy compliance.

  • The role of fitbits in corporate wellness programs : Does step count matter?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 50th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, HICSS 2017. - 1530-1605. - 9780998133102 ; 2017-January, s. 3627-3635
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Striving to promote the health and well-being of their workforce and decrease insurance expenditures, many organizations are incorporating wearable fitness trackers into their corporate wellness programs. Research suggests that these devices encourage individuals to make healthier choices; however, little is known about the drivers and impact of fitness trackers on employee health and wellbeing. We seek to fill this knowledge gap by investigating the following research questions: (1) what is the impact of wearable fitness device use on employee health and well-being? (2) what is the impact of wearable fitness device use on step count? Our results indicate that extended use has a positive impact on employee well-being and step count, which fully mediates the relationship between feature use and health. These findings have implications for research into wearable fitness trackers and, more specifically, for research on the uses of wearable fitness devices in corporate wellness programs.

  • Building Digital Infrastructures: Towards an Evolutionary Theory of Contextual Triggers
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 50th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences 2017. - 1530-1605. - 9780998133102
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Past IS research suggests it is challenging to build digital infrastructures and then make sure they grow. While more users, innovative services, and new partners spur infrastructure evolution, we know little of the specific contextual triggers that set these generative mechanisms in motion. To this end, we conduct a case study of a digitalized public transport infrastructure to identify such triggers and explore their impact on its evolution. Our study contributes to the extant literature on digital infrastructure evolution in two distinct ways. First, we analyze, define, and propose three contextual triggers that improve our understanding of the generative mechanisms behind infrastructure development and growth. Second, we rely on this conceptual basis to sketch out the initial contours of a novel evolutionary theory of digital infrastructure triggers.

  • IT Infrastructure Architectures for Electric Utilities : A Comparative Analysis of Description Techniques
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - 1530-1605. ; 4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The escalating development of Information Technology enables utilities to reorganize or migrate from their existing disparate software systems towards an integrated Enterprise Software System Infrastructure (ESSI) that embraces the total organization. Integration of software systems is expected to increase competitiveness and to cut costs. However, since utilities' present ESSI is heterogeneous as to type and technical platform, overlapping with regard to both data and functionality, and relying on ad-hoc low-level middleware, integration and management of ESSIs often turn out to be hazardous. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the architectural modeling capabilities of established notations widely used by object-oriented, information engineering and structured methods, applied to typical problems found in utilities' ESSI. Architectural descriptions may be used to visualize technical risks and opportunities in a utility's current and future ESSI, as well as to improve communication between different groups within the utility, e.g. management and technical staff, and between the utility and its vendors of software systems.

  • Patterns of resource integration in the self-service approach to business analytics
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 53rd Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, HICSS 2020. - 1530-1605. - 9780998133133 ; 2020-January, s. 5359-5368
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The main premise of Self-Service Business Analytics (SSBA) is to make business employees autonomous during the data analytical process. To empower business employees, organizations are decentralizing their analytical capabilities through an SSBA approach. Yet, little is known about how employees integrate resources, such as, among others, personal competencies, environment resources including technology, and to generate insights in SSBA. Based on the empirical data of a major Norwegian online marketplace and drawing on service-dominant logic as an analytical framework, we identify and explain two types of resource integration in an SSBA environment: direct and clustered resource integration (including 1st tier and 2nd tier) enabled and controlled by three types of institutions. We finally discuss some organizational implications and the meaning of each sub-type of clustered resource integration.

  • Multi-casting in Mountainous Regions of Developing Countries: Analysis through ICT, Institutions, and Capabilities Perspectives
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - 1530-1605. ; , s. 3327-3336
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Overcoming shortages of teachers or teachers with required skills and experience is a major challenge in rural schools in the global south. We investigate a classroom video conference multi-casting project under development by the Nepal Wireless Networking Project. Our case study draws on one-to-one interviews and focus group discussions from three areas and 10 village research sites in Nepal. An analytical framework which combines the capability approach, institutions theory and ICTs is used. We found that multi-casting projects in the health domain (eHealth projects) focus on capacity building for rural health workers. Despite concerns about the quality of health outreach workers, they were central to eHealth project design. In contrast, teachers were not afforded such a central role in the classroom multi-casting project. Teachers were being sidelined or replaced, rather than being seen as an essential asset to the project. The main contribution of this paper is to enhance understanding of how multi-casting projects can enable or inhibit educational capabilities with regard to health and education in mountainous regions of developing countries.

  • No Ground Truth at Sea - Developing High-Accuracy AI Decision-Support for Complex Environments
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - 1530-1605. ; 2023-January, s. 4566-4575
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As AI decision-support systems are increasingly developed for applications outside of traditional organizational confinements, developers are confronted with new sources of complexity they need to address. However, we know little about how AI applications are developed for natural use domains with high environmental complexity, stemming from physical influences outside of the developers' control. This study investigates what challenges emerge from such complexity and how developers mitigate them. Drawing upon a rich longitudinal single-case study on the development of AI decision-support for maritime navigation, findings show that achieving high output accuracy is complicated by the physical environment hindering training data creation. Further, developers chose to reduce the output accuracy and adapt the HMI design to successfully situate the AI application in an existing sociotechnical context. This study contributes to IS literature following recent calls for phenomenon-based examination of emerging challenges when extending the scope frontier of AI and provides practical recommendations for developing AI decision-support for complex environments.
